Anne Rice really likes to take jabs at Twilight, sparkly vampires and Stephenie Meyer. She’s done it before. A couple of times. Well, she’s gone and done it again. This time on her Facebook page. From THR:

“Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun,” said Rice, referring to her popular characters (who were portrayed by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in the 1994 movie). “They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town —- anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful.”

Editor’s Note: I have never understood why people aren’t allowed to have artistic freedom with something that doesn’t exist. Anne Rice is not the first person that wrote vampires. And she won’t be the last. So let’s stop blasting everyone like the fictional characters have to fit into a box. OK, rant done.

But after the recent attack of a woman by a man who tried to suck her blood, Reuter’s is asking the question ” what is the impact of vampire books and movies on youth culture” :

The arrest of an American man who broke into a woman’s house and tried to suck her blood over the weekend has sparked discussion about the impact of vampire books and movies on youth culture.

Whether pop culture played a role in the attack remains to be seen, as 19-year-old Lyle Monroe Bensley awaits a psychiatric evaluation in jail on burglary charges in Galveston, Texas.

Found growling and hissing in a parking lot and wearing only boxer shorts, the pierced and tattooed Bensley claimed he was a 500-year-old vampire who needed to “feed,” Galveston Police Capt. Jeff Heyse said.

Vampires have been a focal point of literature since Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, “Dracula”. But fascination, particularly among young people, has peaked in recent years with the popularity of the “Twilight” books about teenage vampires and the television series, “True Blood.”

“I think the vampire is a metaphor for the outsider and the predator in all of us,” said author Anne Rice, whose Vampire Chronicles series has captured the imaginations of horror fans since the 1970s.

“We’re all conscious at times of being alone, of being alienated, of being a secret self that fears exposure to the judgments of others. So we feel like vampires,” she told Reuters.

Dr. Thomas Garza, who teaches a course in vampire lore at the University of Texas, said young people might aspire to be like vampires because they cheat death and are able to stay beautiful, powerful, and youthful for eternity.

The modern vampire in popular culture is more attractive, suave, and fashionably dressed than the Old World Slavic vampires, adding to the resurgence of their appeal, he added.

“I would say that it is the Twilight saga in particular that has brought out the younger teen fans. In that connection, Edward is a very ‘safe’ vampire, a kind of ‘starter vamp’ for beginners, if you will,” Garza said.

“He’s pretty, yes, so the seduction’s there, but he’s more than reluctant to act on his and Bella’s sexual desires. He can go out in daylight – and even ‘sparkles’ in the sun, giving him a completely non-threatening character. He drives a Volvo, for goodness sake.”

True Blood actor Stephen Moyer compares his series with Twilight, calling the film franchise fluffy. Here is what he had to say. Stephen is co-starring with Rachelle Lefevre (Victoria) in the upcoming film The Caller.

“GM: What do you make of the current vampire craze? It really shows no sign of abating.

SM: It doesn’t seem to be abating. It’s one of those unanswerable questions because when you think it’s one thing, it turns out to be another. … I think in the teen world, there’s a beautiful romance about that stuff. I believe this year the Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart characters [in the "Twilight" saga] have a baby. It’s this perfect romance, this perfect ideal. Ours isn’t quite as fluffy as that … our characters and the way that Alan works is, as soon as a character has a semblance of happiness, he digs a hole for them to drive into.”

Matt Reeve, director of Let Me In, has reportedly signed on to direct the Frankenstein retelling This Dark Endeavor, which will be release by Summit Entertainment. Reeve is also set to direct the adaptation of vampire novel The Passage.  From The Playlist:

The project has franchise potential which is likely why Summit is pushing it forward, as the book is the first in a series. But like the Snow White movies, there is plenty of competition out there, and Deadline ran down yesterday. But this actually looks to be original take, not simply a refashioning for contemporary audiences, but the question is when this will get made. Reeves already has two other films in the oven and we suppose Summit will be looking at book sales first before moving ahead in earnest. But clearly, they want strong talent behind the picture.

There’s a new kind of cosmetic procedure available, and it doesn’t require injecting any acids, fat or toxins into the body. The main ingredient in this wrinkle- removing procedure is a patient’s own blood.

The technology is called Selphyl, and it involves injecting a mixture of blood products into the affected areas. It’s also called the “vampire face-lift,” although calling it a face-lift is not accurate. Selphyl is a nonsurgical procedure akin to filler injections, while a face-lift is the surgical repositioning of facial tissues that have become loose over time.

Dr. Andre Berger of the Rejuvalife Vitality Institute in Beverly Hills, Calif., said the procedure is becoming very popular.

“I think this whole recent theme in the entertainment industry … of using vampire, Dracula themes, has definitely caused a lot of the interest out there,” Berger said.

A teen who told authorities that she was attacked while jogging was later found to be lying. It turns out, marks on her body were bite marks from vampire role-playing.

Police said the girl is a fan of the vampire-based Twilight movies and books and had engaged in “fantasy biting behaviour” with a 19-year-old male neighbour.

But she made up the assault because she was worried her mother would see the marks.

*The truth is that I am “second generation” of Twilight fan. My aunt was the one who suggested to me the Twilight saga. We have a little age difference and we pretty much grew up as sisters, so she gave me her books and I got lost in the world of Stephenie Meyer’s. One day, T was seeking for more information about Twilight and I came across some information about the unfinished fifth Stephenie Meyer’s book – “Midnight Sun”. On various forums I found and read parts from it in english and wanted so badly to share them with my aunt, as she shared with me the previous four, however, she does not speak English and therefore I had to look for a decent translation in French or Bulgarian for her. So, I was wandering from site to site in search of that translation and I came across the FangYourself.com advertising. I still can’t forget the charismatic lady on the photo from the add, her eyes are charming newborn vampires to join their teeth friends there, even today. I read what it was all about and I made the quick registration. About an hour later I got my first bite and only two days after, I was nominated by you to participate in your contest.

*About ten years ago my whole world sank into the gentle darkness of the gothic community. I can call myself lucky because in this world I manage to found a place for myself and also for my work without having the obligation to be someone else or something else. I have the freedom to live in my own fantasies every day and becaming a part of Twilight / Vampire fan universe brought me many new personal contacts and bring me a new creative inspiration. I’ve even resumed the work on my own book, which until recently gathered dust in a cupboard for nearly 12 years ;D

I keep seeing tips and costumes to dress like a vampire for Halloween, or more specifically, a Twilight vampire or character (see Twilight Poison’s costume and makeup guide). And I’ve heard from several of our readers who are putting the finishing touches on their Twi costumes. So tell us, Do you plan to dress up as one of the Twilight Saga characters for Halloween this year?

With these Halloween makeup tips, Harpers Bazaar steers away from the bloody, gory vampire look, and instead gives us tips on how to apply makeup for our subtle, sexy, more grownup vampire costumes this year. One of their examples is the exquisite Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen.

STEP 1: Prep. “One of the most important elements of having ‘vampire-ish’ iridescent skin, is clear skin,” says Paula Dorf, makeup artist and owner/creator of Paula Dorf Cosmetics. She recommends using Leirac Soins Éclat Express Masque Clarté twice a week to banish breakouts.

STEP 2: Face. “Keep skin pale and translucent — not white,” says Dorf. “It should appear to glow, versus being painted.” She suggests starting with a vanilla-colored powder, followed by glimmer powder on cheeks and temples. “Remember to apply the powder to your neck and décolletage, too,” she says.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Hollywood has made $7 billion on vampire entertainment in the last two years, including film and TV shows.

Just this week, the Fox/New Regency “Twilight” parody “Vampires Suck” grossed $20 million, and 5 million regular viewers are rabidly following HBO’s newest hit, “True Blood,” as it swoops toward its season 3 finale Sept. 12. Meanwhile, Justin Cronin’s “The Passage,” Stephenie Meyer’s “Breaking Dawn” and Charlaine Harris’ “Dead and Gone” hover on best-seller lists.

These charming, deadly immortals are everywhere. And as a result, they’re spilling as much green as red — about $7 billion since the “Twilight” film franchise bowed less than two years ago, according to THR estimates.

When Nikki stopped by to chat about her upcoming Indie “Last Day of Summer,” we asked her if she and Woll connected over their blood bonds. (Pun totally intended)

“We’re both equally fascinated by I think the passion behind the admiration for vampires,” Nikki explained. “I really love ‘True Blood’ and I envy her. I would do anything to have a guest spot on the show, hint hint,” she said with a wink.

“That’s what we talked about most,” Nikki added. “She was talking about ‘Twilight,’ and I was commenting on her show, and what we like about each other’s work, and I think that she wins.”

We then suggested that we should get Nikki on the “True Blood” set to do some reconnaissance, but she revealed that she and Deborah have already planned it out:

“I’m going to visit her on the set one day, coincidentally, and be like ‘Hey Alan! Alan Ball, how are ya? … You know it could be funny because I’m in ‘Twilight,’ that could be funny?’ I don’t think they’ll go for it,” Nikki said. “[But] I’m willing to push myself.”

I have gotten some rather heated emails and comments about my posts for the parody film Vampires Suck, which mainly takes aim at Twilight, but also at other films/shows in the vampire genre. many of you are very offended by the idea of it, and others of you have told me that you think it looks really funny.  So this week’s poll will help me to figure out where the majority of you stand. Vote away!

The stars of the hit TV series Vampire Diaries admit that the success of Twilight helped their show to achieve success.  Stars Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley had this to say to Digital Spy.

“I didn’t see Twilight prior to shooting Vampire Diaries, but it would be ignorant and stupid to say that our show didn’t generate a buzz because of the success of Twilight, but I think we have distinguished ourselves at this stage,” Wesley told RTE.

Dobrev added: “But you know, the fact that Twilight was so successful, it made the world aware that people wanted to see more about vampires.

“So thankfully for us, Twilight has given us the opportunity to make a TV show and I think we have a few more years at least.”

Wesley added that there were similarities between the two stories and admitted: “Some people say I actually look like Robert Pattinson.

“Well look, it’s incredibly similar, we both have a high school setting, a mysterious guy that turns up and falls in love with a mortal girl. He’s got all these conflicts because of the nature of his situation and the fact that she is a vampire. So I understand that the premises of both stories are almost identical.”

He was unable to say who would win in a fight between Stefan and Pattinson’s Edward Cullen because he “didn’t know enough” about the Twilight vampire.

“That’s really up to the viewer or reader to decide,” he said.

Cam Gigandet played James in Twilight, and now he is coming out in a new vampire flick called Priest. Cam insists that the two are quite different.

Gigandet said that, although there are vampires involved in the movie, fans expecting the romantic “Twilight”-style vamps will be in for a shock.

“It’s very, very different from ‘Twilight,’ ” he said. “The similarities kind of end with what they’re called, which is vampires.”

Gigandet said the world of “Priest,” directed by Scott Charles Stewart, is also entirely different. “The world Scott created is kind of unlike any other,” he said. “Sometimes it was hard to visualize what he had in his mind, but I’ve seen clips, and its unbelievable. … Just to work with all of these people, they’re such an amazing cast. I didn’t have any doubts [about taking on another vampire-related role].”

Gigandet’s co-star, “Star Trek” star Karl Urban, said he’s never seen a movie like this. “This is a post-apocalyptic vampire western,” he said. “The emphasis isn’t heavily on the fact — it’s not like a ‘vampire film’; there’s so much more to it.”

As far as what “Twilight” fans can expect to see, and fans of the original comic book, Gigandet and his co-stars said there is something for everyone in the film, because it is emotional and character-driven.

“[There are] so many different levels, and so many people are doing things that sacrifice for all sorts of love,” Gigandet said. “It’s not just one set love story. There are so many different levels going on.”
