For starters, in the Best Picture category, two Twilight castmate films were picked – The Help, which stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Victoria” in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), and Midnight In Paris, which stars Michael Sheen (“Aro” – Volturi). Midnight In Paris also received several other nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.

Gil Birmingham’s Rango (he voiced the character “Wounded Bird” for the film), meanwhile, was nominated for Best Animated Feature. That’s about as good as it can get with these animated pictures, so congrats to Gil and the whole Rango team.

Next up, actor Demian Bichir was nominated for Best Actor for his work in Summit Entertainment’s A Better Life – a film which was directed by The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz.

Twilightish: How does it feel to see the end of the Twilight Saga? Are you happy to move on? Or do you wish for more movies?

Gil: The ending is bittersweet. It’s been a long, wild journey that consumed our lives for several years. Like many of the cast, I’m ready to move on to something new. But it’s sad at the same time. It’s like laving your family and a part of your life behind.

Twilightish: As Papa Black, what will you miss the most about your wolf family?

Gil: The laughs and the friendships. When we got onto the set, there was an instant bonding with the wolves that lasted through all the films.

Twilightish: How important do you think it was to showcase Native American culture in such a rich and positive way?

Gil: Twilight helped bring contemporary Native American culture into the mainstream, which is so important. Movies often only feature Natives in historical context, people still think we wear leather and feathers in our daily lives. It was great to be a part of a film that portrayed Native Americas as we really are. Okay, so we don’t all turn into werewolves. Maybe that’s a stretch.

Twilightish: How much of yourself did you put into the character of Billy Black?

Gil: Every actor brings a piece of himself into each character he plays. Billy Black has parts of me, but I’m not Billy Black.

Twilightish: And likewise, have any of Billy’s attributes crept into your real life?

Gil: I don’t know that the character Billy has invaded my real life, although I am noticing that I now get very hairy around a full moon….

The work of a writer and filmmaker who grew up in Lake County will make its debut at the Soper-Reese Community Theatre this month.

Timothy Ramos’ film “California Indian” will be shown at the Soper-Reese on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are on sale now through www.soperreesetheatre.com.

Ramos – the film’s writer, producer and director, as well as a member of the acting cast – was raised on the Big Valley Rancheria outside of Lakeport, and is one of only a handful of first generation Native American directors working in the industry today.

In “California Indian,” Nick Thomas, a Pomo Indian and a successful Los Angeles radio host, is forced back to the reservation to help his brother Chi (Gil Birmingham), and tribal leader Rich Knight (Gary Farmer) lead the Tule Lake Rancheria out of danger from a seedy casino investor (Mark Boone Jr.), ultimately claiming sovereignty of their Native American rights, according to the film’s synopsis.

The California Indian Web site, www.californiaindian.com, explains, “The struggles inherent on reservations today are depicted in this day-in-the-life drama based on true characters and events. The film dispels current stereotypes and myths about modern Native American culture while showcasing the depths of the heritage that thrives today.”

The film – which also marks Ramos’ directorial debut – was shot on location in Lake County, especially in and around Lakeport.

The film’s Web site said Pomo tribal members, who had no prior acting experience, were cast in many of the roles in the film, which allowed for greater authenticity of the portrayal of the tribe.

So with Father’s Day coming up this weekend, I’m paying tribute to the dads from the series.

But who is the best “Twilight” dad? (Besides all of them?) Allow me to lay out the facts.

Charlie Swan, Carlisle Cullen, Billy Black and (future screen daddy) Edward Cullen are the men under the microscope. While everyone has their own ideas on what makes the best father, I’ve done some in-depth research (thanks, Ask Jeeves!) and these are the qualities most will agree on:

They should be of high integrity, but never high on other things. They should be able to provide for their kids, meaning they need some cash money – Benjamins, if you will. And a father needs to be responsible, offer guidance, and spend quality time with children. These are proven techniques that keep daughters (and sons) off the stripper pole.

The Buzz: The trailer made this look like an insane ride, no pun intended. Heard is a hottie and the movie doesn’t claim to be anything but fun. Jesus, take the wheel.

Starring: Johnny Depp, Abigail Breslin, Isla Fisher
What It’s About: Depp voices a chameleon with an identity crisis who ends up the sheriff of an Old West town.
The Buzz: Depp’s character is supposedly based on gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who he played in ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.’ Can turning Thompson into a lizard make a good kids movie? We can’t stop here. This is lizard country!

‘Red Riding Hood’ [Billy Burke, directed by Catherine Hardwicke]
Release Date: Mar. 11
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez, Julie Christie, Gary Oldman, Lukas Haas
What It’s About: A dark re-imagining of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale; here, a young girl falls for a young woodcutter who is deadly when the moon becomes full.
The Buzz: It’s directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who did the first ‘Twilight’ and the harrowing coming-of-age film ‘Thirteen.’ Plus, a horror take on a fairy tale? What big ambitions you have, grandma!

‘Water for Elephants’

The Buzz: ‘Kick-Ass’ director Matthew Vaughn is the secret weapon of this film; by setting ‘First Class’ in a James Bond-inspired 1960s, Vaughn’s plans to make the first “silver age” comic book movie might give this franchise a burst of fresh, creative energy.

‘Larry Crowne’ [Rami Malek]

‘Abduction’

What It’s About: ‘Twilight’ hunk Taylor Lautner stars as a teen who sets out to discover the truth about himself after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.
The Buzz: This will be Lautner’s first major lead role away from the ‘Twilight’ series, and it’ll be one that will test just how ready he is (and we are) for him to become Hollywood’s next big action star.

‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part I’
Release Date: Nov. 18
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner
What It’s About: Love is in the air for our favorite couple, as Bella and Edward move one step closer to marriage and — spoilers! — babies.
The Buzz: Oscar-winning director Bill Condon is at the helm, which could add some high-brow prestige to this hugely successful blockbuster franchise.

Would you like to tell us more about your new movie with Chaske? It is called Shouting Secrets, right?

Yes, Shouting Secrets is a story of a family dealing with the history of the interactions between the different members. When one member tells the stories of the family in a book and then that book becomes a best seller. The writer of the book separates from the family and starts living in the big city, enjoying the big life being a celebrity. He is not revisited his origins for many years until his mother befalls sick and he is forced to come back and deal with all the tension, resentments and the love that still really exists between all the different family members and how they have come to a resolution with that.

It was hard to play that character while Chaske played another, considering your history with Twilight and your dynamic? Or you had chemistry so it was easier for you to fight?

Yes, we have a chemistry because we have done 5 movies together already, it’s not just Twilight. And we have great trust between us to be able to access that emotional body that was necessary for these characters. It’s like two people kind of jumping off a cliff together and trusting each other and what would come from that. So, it was really a wonderful experience to deal at safe with another actor.
