Robert Pattinson appeared on the French show Le Grand Journal today to promote Cosmopolis with co-star Sarah Gadon. The film has its world premiere tomorrow at the festival. Note: this interview is in French.

Robert Pattinson has a new interview with Premiere France where he talks about his involvement in Cosmopolis. I loved what he had to say about the Twilight fans and how much the fans want the actors in Twilight to succeed in their other roles.

P: Is there some part of you that is thrilled to surprise your Twilight fans who would see Cosmopolis?
RP: When my casting in Cosmopolis was announced, I saw many of them buying Don DeLillo’s book. And it doesn’t shock them at all that I’m playing a role like this one. On the contrary, I feel liek they want to see us succeed, for us to be successful after the saga. They want us to be loved and respected. They’re aren’t fans like any others, they might not all be movie fanatics, but I can feel in them a desire to become one. They’re interested in what we do, even if it’s an usual movie like Cosmopolis. Actors that are in popular hits or franchises, often feel like they have to do things that would please ‘this’ audience. But I think that they underestimate their spectators. I know that Twilight fans want to adapt themselves. If you’ve played in Transformers, it doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to that all your life.

FilmNation has picked up almost worldwide rights for the film The Rover, which will star Robert Pattinson and shoot later this year. The film was selling at Cannes and, according to Deadline, has all but sold out. More details about the plot have been revealed:

The Rover is set in the Australian desert in a dangerous and dysfunctional near future. Eric has left everything and every semblance of human kindness behind him. When his last possession, his car, is stolen by a gang of dangerous criminals, Eric sets off to track them down and is forced along the way to enlist the help of Reynolds, the naïve simpleton member of the gang left behind in the bloody chaos of the gang’s most recent escape.

At this point, we know Rob is playing one of the criminals, but, as far as I know, it is unknown if he is the “simpleton” mentioned above. The film will also star Guy Pearce.

The interview was done in a private club in Sunset Boulevard.

He hid his intense beauty under a baseball cap, a blonde scruff, a lumberkjack shirt, a white tee and washed out jeans. They had the interview on the terrace where he could light up his cigarettes.

Between light coughs and nervous laughs, he explains that he doesn’t feel at home here.

His dream is to work in a black comedy of Todd Solodnz or in dramas for men by James Gray or Jacques Audiard.

“I was scared of being cut off from the art-house cinema that I always felt passionate about. I was scared to never be asked to play in anything interesting, that my life would pass and that someone would ask me one day, ‘so apart from Twilight, what did you do?’. In this industry, you’re easily typecast”

“I never proved anything, I was never fooled by the hysteria that surrounds me. It’s the character that I play, Edward Cullen, the romantic vampire. Besides, before the movie was even made, girls would screams at Stephenie Meyer’s public readings.”

When he got the script for Cosmopolis: He got the fear of the beginner/novice. ”I was so scared I would screw this up that I spent a week trying to find a way to refuse the job. And then I told myself that I shouldn’t be so stuck-up. My agent was nervous: ‘why would you accept if you don’t understand it?’. I confessed my confusion to David and he liked it. I think that might be why he hired me. Most actors would have try to act cooler, try to say something smart but I was completely lost.”

Cronenberg said that the actor didn’t come on set with his hands in his pockets. That he’s an assiduous reader, who’s been interested in the character of the ‘golden boy’ for a long while, one who’s close to the one he portrays in Cosmopolis. ’Money’ by Martin Amis – which describes the giddy heights of easy money and the chic hedonism – is one of his bedtime readings. He finds so many similarities with himself in the empty space of the star system, that he wrote how own version of the novel, in hopes of playing it one day.

“I thought about it for Cosmopolis of course but the characters are too different and Cronenberg prefered that I knew nothing. He wanted me to give in, to say my lines in almost an abstract way, like poetry. It was exciting and a little scary. Today I’m nervous about the idea of having to talk to an audience about a movie that stays dark. But Cronenberg, himself, wanted to have something that escapes him. He would tell me about Fellini and say that a filmmaker that has a goal is dead already. It’s so much more interesting than to know right away where an artist is gonna take you. Plus, its’ the first time I really like one of the movies I make.”

Premiere: What made you go back to Cannes with Cosmopolis?

David Cronenberg: The festival and I have a long history. In a sense I have the feeling of coming home. I think it is an ideal film for Cannes and I’m excited about the idea of having ​​Rob with me.

Q: Today it is impossible to imagine someone for this part. However, you offered it before to Colin Farrell …

DC: When Colin left the project to film the remake of Total Recall, it made me rethink everything. Anyway he was too old for the part: he’s 35 and I wanted to be faithful to the book, it was necessary to have 25 year old actor. Then I started to check all the actors of that age and that’s how I thought of Rob. I had seen him in Twilight, of course, but nothing he had done so far really predisposed him to act in Cosmopolis. Even tho you choose an actor by the perceived potential you see in him and not by his resume. And the more I thought aout it, the more I liked the idea.

Q: Did he went through an audition?

DC: No. We talked a lot on the phone. Rob is not one of those people with a big ego. He really wanted to make the movie, but seriously wondered if he could. It was his only concern. He said “do you really think I’m good enough to play this part? I’m afraid to ruin your movie.” I told him that this conversation more than convinced me that he was perfect for Cosmopolis.

Q: It’s hard to imagine you watching Twilight. Have you seen all four movies?

DC: (laughs). No, not really. I must have seen one and a half.

Q: The saga has made him a star, but has also created an absurd situation: people who have not seen him act shout that he is an idol for young girls, and lacking any talent.

DC: This reflects the world we live in today, where the Internet, among other things, promotes this kind of hasty and dangerous judgement. I ignore them and try to see beyond. The advantage is that Rob’s fans are waiting for the moment when he will show everyone that he is able to exist beyond Twilight. And if they’re all going to see Cosmopolis, I don’t worry about the future of the film.

Q: How did the other actors react when you told them that Robert Pattinson would have the lead role?

DC: Paul Giamatti, who was one of the first actors to join the cast, thought it was a brilliant idea. I’m not sure if Juliette Binoche could have weighed the popularity of Rob when she signed for the film, but none of them expressed doubt or contempt about him. Nobody told me: “What the hell were you thinking when you hired the guy from Twilight?” Quite the contrary. In fact, I caught Rob and Juliette having very deep conversations about French cinema. They got along really well.

Q: Do you have in mind a particular scene in which he has impressed you.

DC: By the end of the shoot, he was so into his role that we would only do one or two takes per shot. And he surprised every time by the way he managed to secure all the emotions that were at stake. He was completely impregnated with the loneliness and pain of the character. Because we shot the film more or less in chronological order, the final scene we shot was the last. And I just needed to do one take because of how perfect Rob and Paul were. When I said “cut” all crew members looked stunned by what had just happened.

Q: Seeing Robert Pattinson in the movie, you immediately think of Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, who were teen idols before they could really show their potential when directed by Tim Burton and David Fincher …

DC: Some actors become stars thanks to their pretty faces and a charisma that comes off well on the screen. At first, they’re rarely offered the opportunity to show more than that. But it happens that they only have this to show… With Cosmopolis I was proud to give Rob a chance to prove the ability of his talent. If he does well, I see him having, with no difficulty, a career like Johnny Depp’s or Brad Pitt’s. Or maybe even better.

In other BBFC decisions, the upcoming drama Cosmopolis, directed by David Cronenberg and starring Robert Pattinson, also gets a 15 certificate for “strong sex and language.” It is due in cinemas on June 15, 2012, and has a running time of 1 hour 49 minutes. Pattinson recently spoke about the film and his attempts to move on from associations with the Twilight franchise.

While we’ve had plenty of recent photo shoots of our cast members, it’s been a bit of a drought when it comes to Robert Pattinson! Well, Frances’ Premiere Magazine is happy to oblige us with a brand new photo shoot and  interview with the star of the upcoming Cosmopolis in their May 2012 issue.

And here’s a bit of the interview:

P: I recommend David to see the last Twilight movie, that is almost ‘Cronenbergian’ at some times …
RP: *laughs* I can’t believe there’s still one more to come (Breaking Dawn Pt 2 is out November 14th) and I have some reshoots to do in a few days.

P: You thought Twilight was behind you?
RP: Yes, I’m not the same as I was at the beginning. First, I’m older … When I have to go on the makeup chair, I see all those wrinkles that came with time, it’s scary. I thickened/filled out too. Since I didn’t have any clothes when we shot the first movie, I stole some from the movie when we done and I can fit any them anymore!

P: When you first went to Cannes in 2009, you triggered off a riot on the beach where 700 fans were waiting for you. The security had to carry you out to your car to get you out of there …
P: This year they won’t even notice me: ‘We don’t care, he’s not in The Hunger Games!’ *laughs*

P: It is looks like you have a date with one of your Twilight costar on la croisette, since Kristen Stewart will be there for On The Road too. The Festival almost looks like graduation day …
RP: I’m thrilled to go. Filming Cosmopolis with Cronenberg changed something in me. It gave me balls. *laughs* I have 5 projects lining up right now that follow the path the movie opened for me. Before, I spent my time doubting myself. As soon as I read a script that I liked, I was working myself up, asking myself if I was good enough. Now, I tell myself: ‘F*** it! If they want to hire you, go!”

Robert Pattinson spoke with Premiere France about his newly announced project Mission: Blacklist, which follows the true story an interrogator as he leads the charge to find Saddam Hussein.

Robert Pattinson, who is bound to suprise a lot of people in three weeks when Cosmopolis will be presented at Cannes, doesn’t seem to want to stop there yet. The ‘adult’ turn the star is taking will go further with Mission: Blacklist, the new movie by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, director of the impressive Johnny Mad Dog in 2008. The movie is a thriller inspired by Eric Maddox’s book, the military interrogator who was the brain of the operation that lead to the capture of Saddam Hussein in December 2003. Erik Jendresen, screenwriter for Band of Brothers is in charge of the adaptation, with a shooting that should be starting in the Fall.

“We’re going to do some scout locations in Iraq soon.”

“As Jean-Stéphane is used to work with non professional actors, I thought I had no chance of getting the role,” Robert Pattinson told us recently. “But we met a few times and we clicked. He found a fascinating way to deal with this subject. It’s weird because it’s a movie about war but it’s essentially focusing on the interrogations. The language and the barriers he could create played an important role. But it’s essentially the story of a true soldier, Eric Maddox, with whom we’re leaving for Iraq soon for some scouting”

“Jean-Stéphane is truly surprising” says Pattinson. “He has talent when it comes to meeting people. Like, for example, out of nowhere, he got to spend some time with the Iraqi Minister of Culture. He also got to meet this guy who was a former chief of the Hussein clan and he was really close to him. I asked him: ‘How do you get to meet a man like that?’ He said he met him in a bar in Paris!”

After Johnny Mad Dog, immersed in the every day life of extremely violent kids – turned soldiers – in Liberia, Sauvaire seems to have found a new subject cut out for his explosive film making technics. “Johnny Mad Dog was an extremely strong piece, that possessed a truly documentary value, while still being cinematic,” says Pattinson with enthusiasm. “I cannot wait to work with him on Mission: Blacklist. It’s going to be a f***ing good movie.”

Robert Pattinson’s upcoming film Cosmopolis is garnering lots of attention, and it seems distributors want to get their hands on it before it even premieres at Cannes later this month. Entertainment One has secured U.S. and U.K. distribution rights for the film already. While it doesn’t have a release date yet, that does mean that American and British fans will get to see it in the theater.

Yesterday we announced the Robert Pattinson would star in the film Mission: Blacklist, and now there is more Rob casting news! Today it was announced that he has also joined The Rover, which will co-star Guy Pearce. From Deadline:

Robert Pattinson has joined David Michod’s The Rover. Pattinson, best known for his Edward role in the Twilight franchise, will play the character of Reynolds in the film. The film in the near future as one man relentless pursues his men who stole his car through the wild and rough Australian outback. Guy Pearce will also star in The Rover.

Deadline is reporting that Robert Pattinson will star in the film Mission: Blacklist which focuses on the hunt for Saddam Hussein.  No word on when filming will begin, but more details can be found below.

Robert Pattinson has come on board to star in the upcoming film “Mission: Blacklist” with Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire committed to direct. The screenplay was adapted by “Band of Brothers” writer and producer Erik Jendresen from the Harper Collins novel Mission: Black List #1 written by military interrogator Eric Maddox with Davin Seay. Ross M. Dinerstein, Managing Partner of Preferred Content, is producing alongside Jendresen and Kevin Waller.Embankment Films, the international sales and distribution company recently launched by international sales veterans Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar will begin selling the film at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.

”Mission: Blacklist” is a psychological thriller that details the true, inside story of the search for Saddam Hussein and the interrogator, Eric Maddox, who spearheaded his capture.

When the Rolling Stones guitarist was working on “Exile,” he was recording in a big basement and not seeing much direct sunlight, so a pale, vampiric actor such as Robert Pattinson might be a good, safe choice.

Certainly this casting would please the ladies (but depress the Stones fans).

The magnetic Australian actor is best known for his role in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and at a certain angle is a ringer for Jagger.

And since Xavier Samuel proved in “Eclipse” that he’s a good fighter, he’d be able to accurately capture the tension between Jagger and Richards.

As I mentioned above, KStew has two offerings for this summer, and they’re coming hot and heavy, one right after another. First will be the long-awaited adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel “On The Road,” dropping on May 23. I don’t simply mean it’s “long-awaited” because it’s been in development for two years and Twi-hards have been itching to see Stewart as a crazy teenage ’40s beatnik. Hollywood has been trying to adapt the book, in one form or another, since 1957. Why has it been so difficult? It’s not exactly a “clean” story arc, giving directors license to get way too artsy with it. Don’t get your hopes up too much. Let’s just focus on the joy of seeing KStew getting sweaty dancing to jazz, man.

If “On The Road” does disappoint, you have “Snow White and the Huntsman” around the corner on June 1, and that seems highly likely to be awesome. Stewart couldn’t have played her cards much better: a notable indie dropping right before a shoo-in summer blockbuster. She’ll dominate the movie press for at least those two weeks.

Anna Kendrick

Lionsgate
While I’m not going to crunch the numbers, it’s likely Kendrick will be the “Twilight” cast member who gets the most work in Hollywood. That’s why it’s no surprise Kendrick appears in May 18′s “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” since the studio tried to squeeze as many marketable names as it could in this ensemble cast. She plays Rosie, a character “who reunites with an old flame and fellow food-truck owner and becomes pregnant.” Other than that, I can’t tell you more than the film’s omnipresent marketing has already done.

Were you already familiar with the novel by Don DeLillo?
No. But I had read some of his other books. I first read the script sent to me by David Cronenberg and only after the novel. The script is so faithful to the book that seems almost incredible, especially considering that Cosmopolis was deemed impossible to adapt. Even before reading DeLillo’s work, I was struck by the pace of the screenplay was agitated and the relentless tension.

What was it about this film that has attracted your attention?
Cronenberg, without a doubt! I shot a few films and I could not imagine how it would work with him. I was not disappointed … I knew he would play with his creativity and that this experience would have scored. I left the script involving the same way you can be fascinated by a long poem, a poem very mysterious. Usually, when you read a script, you quickly understand what it’s about, where it will go and how it will end, although there are unexpected twists and sophisticated solutions that address the course of history. With the script of Cosmopolis, however, was completely different: the more I read and I could not understand how it would be more evolved and pushed me to think of wanting to be part of the film. Would not it be like shooting a movie any, but a separate and unique opportunity.

The first time he read the script we have seen in the role, you imagined how it would be?
Not at all. The first time I spoke with David I have explained that I could not prefigurami nothing and he reassured me that was a good sign. Since then, I have asked many questions and I left all the text to evolve in a progressive and organic, in transforming visual choices that would form the film. It was a living process, although during the first week of filming we were all still wondering which way he took everything once finished shooting. Everything was very charming, it was as if the film was modeled step by step.

Now it is ready, the film is very different from the script or, conversely, has stuck to what was on paper?
Hard to say, the film moves on several levels. I’ve seen it twice so far. The first I was amazed by its farcical side: while touring knew what they were seeing on the screen but the tone was alienating. The second time, however, has taken over the weight of what they had been involved. It has been two private screenings to test the reception of the public, whose reactions were varied and wide ranging, from smiles to the tension.Despite its complexity, I was amazed at how Cosmopolis was able to cause such a wide range of emotions.

In your opinion, who is Eric Packer? As you describe it?
For me, Eric feels like a person who belongs to another world, living as if he had been born on another planet and then tries to discover who really should live. Very simply, Packer does not understand how the world works and how.

However, it has enough knowledge of the world he lives to be able to create a fortune.
Yes, but in a very abstract. Banking, brokerage and speculative activities are unconnected. If managed well in all it is not because it is an industry specialist. If anything, it is very rare with an instinct, something very mysterious and profound, which can treat the algorithms as if they were spells. In the film, as in the book, you can see that his approach to financial data tends to show it again in the future, as they do not know how to live the present. Perhaps, somehow, manages to capture the mechanisms of the world around him but only in a particular way and obscure.

Has discussed this with David Cronenberg?
A little, yes. But he liked when I was looking for answers to something inexplicable. In particular, appreciated as I began to pray without really knowing what I was doing and, as soon as he realized that I was giving birth to the sequences of cause and effect, I froze. It was a very strange way to direct, based entirely on feelings rather than ideas.

Jack Morrissey’s latest podcast addressed a lot of Breaking Dawn Part 2 related items that have come up recently, especially the reshoots that are taking place. Twilight Examiner listened closely and grabbed some important items to share with you guys.

“Additional photography” versus “Re-shoots”

Morrissey explained that the appropriate term for the shots being done is “additional photography” and not “re-shoots.” Quite frankly, he stated that the shots being done in Vancouver were the consequence of missed second unit assignments.

“Here’s what I will say. The director, Bill Condon, has said to me several times, as recently as a week ago, that it is a particular point of pride for him, given his overall body of work, to have taken into production a 100 day shooting scheduled movie, a giant movie that would be released as two parts, and to have come out the other side of that and to not have a single day to not have a single scene directed by him in the so-called main unit . . . re-shot. And that includes what’s to come. Not one shot directed by the main unit over the course of 100 days on these two Breaking Dawn movies has needed to be re-shot or will need to be re-shot . . . Nothing that he directed has been re-shot or will be re-shot, which then leads us to be able to say that most of [what’s to come] is stuff that’s from the second unit,” Jack Morrissey said.

“On Breaking Dawn, for everything that was to the second unit director . . . was drawn out, storyboarded, developed and agreed to, so everybody knew exactly what those shots were meant to look like once they were executed . . . The coming additional photography is stuff that was conceived, developed, and was to be executed by the second unit during the period of principal photography. For various reasons, it was not executed by the second unit . . . So, now, because it was not executed by the second unit, up you all go . . . to get what should’ve been gotten [during] principal photography. It’s just that simple.”

It has been expected for weeks now that On the Road and Cosmopolis, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson respectively, would appear at Cannes Film Festival next month. The lineup for the fest has been revealed, and both films are confirmed to be premiering there.

We can only assume Rob and Kristen will be in France to support their films and look forward to hearing what they have to say about them, hearing reviews of the films, and hopefully seeing some new bits of each!

Pattinson has just become attached as a supporting actor in director Cronenberg’s upcoming darkly comedic drama, MAPS TO THE STARS. The pic, to which Viggo Mortensen is already attached, details the story of two child actors ruined by Hollywood’s depravity. Pattinson is said to play Jerome, a chauffeur by day and struggling actor by night. Scribe Bruce Wagner, who was originally set to direct until Cronenberg took the reigns in 2006, penned the script.
