Chris Weitz talked to Venice Magazine about his latest film, A Better Life, but he answered a couple of Twilight: New Moon related questions, including what it was like to take on such a highly visible film, complete with big action sequences, special effects, and a large budget.

What was it like when you started Twilight: New Moon, which was such a highly visible project?

For me, it was tremendously refreshing because I knew that people were going to go see it. So there’s no pressure on me, as far as I’m concerned. Instead of treating it in any way like a popcorn movie, I just decided to treat it like a big, widescreen romance. That conditioned getting Alexandre Desplat to write the score and getting Javier Aguirresarobe, who’s one of the great DPs in the world, to shoot it. I knew that if I was true to the spirit of the book, there were all kinds of things I could get away with in terms of what we were doing with the camera and the lushness of the colors and the design. It was a complete delight. Kristen Stewart is an amazing actress. Really, she’s an independent film actress of the highest caliber. So she will bring to what’s essentially a melodrama these very harsh emotions. Coming out the other end of it when we were marketing the film, that was madness — in a very enjoyable way for me because I kind of got to be the Ringo Starr of the group. We traveled around Europe, the big three and me, and the biggest it got was Munich’s Olympic Stadium with 23,000 screaming fans who were there just to see us say hello and answer a few softball questions. There were moments where you felt that this could get dangerous or this could get really weird, really fast. It was rather extraordinary.

Having worked on these effects-heavy films, do you find it challenging to oversee both the big action scenes as well as the relationships between the characters?

Yes, it’s enough to drive you slightly batty. With Golden Compass, that was as big a movie as New Line had ever made. It’s certainly the biggest movie I’ve ever made. It cost a tremendous amount of money and we had all kinds of resources at our disposal. And at the same time it had to be an intimate story about the coming of age of a little girl, but it’s also about parallel universes and it was also about original sin and all kinds of stuff. And eventually, it became too much for the studio to want to deal with on straightforward terms. They realized that they had gotten into a story that was far more controversial than they had ever thought. They wanted Harry Potter and this story was inherently not. So to be honest, doing New Moon — even though it’s a very big movie and we had a big budget and a lot of special effects — this was, for me, technically easy.

The numbers from Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘s opening day are in, and it has officially taken another Twilight Saga record – this time the Opening Day record previously belonging to The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

Harry Potter‘s opening day totals reportedly came in at $92.1 million, well exceeding New Moon‘s record of $72.7 million in 2009.

This means that HP has also taken the New Moon records for Single Day Gross and Single Friday Gross.

When you have just released a blockbuster film that made gazillions of dollars like New Moon, you might be expected to follow up with another giant film. Instead, Chris Weitz stepped it down a bunch of levels with small film A Better Life, also released by Summit Entertainment.  In a new interview with Movieline, Chris discusses his relationship with Summit, and explains their support.

Many directors might see a Twilight gig as a stepping stone to getting bigger and bigger films, but you sort of did the opposite following New Moon, which was interesting, and it’s your second film in a row at Summit. What’s the secret of the relationship you have here?

I didn’t have the Inception kind of thing in my mind, that Dark Knight was going to allow me to do. I had A Better Life, that New Moon was going to allow me to do — not so much because it was a quid pro quo, because Summit didn’t see the script for The Gardener until we were halfway through New Moon. They just liked it. I said, “You do understand that I’m not going to do anymore vampire movies?” And they said, “Yeah, we get it, it’s OK — we love this script, let’s do it!” I think there was just this degree of trust established between me and Summit, whom I’ve known for a long time. I’ve known the people there for a long time, Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman and Eric Feig, and they trust that I can deliver what I say I’m going to when I show them a script that they like, and I trust them in terms of keeping their promises and what they want, and also how avidly they’re going to try to market something.

Chris Weitz talks about his “romantic” side coming out when he took on the job of directing New Moon. From NPR:

Making New Moon involved creating CGI animals and fight scenes and working with teen stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. It also involved learning something about himself, says Weitz.

“I realized that I’m a bit of a teenage girl myself,” he says. “I think I spent most of my late teens and 20s pining after people who were never going to come back. I remember explaining this to Stephanie Meyer and, maybe she didn’t believe me … but I’d read too many 19th century English novels and I was very, very romantic, so having the book — and having Kristen who’s an exceptional actor — and then having that melancholic tendency in myself, I think we were all OK.”

IndieWIRE has a great new interview with Chris Weitz about moving from massive blockbuster Twilight to his next film A Better Life. The two are very different, so what led him to A Better Life? Read on to find out.

The last two movies I directed, “The Golden Compass” and “New Moon,” had the combined budgets and box office of the GDP of a small country in the Caucasus. This is something you’re meant to feel sheepish about, as though you were a dealer in, say, ground-to-air missiles rather than cinema. In fact, the experience of making these films was emotionally grueling rather than glitzy.

When I turned in my director’s cut for “The Golden Compass,” the studio concluded that I was trying to turn a popcorn movie into the world’s most expensive art film; they fired my editor and took the cut from me.

“New Moon” was all about getting back on the horse for me and working with some very talented people – Kristen Stewart, Alexandre DesPlat, the great Spanish cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe. I wanted to make a lush widescreen romance out of a ‘tweener phenomenon and I knew the audience would come. I would say, “They’re expecting a cheeseburger, but I’m going to give them foie gras.”

According to a report from the Examiner :

Each year, the Guinness World Records book chronicles the biggest, smallest, longest, and shortest records associated with nearly every conceivable aspect of the world, but being placed in the text is a very coveted feat, so it’s a pretty big deal that New Moon made this year’s cut.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon also has number one opening day and single day gross totals.

Casting director Rene Haynes, who was involved in casting the first three Twilight films, discusses casting the Quileutes for the films, as well as casting for Winter in the Blood, which stars Chaske Spencer.

Haynes enjoyed casting Native Americans for the popular vampire film “Twilight” sequels “New Moon” and “Eclipse,” notably as characters that morph into giant wolves. Fans of “Twilight” were enthusiastic.

“It was like being at the center of a really crazy pop-culture cyclone,” Haynes said. She’s proud of the young native actors she cast for the “Twilight” films, including “great new faces” such as Australian actor Xavier Samuel.

“I am not part of the casting team of the last two films in the series,” Haynes said in an e-mail interview. “However, it hasn’t stopped the flow of ‘Twilight’-related e-mail I get every week, mostly from people that want to know if I can ask Rob Pattinson to attend their birthday party. Sorry; that answer will always be no.”

Haynes lately has been casting for the film “Winter in the Blood,” based on the James Welch novel, for filmmakers Alex and Andrew Smith, who “have written a great script,” she said. More than 500 Montanans have already auditioned, with filming expected to begin during the summer. Haynes said there may be more casting calls; check online by visiting www.winterinthebloodfilm.com.

We’ve been waiting ten years for Stevie Nicks to bless us with new music and when we got word that she was releasing a new album in the spring, we were simply overwhelmed with joy. We also began to wonder what inspired Stevie to go back into the studio after all this time to make more music. We got our answer today:

Twilight!

This is no joke. The love between a vampire and an average human girl apparently spoke to Stevie on a very deep level and she was catapulted back into songwriting mode. In the press release for the new album, In Your Dreams, she explains:

“I had written a song in Brisbane, Australia when I was on tour with Fleetwood Mac in 2009 called ‘Moonlight — A Vampire’s Dream’ which was inspired by the ‘New Moon’ film. When I finished writing that song, which came together really quickly, I knew the time was right to start recording. We had a core group of five people who were at the heart of the creation of ‘In Your Dreams.’ Dave and myself, my longtime friend and musical director, Waddy Wachtel, and my girls, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks. It was a perfect blend.”

Wow. Isn’t that something?! So many people knock it, but you can’t deny, the power of Twilight is strong!

The LA Times reports that the sale of digital movie downloads was up 40% in 2010 and that New Moon was one of the biggest digital downloads (via iTunes) in December, 2010.

Although there are no industrywide charts for digital downloads, Apple reported in December that the most popular movies of the year on iTunes were, in order, “The Hurt Locker,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” “Hot Tub Time Machine,” “Iron Man 2″ and “Zombieland,” according to CNET News.

Doesn’t it seem strange that there is no industry-wide measurement of digital downloads of movies (legal downloads, that is). Seems like the industry is missing out on some majorly huge data!

“Essentially what it’s doing is it’s taking the vampire story back to its gothic romance roots, which I think is very interesting. It’s a melodrama in the best possible sense. Remember that gothic romances came out of that melodramatic tradition, and actually I think that this criticism that’s been added by some people – ‘Oh, she’s a mopey heroin, she just moans’ – is completely wrong. Actually, the whole story is about her emotional state, and we got to a point where we’ve forgotten that having stories that are based on peoples’ emotional states, is perfectly legitimate. In fact, it is the defining factor and in the end, the whole story is about the choices she makes and who she chooses to be and which world she feels secure in . . .”

This is a story that makes a fangirl feel good.  Twilight Saga New Moon and Eclipse still both beat out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 in midnight sales!

According to Market Watch:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I made $24 million in its debut during the wee hours Friday, enough to pull into third place among films with midnight screenings, according to figures from box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

Deathly Hallows fell behind two films in the Twilight series. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse still is tops with its $30 million-plus debut earlier this year on June 30. And The Twilight Saga: New Moon comes in second at $26.3 million for its Nov. 20, 2009 midnight release.

Now for a couple of theories on why. Twilight Lexicon thinks:

In fairness to the Potter chain, Eclipse opened at roughly 4,400 theaters opening day while Potter opened at roughly 4,100. (Stats via Box Office Mojo).

That statistic aside, perhaps at seven movies people sit back and wait to see a movie like that right away.  The Harry Potter audience has grown up and has jobs and things to do other than a midnight screening.  The box office for the weekend will be phenomenal and Potter will break records this weekend, there’s no doubt about that.  It just takes a lot for some people to come to a midnight screening anymore.  What do you think?

It has been announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon will make its television premiere on Showtime in January of 2011.

In other Showtime scheduling news, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” will have its cable television premiere on Saturday, January 8. The second “Twilight” film took in nearly $710 million at the worldwide box office after its 2009 release.

Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale told J-14 that she is such a big Twilight fan that when the movies were being cast, she auditioned for both Alice and Jane.  Here is what Lucy said about the process.

“I auditioned for [the role of] Alice,” Lucy says. “I read the books and I wanted to be part of the first movie so bad.”

The role ultimately went to Ashley Greene, but Lucy didn’t give up on her vampire dreams. “I heard about this new role, Jane, who was going to be a part of the second one, and I went for that,” she says. But, alas, Dakota Fanning was chosen to play Jane instead. …

“I love everyone they’ve cast,” she says. “I’m such a believer in everything happens for a reason and it’s all about timing. I like where I’m at right now!”

Actor Tyler Posey also mentioned to Teen Vogue that he was up for the role of Jacob Black and that it was down to him and Taylor Lautner.

“It was between me and Taylor Lautner for the role of Jacob Black. I haven’t seen it yet, but I don’t have anything against it.

In June, when several fan sites got the opportunity to talk with Stephenie Meyer, they chatted with the Twilight author about the casting choices for the ancient Volturi, first seen in New Moon. Here is what she had to say about Michael Sheen, Jamie Campbell Bower and Christopher Heyerdahl. From Twifans:

ARO…………….

SM: We kicked around a lot of names with that. And Michael Sheen was Chris’ choice (Chris Weitz, director). “Frost/Nixon,” he’s a great actor, but I couldn’t see him as Aro.

Alison: Oh, Lucian! (the character he played in the “Underworld” movies)

SM: Well, I hadn’t seen the “Underworld” thing, and I was like, “I don’t know,” I kinda had a different mental image. I had this actor, that actor that I wanted. And he talked me into it. First day I saw him on set, I went up to Chris and I said “thank you so much. You were right, I was wrong. I will listen to you forever, because you were SOO right on that one.”

Nikki (LTT): When he delivered that line, it’s just like, “oooooh!!”

SM: It was a delight to watch him go in there. Every little take he did something different. He did slightly different things. Always, of course, lines were perfect. Never a mistake, but he would give something different for the director to pull from. And he’s so great, he’s a really interesting guy. So much fun to talk to.

Bekah (LTT): My husband, who thinks I’m crazy, when Michael Sheen was in…

SM: That’s one of the reasons I love that movie…I love watching him, where every time he comes on, I’m like, “Say something!”

SM: I hate that Jamie Campbell Bower didn’t get as many lines. He is chilling. He actually tried out for Demetri. And he was too scary for Demetri. We were watching it. There was another guy that — Demetri is supposed to be — Charlie (Bewley) was sort-of the in-between. Demetri was supposed to be smoother and calm people down. But then of course, maybe people don’t want to ever have somebody as the peace maker. They want all the tension. So Charlie was scary, but not as scary (laughs) as Jamie. Jamie was CHILL-LING. And that his face took the makeup like nobody else. He has no pores! His skin was perfect! He got in the makeup, and every line he delivered had so much weight. It was like “more, more please.” Caius needs a story. The whole thing with him and Michael Sheen was great. Well, Marcus too.

MARCUS………………….

SM: Chris (Christopher Heyerdahl) is just……….creepy. Creepy. He just did this thing where it sounded like he had 500 years of dust on him. That part of the movie…I was sitting there talking to him, and I didn’t know it was him. He’s bald. I’m used to him with the hair. So I’m sitting there talking to this tall, bald guy, thinking that he was somebody else. And when I realized it was the actor, I’m thinking really quickly back through everything — did he know that I didn’t know who he is? And then I told him…”I didn’t recognize you without the wig and the red eyes and all that…”
