PLEDGEMUSIC CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT UPCOMING SOPHOMORE ALBUM TIDES AND TALES

Hurricane Bells launched a PledgeMusic campaign to support the completion of its sophomore album, Tides and Tales. It will be released this fall via band architect Steve Schiltz’s own label, Invisible Brigades.

As many Twilight fans know, Hurricane Bells’ song “Monsters” was featured on The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s official soundtrack. As a special offer to the Twilight fans that have supported Hurricane Bells, the band has included a number of Twilight-themed incentives in their PledgeMusic drive. Incentives include a signed The Twilight Saga: New Moon official soundtrack, exclusive Hurricane Bells vinyl, signed CDs and t-shirts. Fans who offer more generous support have the opportunity to receive The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack platinum album with the pledger’s name engraved, a vintage Gibson guitar, or an opportunity to have Schiltz mix or play guitar on the pledger’s own songs. Fans who pledge will also be able to stream new track “Let’s Go” from Tides and Tales immediately via the Hurricane Bells’ PledgeMusic page.

Beyond their involvement with Twilight, Hurricane Bells continues to pave a road to success through multiple other musical pursuits.  As with their debut album Tonight Is The Ghost, Tides and Tales was recorded, produced, and mixed almost entirely by Schiltz (longtime front man of Longwave) over the past few months. The funds raised through PledgeMusic will directly contribute to the mastering, manufacturing, touring and promotion of the album.

Hurricane Bells has chosen to donate a portion of all campaign proceeds through PledgeMusic to Education Through Music (http://www.etmonline.org/), a nonprofit organization that promotes and supports music instruction in disadvantaged schools.

For this Thursday’s episode of MTV’s Unplugged, Lykke Li performs her ever-popular song “Possibility,” which was featured during the pivotal sadness over the seasons scene in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

She’s currently promoting the release of her new album, “Wounded Rhymes” (see more on this at her website), and the Unplugged episode airs Thursday at 9:00 p.m. EST.

For the millions of teens (and, let’s face it, adults, too) who follow the Twilight movies, music is a key part of the experience. The soundtrack to New Moon, the second in the series of teen vampire films based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels, features a song called “Possibility,” in which a delicate voice sets the tone for a story of young love and yearning.

Lykke Li says she didn’t necessarily understand the Twilight phenomenon, but she was grateful for the opportunity to influence young listeners watching the films.

“[Twilight has] die-hard fans — all these young people still believing in love and being romantic. I really identify with that. I remember watching films in my teenage years, and you’d be in love with Leonardo DiCaprio and then a song would come on. You’d love that song forever; it changed your life.”

Nowadays Steve Nickerson, Summit Entertainment’s president of home entertainment, isn’t surprised by how well anything “Twilight” does at retail.

So when the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA, announced this month that the combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of Music Videos and Performances from The Twilight Saga Soundtracks Vol. 1 had reached RIAA-certified gold status Nickerson was more pleased than surprised.

“It’s a little bit of a unique project we developed with Atlantic [Records], and we’re happy with the consumer reaction to it,” he said. “Each of the three individual soundtracks did more than well, and while any of the videos may be available through the individual artists, to put them all together in a product was a unique opportunity,”

This “visual soundtrack” ($34.99 Blu-ray, $26.99 DVD) features music videos and live performances from bands featured on the soundtracks of The Twilight Saga: Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, including Muse, Paramore, Death Cab For Cutie and Cee Lo Green. More than 20 songs are included, and bonus features include two more performances: Debussy “Clair de Lune” and Verdi “La Traviata.” The collection also is available for download via iTunes.

Nickerson knows most “Twilight” fans are already hip to the collection, but he has a message for those who haven’t happened on it yet: “If you’re a fan of the movies and you’re a fan of the music, you should take a look at it.”

While this may have come as a surprise to some, as a Twilight fan and avid lover of music, this is no surprise to me at all!  Twilight’s music ROCKS!

Lykke Li’s haunting song “Possibility” appeared on the New Moon soundtrack. In this interview, she talks about getting the call to write a song for the film.

“I was sitting in a car in England [when I got the call],” she remembers, “eating a sandwich from Tesco, and I had no idea what Twilight was. Somebody explained it as this thing about vampires and I’m like, ‘I hate vampires.’ But when I thought about it, there are so few pop culture things today, where people are really crazy about something, like Beatlemania, so I thought, how cool to be part of something that so many young, open hearts listen to.” Though she might not have been the obvious choice, Li knows why they approached her. “‘Cos I represent lonely hearts, you know. Kind of emo I guess.” She lets out a rare giggle. “I’m definitely emo, yes.”

Only the most try-hard of Twihards remember the exact rules of vampire baseball. But you might recall hearing Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” as the Cullen family stepped up to the plate in the first installment of the Twilight Saga. But then, maybe that’s not your favorite Twilight musical moment (scenes involving goofy baseball shirts so infrequently are). Maybe you’re more into swooning along to Iron & Wine’s “Flightless Bird” as Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) slow-dance at their school prom (Twilight). Or gasping over Bella’s near-death visions of Edward as Grizzly Bear’s “Slow Life” burbles up from the watery depths (New Moon). Whatever your favorite Twilight track is, though, Alexandra Patsavas had a part in it.

Dose.ca: Could you tell me how you go about putting together music for a Twilight soundtrack? When does work begin?

Alexandra Patsavas: The work begins once the supervisor is hired and the script is distributed. We [the director, the producers and later, the artists] spend a lot of time during production while the movie’s being shot just starting to talk about music, starting to have a conversation about tone and feel, but the real work begins after the movie is shot so we can start to pair music with footage.

Dose.ca: Is it a different process working on a Twilight movie than any other project you’ve done?

Patsavas: It’s been an incredible process. Of course there’s been three Twilight movies that have been released and a great deal of interest from some pretty particular artists and that’s been really a wonderful experience. And also we’ve had many bands come into the cutting room and really work directly with the director to create music for these movies. Beck came in the cutting room and Lykke Li and Grizzly Bear, Mute Math — so we’ve had quite a few bands really tailoring music for the movies. Hayley Williams, as well, from Paramore.

Dose.ca: How unusual is that?

Patsavas: You know, I think it is pretty unusual unless it’s a movie about musicians or bands, in which case it’s a whole different animal. It’s pretty unusual to have so many bands creating signature pieces for a project.

Dose.ca: Why has that been such a priority for these movies?

Patsavas: I think more than anything [Twilight Saga author] Stephenie Meyer has always referenced music and included playlists, and music is a big part of Twilight. And the producers and directors wanted to feature it.

Dose.ca: What do you keep in mind when selecting songs for the movies, apart from what Meyer has written in the books. What are the things you’re thinking of?

Patsavas: I think that music really resonates with fans when it enhances the emotions in the scene and the acting, so I think more than anything we’re trying to make — to make the score and the songs seamless. To make sure all the songs feel like Twilight songs. And tell a story to the audience. … I think definitely we’re always thinking about Bella and Edward and Jacob and just about the atmosphere ofTwilight itself. There are characters and then there is the character of Twilight. … I think the music has to evoke, you know, it’s got an indie feel, it has a smart lyric, it has a memorable hook. Of course, over the three movies we have sourced many different kinds of scenes — love scenes and love-lost scenes, and fight scenes, but I think there’s a certain through-line.

Alexandre Desplat has taken top honors at the World Soundtrack Awards for the second year running.

He was named film composer of the year on Saturday evening for his work on “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “New Moon,” “Julie & Julia” and “The Ghost Writer.”

A recent article from NME has revealed how the great new music is picked for each Twilight soundtrack.

Music supervisors Paul Katz and Alexandra Patsavas have claimed that choosing songs from big artists, plus smaller acts such as Fanfarlo and Bombay Bicycle Club, doesn’t stem from an attempt to cash in on bands’ cool factors.

“We have forward-thinking directors and they have a progressive music taste,” Patsavas said. “It’s completely natural.”

And some hints as to why they picked the music they did this time around:

Patsavas said an important factor was the tone of each scene. “This is the battle movie,” she said of Eclipse. “So there should be some conflict in the music, so we have a band like The Dead Weather there.”

SUMMIT HOME ENTERTAINMENT’S SATURDAY RELEASE OF THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON LEADS TO SPECTACULAR FIRST WEEKEND SALES

First Weekend DVD Sales of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON Surpasses First Weekend Sales of TWILIGHT in 2009

Los Angeles, CA March 23, 2010 – Summit Entertainment announced today that the home entertainment release of the studio’s action-packed, modern day vampire love story THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON sold just over 4 million DVD units in its first weekend of release. The tally surpasses the first weekend sales of TWILIGHT in 2009 which sold 3.8 million DVD units, and went on to be the top selling DVD title of the year with 9.2 million units sold. The DVD launch of NEW MOON commenced this past Saturday morning with 7,000 retail locations nationwide taking part in events at midnight giving fans their first chance to obtain a DVD of the film.

Thousands of TWILIGHT fans across the nation participated in the “NEW MOON at Midnight” event and some were treated to surprise appearances by members of the cast as well as the film’s director. Fans saw actors Justin Chon who plays Eric, Christian Serratos who plays Angela, and Michael Welch who plays Mike in Salt Lake City; director Chris Weitz and Nikki Reed who plays Rosalie Hale in Los Angeles; Peter Facinelli who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen in New York; Edi Gathegi who plays Laurent in Pittsburgh; and Liz Reaser who plays Esme Cullen in Phoenix. Other cast members of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON made appearances nationwide including Kiowa Gordon and Tinsel Korey in Cincinnati; Charlie Bewley in Denver; Chaske Spencer and Tyson Houseman in Atlanta; Daniel Cudmore in Houston; and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg in Seattle.

Summit Entertainment’s Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger stated, “Once again the incredibly dedicated fans of the TWILIGHT SAGA came out in massive numbers this weekend for the opportunity to be one of the first take home the second movie in the series. As we have said all along, the fans are what make this franchise and we once again thank them for their support.”

The band Muse has been huge worldwide, and especially in the UK, for several years, but have had some difficulty breaking into the American music scene.  Well, it seems Twilight has helped them out a bit on that front, and they know it!  Here is what they had to say about it.

Muse believe their appearance on the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga films has helped them win fans in America.

The band have contributed songs to the opening two films in the popular vampire franchise, including the recent hit New Moon.

Speaking to Asia One, bassist Chris Wolstenholme said the group were originally unaware about The Twilight Saga’s cult following.

“I was vaguely aware of the books (before author Stephenie Meyer approached us) but we didn’t think anything of it at the time,” he said.

“The next thing you know, it’s Twilight fever. It’s good because it has made a difference for us in trying to break into America.”

Mark Morton, the Soundtrack Examiner listed his top twenty soundtracks of 2009, and New Moon (the score) makes the list at number 9!

9. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON (Alexandre Desplat) – Go ahead, call me a sellout, but Desplat’s motifs on this score will not leave my head. I was actually agonizing over which Desplat release to include on this list (he did seven scores for 2009), and I had narrowed it down to this one and Coco Avant Chanel. And while Coco was ultra-elegant and sophisticated, it ultimately seemed formulaic for Desplat’s ability. New Moon, on the other hand, is what happens when a composer truly loses himself in his music. Each chord progression is a different emotion, swelling and swooning as it reaches its impending detonation. Whether or not you’ve seen the movie, it is challenging not to be moved by Desplat’s work herein.

Why does it remind me of Beauty and the Beast?? lol

You may not have heard of Grizzly Bear before their song “Slow Life” showed up on the New Moon soundtrack.  Pitchfork recently interviewed frontman Chris Taylor and asked him about the soundtrack and their contribution.

Pitchfork: Going off the idea that indie music is continuing to grow, there’s the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack, which hit number one on the Billboard charts and is loaded with indie artists– including Grizzly Bear. Were you surprised to be asked to be on that soundtrack?

CT: Initially, it was like, “What?!” But Thom Yorke did it, and we like him. It’s like: “If dad does it, it’s OK, right?” Radiohead are like parents of good modern rock ‘n’ roll in certain ways. They paved that path. They’ve always maintained such a classy vibe environmentally, musically, and as just polite, down-to-earth people. They’re really something to look up to and it’s comforting to know that bands like that can make great music and it can be well received and they can set a precedent.

We wrote and recorded the song in a couple days, handed it in, and crossed our fingers. We were like, “They’re not going to take it.” But they did. We’re also working on two other soundtracks at the moment that I think are getting wrapped up. They’re for much more independent movies– I can’t say what they are yet, though.

Pitchfork: How familiar are you with the whole Twilight universe? Have you read any of the books?

CT: I don’t think I’d really read the books. I’ve seen parts of the first movie, but I haven’t actually sat down and watched the whole thing. I’m interested to see the new one. I find the relationship between the Mormon element and the dark vibe intriguing; the sexy vampire element is fun.

Spin.com talked with Alexsandra Patsavas, the music supervisor who was responsible for compiling the music on the New Moon soundtrack.  She is also responsible for the Twilight soundtrack (as well as TV shows Mad Men, Gossip Girl & Grey’s Anatomy).  here is what she has to say about the New Moon soundtrack.

How you go about something like New Moon, which features original songs from so many artists who don’t often appear in projects this high-profile?
The work starts as soon as the script is finished and distributed. Chris Weitz, the director, had a very specific point of view about how he wanted the music to feel. There’s a lot of separation and longing and loss in the movie; the bands and lyrics and sound and arrangements had to reflect that. Some folks, like Lykke Li, the Killers, Grizzly Bear, OK Go, and Anya Marina all came into the cutting room and sat with Chris to watch the movie and talk about their contributions. Other tracks were submitted with the movie in mind. I think it’s very difficult to succeed without any context.

A lot of people were surprised by Thom Yorke’s inclusion. How did that come about?
A Radiohead song ["15 Step"] played over the end titles of Twilight, so we had a relationship. I believe this is the first soundtrack he’s been on in a long time, so that’s exciting. A lot of bands were interested in submitting great material, which helps a lot.

It does seem like music that the characters would actually listen to, which is certainly not always the case in soundtrack tie-ins.
I think the music has to be inspired by the characters’ lives, but it’s not always just used as source material—it’s used to score as well. Chris used the Bon Iver/St. Vincent track ["Rosyln"] and Thom Yorke track ["Hearing Damage"] in spots that would have traditionally been scored. I grew up in Chicago in the ‘70s and ‘80s, so those John Hughes movies were important to me. He created a world but also cleverly introduced mainstream kids to non-mainstream kids.

According to Variety, The Twilight Saga: New Moon official soundtrack is number one of the music charts this week!  The album debuted at number 2 last week but has moved into the top position!

The indie-rock soundtrack for Summit’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” moves up a notch to take the No. 1 slot on the U.S. album chart this week.

The Chop Shop/Atlantic title, which debuted at No. 2 last week after three days in stores, sold 155,000 copies in its first full stanza, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ending Oct. 25. Teen vampire pic, featuring songs by Death Cab For Cutie, the Killers, Grizzly Bear and other indie acts, opens Nov. 20.

According to AntiMusic.com, Sea Wolf, Death Cab for Cutie, Anya Marina, and Band of Skulls will be performing at the Cast Tour event sponsored by Hot Topic on November 6 in Hollywood (at Hollywood & Highland). Now I want to go even more.

Hurricane Bells will release their debut album Tonight Is The Ghost digitally on November 10, 2009 via Vagrant Records.

Hurricane Bells – a new project from Steve Schiltz, the singer and guitarist of Longwave for nearly ten years – has been garnering serious attention lately for a relatively new and largely unknown band after an album b-side, “Monsters,” was chosen for the soundtrack of the second film in the Twilight franchise, New Moon.  Suddenly Schiltz’s bedroom (or basement, technically) project, which he had originally planned on self-releasing, was part of one of the most talked about current pop culture phenomena.

Hurricane Bells began when after touring the better part of the last year around Longwave’s fourth album Secrets Are Sinister (a critical success and arguably the best of the band’s career), Schiltz set up shop to create a new project with little else than his MacBook and an Mbox. Writing, playing, recording, and mixing every note himself, he arranged what would become Hurricane Bells’ debut, Tonight Is The Ghost.  Some songs were fully crafted within the past 18 months, while others are newly architected from pieces written throughout his years as a songwriter.

Tonight Is The Ghost is a moody, gorgeous mix of somber undercurrents and chiming guitars bathed in echo and reverb.  Running the musical gamut from hauntingly melancholic (“This Year”, “Tenterhooks”) to driving, guitar-jangling pop (“This Is A Test”, “Darkness Is So Deep”) to mournful, lovely atmospheric ballads (“I Can’t Remember”, “Tonight I’m Going To Be Like A Shooting Star”), the songs are all linked by a distinctive late-night feel that threads a certain ease and soulfulness throughout the album.

New Moon will be featured on the cover of the upcoming issue of Billboard magazine!  And the article is already up over at Billboard.  They talk in detail about how the songs were chose and how they relate to the story of New Moon! Here is a quick snippet:

For the next three months, Atlantic wants to make the “New Moon” soundtrack inescapable. The label is teaming with teen lifestyle all-stars to promote the album: Hot Topic, MTV and MySpace. For those too old to wear black nail polish, the soundtrack also will be sold at Whole Foods, Nordstrom’s, Hallmark and Hollywood Video.

But besides its omnipresence, there’s a secret weapon the label is deploying for “New Moon.” The soundtrack features tracks from Thom Yorke, Bon Iver & St. Vincent, Lykke Li and Sea Wolf, among others-and they’re all exclusive to the album.

“We had offers from artists that were incredibly wonderful and incredibly commercial, and it would have been easy to say, ‘Oh, let’s go for it because we’ll sell more records’-but it wouldn’t have been true to the project,” says Paul Katz, founder/CEO of Eye2Ear Music, which consults with Summit Entertainment on music; Katz produced the soundtrack album and has been involved since the script stage to determine where music could fit into the film.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack premiered this week and comes in number 2 behind Michael Bublé. The soundtrack is expected to stay pretty high on the charts through the premiere of the film on November 20, 2009.

Buble also fends off the much-hyped soundtrack to “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which lands at No. 2 on the strength of 115,000 copies sold. Yet “New Moon” is likely in it for the long haul. The soundtrack to the first film sits at No. 63, having sold just under 2.3 million copies to date.

Additionally, “New Moon” won’t be released in theaters until Nov. 20, and expect the soundtrack to still be in the upper echleon of the chart when the film hits theaters.

His Golden Eyes has an exclusive interview with artist Hurricane Bells, whose song “Monsters” appears on the New Moon soundtrack.

1. We’re just going start with the most basic question fans usually want to know. Did you ever heard about or perhaps even read the series before you became involved with the Saga? If so, what was your first encounter with the twilight world?
i really was pretty unaware. i had heard of “twilight”, but i had never read any of the books or seen the movie. i found out about my song being selected for the soundtrack, and my friend gave me the first two books and said, “you need to read these”. i am halfway through “new moon” now.

2. As you probably have guessed by now, the twilight fandom is pretty intense (in the best possible way). Have things changed for you at all after track listing came out?
a little bit, yep! i have a record called “tonight is the ghost” that i have been planning to put out, and the soundtrack has changed those plans…i think we may release it sooner now, and perhaps with a real label, as opposed to my putting it out myself. so it’s very exciting.

3. The soundtrack for the first album was very successful. An anomaly in the music business, if you will. How did you get involved with the New Moon soundtrack? Were you contacted by the music director or did you directly pursue the project?
well i have a publisher that pitches songs of mine for me. it was basically done through them. i am not sure how much work went into getting it done. i don’t like to know about those things until they are certain….it can be heartbreaking otherwise, if things don’t actually happen.
but i do know that a lot of people i know were also trying to get songs into the movie, as well…

4. As for the song itself, is there anything you can tell us about it? For example, was it written exclusively for the movie or if you were inspired by certain characters, relationships etc.
no, i had it sitting around for awhile. i left it off of my record because i didn’t feel like it fit somehow. the song is a kinda catchy, up feeling song with some darker lyrics. there is a lot of fuzzed out guitar, and a pretty ripping guitar solo. it was only after i thought about it a bit that i could see how it might fit into the movie.
another thing about it was that i recorded it myself, in my band rehearsal room and my apartment. i mixed it in my friend’s basement. so there were no big studios, and no one else involved except me. no record label. i played all of the instruments, it was like an obsession. so it is pretty amazing to me now that it sits on a record alongside the killers and thom yorke, etc.

5. Were you inspired by anything non-twilight related for the song?
hmm, i just liked the idea of the words, some downer words with this happy little melody.

6. Could you give us a little teaser of the lyrics to your song?
sure, the main line is, “wait, you gotta look before you go, deep into the darkness where i hide”. the song is called “monsters”.

Alexandre Desplat, the composer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon score, featured on the New Moon soundtrack with ‘New Moon (The Meadow)’, was named Film Composer of the Year at the World Soundtrack Awards. The ceremony took place on Saturday night in Brussels.

Alexandre Desplat was named film composer of the year at the World Soundtrack Awards on Saturday night. Ceremony is closing event of the Ghent Film Festival.

The French composer was honored for his work on “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Coco Before Chanel,” “Largo Winch” and “Cheri.”

“Button” also got the nod for original film score of the year.

I am sure his score for New Moon wasn’t eligible.

The New Moon soundtrack has been pushed up to be released this Friday! And here is a track-by-track review from the Examiner:

New Moon is less a compilation of potential hit singles and more a conceptual album, though comprising 15 artists, bound thematically by mood, atmosphere, and attentive delivery. Here is a track-by-track analysis of the entire album:

1. Death Cab for Cutie – Meet Me on the Equinox
Upon an initial listen, the vocal tone has a retro, late 60s/early 70s vibe, like a cross between The Animals, The Kinks, and The Doors. The song is a good, moody, driving ditty. It has a bit of a Your Vegas structure to it, as well, because it has a bit of an upbeat tempo, but the message in the song fits in with the morose tone of the movie. The music has some great contrasting elements, because it consistently shifts between a gentle sob and a mournful scream. It ends very poignantly and abruptly, as if to say, “That’s it. Deal with it.”

2. Band of Skulls – Friends
This one has a very angst-y feel to it with a Ramones vibe – very punk-inspired rock. It is also very raw and impassioned, with a definite throwback sound. The chorus sounds almost akin to a sock-hop. But then this extremely dissonant lead guitar washes over the song, almost punching you in the face with post-modernism.

3. Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage
Yorke’s cut starts with a rumbling electronic sound, like an embittered NES. However, the track is very depressive in design. The vocals carry the song more than the music does. It is quite minimalistic with keyboard, drum loop and Yorke’s vocal, which affects a sort of Peter Murphy / Morrissey tone to his delivery. It’s probably un-PC to say it, but there is definitely some wrist-opening action here. The verses are very low in the mix, almost mumbled, as if to convey that the words are not as important as the brooding emotion Yorke is expressing.

4. Lykke Li – Possibility
The song startled me because it almost sounds like a child singing, with extreme echo on the voice, and a piano trolling in the distance. It sounds like a child who has just finished crying – very raspy and full of despair; evoking the feeling of loneliness very well. Li vocal performance reminds of a hybrid of Bjork and Susanna Hoffs. “Possibility” is another minimalistic song, with the vocals dominating the music. However, it is very character-driven, bringing an element of confused innocence to the table.

5. The Killers – A White Demon Love Song
There are several things going on in this song right from the opening – a tickling synthesizer, very light and breezy guitars, and vocal melody with a classic Beatles sound to it, like a cross between Sgt. Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour. However, the song lulls along almost drunkenly, but as the volume increases, it takes on a bit of a David Bowie persona. From there it becomes extremely dense in mood.

6. Anya Marina – Satellite Heart
Marina kicks in with an embittered-sounding acoustic guitar and near-whispering vocals. It is another song that invokes confusion and frustration. It is interesting to hear a largely acoustic song to take on this role. “Satellite Heart” is accented with synthesized orchestration – adding a touch of listenable contentment to the track. I see this as a follow-up or escalation of the Lykke Li track, enhancing the lost innocence persona, like she’s resolved to the fact that whatever has happened has happened and there is no going back.

7. Muse – I Belong To You (New Moon Remix)
The main difference between this version and the version that appears on The Resistance is that the guitar is the primary instrument here, where in the latter, the piano drives the rhythm. The piano is still there, but it has been thrust into the background. Structurally, it sounds more like an early Maroon 5 song than a Muse song, and it bears a serious, single-friendly atmosphere to it. I’d hate to say it, but it would not sound out of place in a James Bond movie. The extraordinarily crisp production value really sets it apart from anything else on the album, as most of the songs on New Moon have a vulnerable rawness to them.

8. Bon Iver & St. Vincent – Rosyln
“Roslyn” slowly emerges with muted guitars, and is another song where the vocalist almost sounds like he/she has been crying before stepping up to the microphone. The vocals are ghostly, and heavily echoed. It is a mildly sluggish, weepy track with a bit of folk energy to it, especially when the banjo accompaniment kicks in. Ultimately, it appears more like an interlude between acts, or the changing of chapters than an actual song.

9. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Done All Wrong
It would seem that a common thread among most songs on this album is using an acoustic guitar as an introductive device. However, this one stands out because it sounds very determined with a hint of bitterness. It is one of those personal, introspective songs that was probably hastily written to retain its rampant emotional turmoil. It also sounds like the kind of song you would hear on a Thursday night in the backroom performance theater inside one of the countless bars in New York City’s Lower East Side. One of the standout elements is that it yields a bit of that Nick Cave sinister-ness to the vocals, as if something subversive is transpiring within the lyrics.

10. Hurricane Bells – Monsters
And now for something completely different, as the Python brigade would say. Hurricane Bells wafts over the album with some heavier rock tones, distorted guitar and a pop-ish melody. There is a distinct New Wave energy about the cut that would not sound out of place in the high school dance sequence in Sixteen Candles. There is a strong resemblance to Psychedelic Furs at moments and conveys a feeling of a person who has lost their way, struggling to find their identity in a world full of plastic people.

11. Sea Wolf – The Violet Hour
These guys sound uncannily like late 80s/early 90s The Cure – utilizing a depressive melody with withered vocals. The middle of the song strikes into a marching rhythm with a trembling dulcimer accompaniment, which gives it a progressive edge. It also smacks a bit of shoegazing. Probably with one other exception, this song puzzles me as to how the audience will react to it, because it does have such a throwback tone to it and doesn’t really resemble “now.”

12. OK Go – Shooting the Moon
OK Go rumbles in with bubbling percussion, acoustic guitar, tambourine, and softly muted vocals that remind of experimental, 1970s art rock. Eventually a Moog-like keyboard worms its way into the music, which adds to the artsy atmosphere. It is a sardonically hopeful song, as it saying, “Sure things are bad, but they can always be a lot worse.”

13. Grizzly Bear (with Victoria Legrand) – Slow Life
Feathery, tranquil acoustic guitar introduces this singer-songwriter song. It explores a strong emphasis on romance and emotional potency. It is something that I could very easily hear during the end credits, invoking strength of will and a passion that refuses to be contained.

14. Editors – No Sound but the Wind
Where Muse threw me for a loop because of its production value, this song jarred me, because of the very strong, brash vocals. It sounds like a very mature man serenading someone a couple decades his junior. It’s actually a little creepy if you think about it, recalling Engelbert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, or Rex Manning from Empire Records. Out of all of them, this song has the most difficult time meshing with the over-arcing theme.

15. Alexandre Desplat – New Moon (The Meadow)
Desplat offers a piano-driven cut – very fluid and hinting at the deep emotional distress occurring throughout the film. It sounds less like a piece of score and more like a solo recording designed for vocal accompaniment. It gives the agonized feeling of not knowing what to think, begging “why is this happening to me? When will the pain end?” It’s seriously a very powerful track. The music is structured in such a way that you can almost imagine that the piano is actually singing. It is a great way to close the album, and a very hopeful hint of what we can expect when the score is released on November 24th.

Lykke Li talked to MTV about getting involved with the New Moon soundtrack and her inspiration for her song ‘Possibility’.

“I get very visual when I make the songs. It’s really quite serious. It’s almost like a fever haze. It’s very repetitive, like a mood you go into. But it’s really serious, because, if you’re really, really in love, and somebody leaves you, that’s a very serious thing,” Li explained. “And so the lyrics are like, ‘When you walk, you walk like a thief with blood on your hands, because I die when you leave me.’ It’s in this limbo that, when the song is done, you don’t know if I’ve survived or not. It’s very much like a fever, like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s hot, she’s going to die, maybe she did die?’ It lingers on, into the next life. It’s dark.”

Officially my favorite song from The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack.  So so good, but makes me quite sad.

Entertainment Weekly has reviewed The Twilight Saga: New Moon official soundtrack, and has given it a grade of ‘A’!  The abundance of talent on this album is undeniable!

On a good day, film soundtracks enhance the moviegoing experience. At their best, they transcend it. The latest sonic accompaniment to Twilight‘s inescapable teen-vampire juggernaut — a swooning conveyance of girl-meets-undead-boy romance, delivered by some of the best established and emerging names in the indie stratosphere — may sway even the most committed Twi-loathers.

After the success of the first installment, music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas (Gossip Girl, Grey’s Anatomy) gets her pick of the alt litter here, with each contributing original, previously unreleased material: From the opening chords of Death Cab for Cutie’s dusky guitar rapture ”Meet Me on the Equinox” to the spooky robot-ennui of Thom Yorke’s ”Hearing Damage” 
 and Grizzly Bear’s gorgeous folk-pop pastoral ”Slow Life,” New Moon rarely falters. A peacocking remix of Muse’s shamelessly operatic ”I Belong to You” becomes a Bowie-esque glam-rock stomper. In its wake, Bon Iver and St. Vincent quietly unfurl ”Rosyln,” a duet of hushed, almost church-like beauty.

Moon (due in stores Oct. 20) yields several happy revelations from its lower-marquee names: Nordic songstress Lykke Li’s nearly a cappella ”Possibility” is a lovely little Swedish snowflake, and jokey rockers OK Go achieve an impressive sort of Flaming Lips-y quirk-gravitas on the sprawling, cinematic ”Shooting the Moon.” Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s acoustic campfire lament ”Done All Wrong” segues seamlessly into the jaunty, Strokes-ian guitar fuzz of Hurricane Bells’ ”Monsters.” Think of New Moon as a sort of survey course in new-now-next rock: a mixtape with teeth. Vanity Fair talked to a few of the bands that will be appearing on the New Moon Soundtrack, including Sea Wolf, St. Vincent and OK Go. Here is the scoop!

The song that Sea Wolf is contributing to the soundtrack is called “The Violet Hour.”

Do you know what scene it will be featured in?

All I know is it’s going to be in a party scene … a house-party scene.

Can you give us some sample lyrics?

Sure.
Your arms are lovely
Yellow and rose
Your back’s a meadow
Covered in snow
Your thighs are thistles
And hothouse grapes
You breathe your sweet breath
And have me wait

Wow, steamy stuff. What do you hope Twilight fans will take from it?

I hope that it speaks to them in a personal way. I put a lot of myself into my songs, but I don’t want to alienate anyone. It’s a good song. I hope people [who buy the soundtrack] will like it and will hopefully seek us out and check out our other records.

How did you feel when you heard you were going to be on the soundtrack?

That it’s a great honor to be included on the soundtrack with the likes of Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, and Death Cab for Cutie. It’s really cool.

Do you know what scene they’re using it for?

I don’t know where the song will be in the film, but I know that Edward and Bella will not have sex to it.

Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob?

I’m not really hip on the whole live-forever thing. That seems like kind of a drag! I’m really happy with life, but the thought of living forever is not my bag. Do werewolves live forever? Because if werewolves don’t live forever, than I think I’d rather be a werewolf. I saw Teen Wolf [Two] as a kid … I’m Team Jason Bateman!

And Tim Nordwind of OK Go talks about “Shooting the Moon.”

Can you give us a sample of some of the song lyrics?

What can he tell ‘em now
Sorry I let you down
Sorry I wasn’t quite true
But don’t get hung up on it
Just soldier on with it
And good luck shooting the moon

Sounds very apropos. Do you know what scene it’s featured in?

Yes, I do. It’s a montage scene. The song itself is a thoughtful, acoustic song, and the scene they’re using it for is a moment when you see the two kids flirting with each other for the first time.

You mean Bella and Jacob?

Right, yeah.

Have you seen the film?

I did see that scene and some others, but I haven’t seen the completed film. I’m really looking forward to it.

National Post: You have a song on the new Twilight film. Are you a fan?
Matt Bellamy: Well, I liked The Lost Boys in the ’80s. I remember that one had a pretty good soundtrack as well. This sort of film struck me as this generations version of The Lost Boys. It was actually Stephenie Meyer who approached the band quite a few years before the film was name, just as she was becoming known. She came to a concert in Phoenix, in Arizona – I think that’s where she lived, or she lived nearby. She was very friendly, and she told us that she liked the music and that she’d like to use the music in the films. It was a few years later that the filmmakers came to us, and we said sure. I had no idea [the first film] was going to be a film as it was, I thought is was going to be an indie film.

NP: You’ve also put your band forth as being interested in contributing the theme song to a future Bond film.
MB: Yes (laughs).

NP: Are you interested in working on a full film score?
MB: Me personally, yes, I’d be interested in. Not in the Muse style. Picking a film that the music would work. I’ve been offered to do some work on a remake of Clash of the Titans. It’ll be really sort of mental music for a film like that. Totally different to Muse.
