Right now, Swaziland has the highest density of HIV positive people. The citizens of Swaziland die quicker from the dirty water than HIV itself. Movies.com: You rose to fame via Twilight, but you’ve definitely kept yourself busy with other projects, too. Why add this one to your growing resume?

Michael Welch: I was really drawn to the originality and creativity of this project. I think Edgar Wright really created a new genre of filmmaking by mixing a bunch of genres together and really paying tribute to them seriously, but almost creating a whole new world and I feel like that’s what this movie does. If we do our jobs right, the feel of the film should be very quirky and funny, but also very scary and disturbing as well. So ultimately we’re just trying to make a really entertaining movie and I think we’re doing that.

Movies.com: How about your character? Have you seen the Hansel and Gretel episode of Once Upon a Time or have you been following Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters at all?

Welch: I actually didn’t do any Hansel & Gretel-specific research. I didn’t watch any of theHansel & Gretel projects because I really wanted this to feel like just a real guy that you would meet in your everyday life and in a way, separate it from what’s been established about the Hansel character up to this point. The parents are absent from our lives, which is the case in the original Hansel & Gretel so I’ve sort of had to raise my sister and I take care of her and I support her and I love her, but at the same time, I’m also a young man trying to find my own way and kind of getting to the point in my life where maybe I’m getting sick of this whole set up and so that’s kind of given the character somewhat of a sharp biting sense of humor, which is his way of dealing with life.

Honestly, the main thing I watched in preparation as far as figuring out what kind of tone to bring to this character were old episodes of Arrested Development for Jason Bateman’s performance. I felt like he really brought something subtle and wonderful to that role, which is a guy who is trying to be a rock with all of this insanity going on around him and has very little control and the one thing he does have control is his way of dealing with life, which is a very dry sarcastic sense of humor, which is how he gets through his days.

Boyle and director Duane Journey rehearse with Michael Welch (Hansel) on the slab in the witch’s catacombs. “Oh it’s so good to be bad! Agnes is one of the purest villains I’ve ever played,” Boyle revealed. “She is the most sympathetic villain I’ve ever played. I mean you feel for her. She’s had a rough 800 years.” Does Journey concur? “Sympathetic in kind of a vicious way,” the director added. “Lovable, maybe? Just don’t get too close.”

Molly C. Quinn’s Gretel is headstrong and rebellious, and Michael Welch’s Hansel is responsible and strait-laced. “He’s getting sick of his sister a bit, and the way that he’s chosen to deal with her is with a very sharp biting sense of humor, so it’s created a conflicted dynamic between Hansel and Gretel,” explained the “Twilight” actor, who hung out with Quinn before filming to nail the sibling chemistry. He continued, “Molly is carrying this film on her shoulders, and she’s just slaying it.”

We sat with Michael Welch in front of the witch’s “weed forest maze” on set. “I tend to find myself in these supernatural-type films but not actually involved in the supernatural elements of the film,” said the actor who played Mike Newton in four of the “Twilight” films. “That’s happened to me several times now. One case in particular is more obvious than others, but [Duane Journey] did throw me into some action at the end [of 'Black Forest'], so that was really cool and definitely challenging.”

You’ve finished shooting Twilight. What are you going to miss most about filming the saga?
I really enjoyed playing Mike Newton. It was a fun, uncomplicated role that I connected with pretty easily. I’ll miss Mike, but mostly, I’ll miss hanging out and working with the people who I made good friendships with over the years. Making these movies kind of felt like summer camp. We would all get together once a year, far away from home, usually for about two weeks in my case, and create something together. We worked hard, but mostly, we just had a lot of fun.

Twilight has been a part of your life for many years now. What was the last day on set like for you?

I just tried to just take everything in with gratitude and joy. Experiences like that don’t come around very often, so I really wanted to enjoy the moment, share it with my friends, be proud of what we had all accomplished, and be happy to have been a part of something so incredible.

What’s the funniest fan experience you’ve ever had?
The first time a girl cried when she met me was the funniest experience to me. I certainly wasn’t laughing at her vulnerability, just at the situation. I almost felt like a con man, like I had somehow tricked this poor girl into thinking I was a really important member of society, that my very presence should cause her to shake and bring tears to her eyes. The first few months of the Twilight experience were really wild. It was 0-100 overnight. One minute I was just some dude, the next, crowds of people were screaming at me and some girls were suddenly crying at my feet. It’s hard to describe what that’s like.

What was your approach to bringing Hansel into the present day? How does he exist in this world?

“My character is a very modernized take on Hansel. The only similarity I would say is the fact that our parents are absent in our lives. So I’ve had to take responsibility and raise my younger sister and support her and be there for her in every way I can. The thing we’ve all brought to the character is a very dry, sharp, biting sense of humor. A way of dealing with life that is somewhat similar to the Jason Bateman character in “Arrested Development”. He’s just a guy who’s trying to be a rock in this storm of insanity happening around him, and he deals with it through sarcasm.”

So if he’s like Michael in “Arrested Development”, he has to be sort of reticent in accepting the reality of all the action going on. How does that affect him?

“In the beginning he’s unaware of this supernatural world around him. And he’s a very skeptical person by nature, so he wouldn’t be inclined to believe any of it. But then of course he gets dragged into it.”

Tonally, what would you compare this film to?

“It’s so hard to categorize this film. The name I’ve been using more than any other is Edgar Wright. We’re not making a film that’s similar to anything he’s ever done, but this idea of combining genres to create a new world and new feel. And it’s the kind of film where, tonally, you’re not sure if you’ve seen anything like it before. If nothing else, we’re definitely going to have a unique product. ”

Michael Welch will star as Hansel in a modern and quirky take on the classic Grimm fairy tale Hansel & Gretel. The film is called Black Forest: Hansel and Gretel & The 420 Witch. From Variety:

Duane Journey will direct from David Tillman’s script, which concerns a witch living in Pasadena who lures teens into her house with a special blend of marijuana so she can eat them in order to maintain her youth.

“Twilight” thesp Michael Welch and “Castle” star Molly Quinn will play the endangered siblings, while Lara Flynn Boyle (“Men in Black II”) will play the sinister witch.

Production is skedded to start Nov. 12 in Los Angeles.

“420 Witch is not your average fairytale adaptation. It’s a reinvention of the story with a dark edge that I think audiences will love,” said Hudson.

Here is the trailer for the 2009 film Archie’s Final Project which stars Michael Welch in a small role. The film was formerly called My Suicide and we had a chance to speak with Michael about it a while back and here is what he said:

I wanted to ask about My Suicide but I don’t think a lot of people will know what it is about.

I’m very excited about. It’s a really spectacular film and I am very excited to be a part of it. We shot it in January of 2006 and it took about 3 years just to edit it the way they wanted to because it’s essentially a movie from the perspective of a high school filmmaker, so it had to look and feel like he made and edited and shot the film. So there’s a lot of really interesting choices that they made that just took a long time to execute. And it’s actually the set where I met my girlfriend who I am still with five years later, so that’s cool. I’m really glad that My Suicide has a theatrical release because I think it’s a movie that should be seen.

Tell us about your character in the film, Earl.

Earl, like Mike, represents a specific element of the high school experience. Totally different from Mike, but Earl is the guy who is just kind of a crazy party guy, super confident, he’s like the king of his own domain. He throws the house parties, he’s got all these tidbits of wisdom, he thinks he knows everything, but always about either booze or girls. But can tell you anything about those two subjects. He’s one of those guys that is kind of a dominant in a dominant-submissive  relationship.

We reported a while back that Michael Welch (Mike Newton) has landed the role of Aiden in the film Of Light and Darkness, based on the first book of The Vampire’s Daughter series by Shayne Leighton.  Another important character in the story, Sarah, the witch friend of Charlotte, has been cast! Sarah will be played by Cassie Scerbo of the ABC Family TV show Make It or Break It. This won’t be Cassie’s only Twilight connection. Cassie appears in the TV movie Teen Spirit, and her mother is played by Andrea Powell, who we’ll see as Sasha (the creator of the Denali coven) in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. I think the game of Six Degrees of Twilight is getting easier and easier!

It’s no secret that Twi-hards everywhere are anxiously awaiting the much talked-about Breaking Dawn sex scene.

However, there’s at least one person out there who is not excited about Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart onscreen steaminess.

“I have not seen [it],” Michael Welch told us of Robsten’s Breaking Dawn bed scene at the Second Annual Thirst Project Gala in Beverly Hills. “And I’ll be honest, I can’t say I’m looking forward to it, because these are good friends of mine and I don’t really want to see that.”

Meanwhile, something Welch is looking forward to is Stewart in her upcoming fairy-tale flick Snow White and the Huntsman.

“She’s going to make a wonderful Snow White,” he said. “She’s gonna do it in her Kristen-y way that only she can. But I’m really looking forward to it because I’m a big fan of her work.”
