Michael Sheen has been cast as William Masters in the new Showtime drama Masters of Sex.  Lizzy Caplan has also been cast as his on-screen cohort. From TV Line:

Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan are the new Masters of Sex.

Showtime has tapped the pair to headline its drama pilot based on 1960′s human sexuality pioneers William Masters and Virginia Johnson.

The project is based on Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How to Love, Thomas Maier’s book about the 1960s human sexuality pioneers.

 

For starters, in the Best Picture category, two Twilight castmate films were picked – The Help, which stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Victoria” in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), and Midnight In Paris, which stars Michael Sheen (“Aro” – Volturi). Midnight In Paris also received several other nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.

Gil Birmingham’s Rango (he voiced the character “Wounded Bird” for the film), meanwhile, was nominated for Best Animated Feature. That’s about as good as it can get with these animated pictures, so congrats to Gil and the whole Rango team.

Next up, actor Demian Bichir was nominated for Best Actor for his work in Summit Entertainment’s A Better Life – a film which was directed by The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz.

In other Malick news, Michael Sheen revealed toMark Kermode and Simon Mayo [via The Playlist] that he shot a scene for the untitled drama:

“My girlfriend [McAdams] was in a film that Terrence Malick did so I went to visit her on set, and apparently, if you’re an actor and you turn up on a Terrence Malick set, he asks you to be in his film. So I got to be Ben Affleck’s boss for a day.”

Sheen is a nice addition to the already great cast of Affleck, McAdams, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Barry Pepper, and Jessica Chastain.  Neat insight into Malick’s process, too.  The director is known for removing characters in post-productions: Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Sheen, Gary Oldman, Bill Pullman, Lukas Haas, Jason Patric, Viggo Mortensen, and Mickey Rourke all shot scenes for The Thin Red Line that were edited out by the final cut.  Sheen’s role sounds like a very good candidate for the cutting room floor, but we’ll see.

Currently appearing on stage in Hamlet at the Young Vic, Michael has taken time out of his busy schedule to reflect on past Christmas gifts – as part of The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal.

Best known for his performances in Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Frost/Nixon, The Damned United and The Queen, Michael said: “One year when I was 7 or 8, we had Christmas at my grandmother’s house, which I loved. I got an astronaut outfit and never took it off.”

Major Ray Irving, Territorial Social Services Secretary said: “Michael has proved he is a true star by brightening up our Christmas Present Appeal and sharing this special memory.

The Playlist reports that Michael Sheen has been cast in Terrence Malick’s upcoming untitled film, which also stars Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams.

The eagle-eyed folks at The Film Stage have done some digging and revealed that bothAmanda Peet and Michael Sheen headed to Oklahoma to take part in the shoot last year. The former expounded on her experience on the set, which for many who work with the director, is unlike anything they usually experience.

As for Sheen’s revelation, it was a bit more cryptic. Doing press rounds for “Midnight In Paris” during the summer he said, “Well I’m very excited to be able to work with people likeWoody [Allen] — and Terrence Malick as well, this year. Hopefully I’ll be able to carry on working with these people whose work I love to watch.” It’s safe to say he’s talking about the untitled drama, but who knows, maybe he’s the wiseass narrator of “Voyage Of Time.”

INSIDE the cosy auditorium of London’s Young Vic, Michael Sheen will make his hugely-anticipated debut as Hamlet tonight.

Tickets for the three-month run have, unsurprisingly, been among the fastest-selling in the theatre’s 41-year history.

For it seems that everyone wants to see the award-winning Welshman tackling Shakespeare’s anti-hero.

His portrayal comes just a short time after two other high-profile actors – David Tennant and Jude Law – took on the role and it’s also something Sheen has been planning for a while.

When it was first announced that he would be teaming up with director Ian Rickson for his modern day setting of the Bard’s tale, the actor who is renowned for portraying ‘real people’ including Tony Blair, David Frost and Kenneth Williams, warned audiences that he wanted to make it “uncomfortable”.

In a new article from The Times, we get to know “The real Michael Sheen.”

Yes, who is he? Michael Sheen shakes my hand and sits down. We’re in some kind of costume room at the Young Vic, where he’s rehearsing. He wears an old black T-shirt and black jeans. He is 42. For such a top-notch actor, I know almost nothing about him. He’s always been very guarded. I’ve read that he had a terrible split with Beckinsale in 2003, when she went off with Len Wiseman, the director of the film, Underworld, they were both working on. I can hardly imagine anything more crushing. And I’ve heard that, some time before this, he punched the actor Jeremy Northam, on set, when Northam said something rude. Apart from that, all you ever hear about Sheen is that he’s very bright and that he was once extremely good at football.

We sit at a table. Someone has brought me a glass of wine. Sheen doesn’t drink much alcohol. He likes to keep control. He’s Welsh, with a mellifluous voice. He spends most of his time in Hollywood, where he has a small three-bedroom house in an ordinary suburb close to the Hollywood Bowl. Not quite Beverly Hills. He moved there to be closer to his daughter, Lily Mo, now 12. He hasn’t got a house, or even a flat, in London. When he did a play in Wales last Easter – a 72-hour performance of The Passion in Port Talbot – he stayed with his parents. For the time being, he’s living in a flat down the road provided by the theatre. His girlfriend is Canadian actress Rachel McAdams – they met on the set of Midnight in Paris, the new Woody Allen comedy.

PCA released their pre-nominations (users vote on the nominees in each category ahead of time), and each of the three received a bid for individual awards.

Now, keep in mind that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and the cast were all celebrated at this year’s People’s Choice Awards in January, so if the nominations look scant, it’s because of that.

There’s quite a bit more Oscar buzz for several of the films that our Twilight cast has been a part of this year! This list comes to us courtesy of The Guardian.

[Elizabeth Reaser] Young Adult. Director Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air) takes another shot at analysing first world problems with a drama about a recently divorced author (Charlize Theron) who returns to her home town in an attempt to woo a married ex-boyfriend. Theron and writer Diablo Cody (pictured above with Reitman and Juno star Ellen Page) already have an Oscar apiece for Monster and Juno respectively. Reitman, with two directing nominations but no award, must be itching to join them

[Kristen Stewart] Another vaguely delayed project is Walter Salles’s take on the Jack Kerouac classic. Should On the Road make it into cinemas before the voting deadlines end, there could be the jangle of gongs for Salles, or cast members Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley

[Bryce Dallas Howard] The Help. A 1960s period piece on race relations in small-town Mississippi. Director Tate Taylor’s folksy morality tale could play well with the voters who nominated The Color Purple for 11 Oscars back in 1985. Based on a best-selling book by Kathryn Stockett, The Help follows three women – two black maids working in white households and a white college graduate – as they attempt to challenge conventional attitudes to race and place in southern society. Viola Davis, previously nominated for her performance in Doubt (2008), is the one to watch here. But Emma Stone and the ubiquitous Jessica Chastain also feature

[Charlie Bewley] Like Crazy. LA boy Anton Yelchin and London-based girl Felicity Jones weather the dips and highs of a long distance relationship in this low budget romantic drama. So far, so mumblecore. But then there’s the Grand Jury prize it picked up at Sundance, and the bidding war that followed (Paramount won out to the tune of $4 million). And the critical acclaim for Jones’s prize-winning performance. With the right promo, the Academy could well fall for it

[Michael Sheen] Woody Allen’s most profitable film ever hasn’t had critics completely swooning, butMidnight in Paris should still pick up a screenwriting nod, even – whisper it – one for best picture. Owen Wilson plays the wannabe novelist who steps back in time and starts carousing with the likes of Hemingway and Fitzgerald

[Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard] Half oafish comedy, half cancer diary – it’s hard to set the odds on this one. From Brick to Inception, 50/50 lead Joseph Gordon-Levitt has proved himself a friend of Hollywood’s art crowd and the money men both. He’s a good bet for a best actor nomination eventually, but whether this is the film to provide it is debatable. Oscar likes its illnesses serious (Philadelphia, Rain Man, A Beautiful Mind), not stoner (Seth Rogen is on board as Gordon-Levitt’s best mate). Still, at least they renamed the thing – it’s tough to imagine anyone announcing: ‘And the Oscar goes to … I’m With Cancer‘

Rachel McAdams and boyfriend Michael Sheen stop by Whole Foods on Tuesday (June 28) in Toronto, Canada.

Over the weekend, the 32-year-old actress and the 42-year-old actor were spotted getting cozy while riding the subway.

In a new interview with USA Today, Michael Sheen recognizes the variety of roles currently on his resume, and can appreciate each of them for what they are.

He’s had memorable roles in the Twilight series as a royal vampire, a werewolf inUnderworld and as Tony Blair in The Queen and HBO’s The Special Relationship, and that kind of variety keeps him busy as well as entertained.

“The big stars in our industry are partly big stars because they’re recognizable for doing a particular kind of thing, and I’ve never really been that interested in doing that. It’s the difference in parts that I play that I enjoy the most,” explains Sheen, who appears in November’s Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 and the indie comedy Jesus Henry Christlater this year.

“I’m not surprised that people might go, ‘Well, hang on. He’s the guy who plays the politicians.’ Or, ‘No, he’s the guy who does the werewolves and vampires.’ I’m not really looking to become the sort of actor who gets known for doing one thing. I quite like the fact that people don’t know what column to put me in.”

Sheen, who has also attracted younger fans through roles in vampire franchises such as Underworld and Twilight, plays “tight-buttoned” businessman Bill.

Rex Read, film critic of the New York Observer, said: “Beautiful Boy is too bleak and wrenching to recommend unconditionally. You need a strong constitution to watch it soberly, but it is a gripping experience that left me weak at the knees.”

And he was full of praise for Sheen and Bello’s acting.

He said: “In two of the most devastating performances of the year, versatile Michael Sheen and tough, uncompromising Maria Bello are parents in a marriage that is already hanging on a frayed string when their 18-year-old son shocks the nation and becomes front-page fodder in a shark-feeding press frenzy.

“Mr Sheen has a flawless American accent and a bottomless reserve of emotions as the father, while the earthy Ms Bello is his rocky wife coming apart at the seams.”

Maria Bello is one of the most underrated actors of her generation. Or rather, I should say she was one of the most underrated since there is simply no way for anyone to continue denying her talents now that “Beautiful Boy” is leaving movie theaters littered with tear-stained tissues.

As a mother dealing with the dual depression of losing a child and losing a child who took his own life after shooting up his school, Maria brilliantly vacillates between grief and anger — at herself, her son, her husband — throughout the triumphant performance.

It’s one more amazing woman on her resume. A CV that’s about to get even more jam-packed with the September premiere of “Prime Suspect,” a small screen reboot of the BBC series that casts Maria as the daring detective Dame Helen Mirren originated in 1991. Big shoes, no doubt — but ones Maria can not wait to walk 100 episodes in.

PopWrap: First let me say that I loved “Beautiful Boy.” It’s so good.
Maria Bello: I agree with you [laughs]. I think Shawn Ku [director] did an amazing job with a wonderful script. As did the genius Michael Sheen. I’m just so lucky to be a part of it. I’m not really “promoter girl” – I usually hate doing press, but this is a movie I can’t stop talking about!

PW: Given the shoestring budget and fast-paced shoot, it strikes me as a film that was very much a passion project for everyone involved.
Maria: It was. For all of us. It felt like Michael and I were paying them to let us do the movie [laughs]. I mean, we never knew if anyone would see it, but we were just so connected to the material. It was wonderful that we got to play together. We did and just had a great experience. It was fun exploring that curiosity and wonderment.

PW: Was Kate a character that stuck with you after filming wrapped?
Maria: I was pretty exhausted when I went home at nights, but I’m also a mother to a 10-year-old, so I had to suck it up, make dinner, do homework – the whole thing. It makes it easier to let my job go at the end of the day because, truthfully, I don’t have a choice.

PW: Did being a mother in real life influence your choice to tell this story?

Maria: I think being a parent for sure changes you. No one could understand just how much it changes you if you don’t have a child. It’s deepened me as a person and an actor and given me a compassion for people that I never had before. For parents in general. It’s painful to even imagine your child doing that.

PW: Kate is an amazing character in a long line of amazing characters you’ve played — are there any you’d like to revisit and tell Chapter Two of their story?
Maria: Yes! I’d love to do a sequel to “The Cooler” with Bill Macy. See where we drove off to at the end. Wouldn’t that be cool? You actually made me think of it for the first time.

PW: I’m also very excited for your new show, “Prime Suspect.”
Maria: Oh man, let me tell you — that’s a good character. I haven’t been excited like this for a project in a really long time. Such an incredibly strong, compelling, funny, interesting character and I’m just so fortunate to play her. Not only that, but to be – as Helen Mirren was to me – a role model in so many ways for women and girls is a gift.

PW: You’ve pretty much ticked all the boxes — drama, comedy, action. I mean, it looks like you kick some serious ass in the “Abduction” trailer!
Maria: [laughs] How’d you see that? Is it out?

PW: Yes! And it doesn’t look like director John Singleton skimps on the action one bit.
Maria: No he doesn’t! And working with him was one of the big reasons I did the film. John Singleton is such a brilliant guy and a friend. But Taylor [Lautner] did a really good job! He’s a really wonderfully committed actor. In addition to being a lovely person – which he doesn’t need to be since he’s so gigantically famous. Has women following him everywhere. But he’s just so grounded.

Maria Bello starred in The Yellow Handkerchief with Kristen Stewart a few years back. Now she has two new films coming out with two other Twilight actors. She stars as Michael Sheen’s wife in Beautiful Boy and as Taylor Lautner’s mother in Abduction. She talked to Collider about both actors recently.

About working on Abduction, and with Taylor Lautner:

What was it about Abduction that appealed to you, and who do you play in the film?

BELLO: I love John Singleton. He’s a wonderful director and a friend, and we’ve always wanted to work together. I loved it. I got to be this bad-ass and have this amazing fight scene, and work with Taylor [Lautner] and Jason Isaacs. We had a blast.

Regarding Beautiful Boy, and working with Michael Sheen:

What was it like to collaborate with Michael Sheen? Did you spend any time figuring out the relationship between your characters?BELLO: Yeah, we talked about it before we started filming. We got to know each other and talked about our lives and who these characters were, but we never officially rehearsed. We just got to the set and decided to play. There are some people you just automatically have a connection with and it’s just immediate. He and I had that.

Collider has a new exclusive interview with Michael Sheen where he talks about Beautiful Boy, his upcoming Hamlet project, and gave some interesting details about playing Aro in The Twilight Saga films.

Your character in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn is seen as the villain, but he’s really much more complicated, sinister and self-serving than that. How do you perceive that character?

SHEEN: Well, what I love about that character is that I think he’s totally insane. Immortality – living forever – has driven him completely insane, or certainly into an area of sanity that is not really accessible to most people, and yet, part of his insanity is that he thinks that he’s a sentimental, little old lady. He thinks he’s this cuddly grandmother, somehow. In a way, he keeps himself interested in life and people around him by playing this weird game with himself where he role plays and it amuses him to think of himself as being someone who just enjoys watching young people enjoying themselves. He’s like, “Oh, it’s so lovely. I cry at romantic films.” There’s that kind of persona that he has, when actually he just wants to kill people and eat them. It’s this weird game that he plays. So, I love that. There are a lot of places to explore with that. Underneath it is this insane animal, but on the surface is this very sophisticated, cultured, sentimental character. I just think he’s great. I love it!

Do you feel like he always has a personal agenda and that he doesn’t do anything unless it’s self-serving?

SHEEN: Yeah. He’s incredibly intelligent. The viewpoint that he has is from someone who has been alive for centuries upon centuries, and so he sees things in a very different way. He’s a great chess player, in that respect. He’s lots of moves ahead of everyone. It’s all a game that he plays and enjoys. He’s a fascinating character.
