Indie distributor Cross Country Entertainment has acquired the Canadian rights to Paul Johansson’s Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, the independently financed adaptation of the Ayn Rand novel.

Vancouver-based Cross Country, which is co-run by Zanne Devine of Pacific Northwest Pictures and Michael Taylor of Multiple Media Entertainment, grabbed all rights to the $10 million picture, which was independently released stateside in April 2011.

News of the Canadian distribution deal emerged Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The U.S. release was done with a low marketing budget as the producers targeted tea partiers.

Atlas Shrugged: Part 1 stars Taylor Schilling (Mercy), Grant Bowler, Matthew Marsden and Edi Gathegi. Harmon Kaslow and John Aglialoro co-produced the movie based on a screenplay by Brian Patrick O’Toole and Aglialoro.

Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that producers are filling the Dean of Medicine post vacated by Lisa Edelstein’s Cuddy with a face familiar to fans of the Fox hit as opposed to bringing in a new cast member.

Lucas Till, most recently seen as “Havok” in the hugely popular X-Men: First Class, has joined the cast for Chan-wook Park’s upcoming thriller Stoker. Although only 20, Till already has an impressive heap of credits, and working with Park is another feather in his cap.

Stoker isn’t the only genre project Till is involved with. He’s a partner in the production company Grindfist, which is producing a horror film called Vacation 8, in which he stars. Jason Trost is directing, and Till’s co-stars include James Remar and Edi Gathegi.

In real life, odd couples can be tiresome with their bickering and bellyaching, but in the theater they’re usually a source of comic bliss. And there’s a memorable one on display right now at the Geffen Playhouse, where Tracy Letts’ absorbing comedy “Superior Donuts” opened Wednesday under the direction of Randall Arney.

Arthur Przybyszewski (Gary Cole) is the proprietor of a rundown doughnut shop in a part of Chicago that went downhill years ago and never came back. An old hippie with a graying ponytail, few words and defeated eyes, he looks as beaten down as the neighborhood where his store has just been broken into.

Franco Wicks (Edi Gathegi), a 21-year-old African American go-getter who’s been writing the Great American Novel, bangs on the shop door inquiring about a job. The lights are out and Arthur, a little high from smoking a joint and more than a little down from the difficult memories he’s been sifting through, tells him he’s closed. Franco, however, won’t take no for an answer. His energy and optimism are self-charging, and he impresses Arthur as a bright kid who deserves a break, not realizing that it’s Franco who’s offering him the lifeline.

The play is like a human chemistry experiment that sets out to discover what will happen when a sullen, disappointed baby boomer opens himself up to a young dreamer who, despite his hardships (and a gambling debt that won’t go away), feels certain that the best is yet to come.

Mired in guilt over his Polish immigrant father, who never forgave him for evading the Vietnam War draft, Arthur has carried on the family business with an emotional numbness that surely hastened the demise of his marriage. His parents and ex-wife all dead, his daughter estranged from him, he finds himself unable to move forward, and his appearance is like a billboard announcing to all the world that he’s stuck.

“I hate to break it to you, but the Grateful Dead ain’t gonna hire a new guitar player,” Franco teases him, trying to get his boss to spruce up and ask the female cop (Mary Beth Fisher) who’s clearly interested in him out on a date.

The only thing that seems to rouse Arthur from his torpor is the genuine enthusiasm he has for Franco’s manuscript. But impressed as he is by the storytelling, he can’t get himself to believe in happy endings. Experience has taught him that “life isn’t just what you wish for.” Idealism derailed his existence and he’d rather not see the same thing happen to Franco.

“Superior Donuts” struck me as a highly entertaining and unusually well-written sitcom when I first encountered the work on Broadway in 2009. The drama is formulaic, but the principal characters are deftly drawn, the wit is sharp and observant and there are enough surprise touches to keep you from getting too far ahead of the story. Compared with Letts’ epic blockbuster “August: Osage County,” one of the most decorated plays in recent history, this is a breezier work intended to please crowds. But it’s not frivolous. A rich vein of feeling runs through the drama, and though the second half gets patchy as a subplot involving an angry bookie (Paul Dillon) and his goon (Matt McTighe) takes up more space, our emotional interest in Arthur and Franco never flags.

Beautiful Boy [Michael Sheen]

A shooting on a college campus leaves 17 people dead, including the killer, whose parents grieve, blame and are blamed. An unwavering view into an almost unimaginable agony, with indelible performances by Maria Bello and Michael Sheen as the mother and father. 6/3 (Limited)

X-Men: First Class [Edi Gathegi]

First class? This Marvel prequel — make that pre-prequel, since it antedates most of Wolverine — may suffer from too much class. Genteel Scottish heartthrob James McAvoy plays the young Professor X, and Teutonic-Irish demon lover Michael Fassbender is the man who will become Magneto. Next, expect the pre-pre-prequel, in which the two antagonists are brilliant infants dueling each other from adjacent speeding prams. 6/3

A Better Life [directed by Chris Weitz]

New Moon director Chris Weitz gets serious with a moving drama about the plight of an illegal immigrant (Demián Bichir of Weeds) in Los Angeles who works as a gardener but fosters bigger ambitions for his contemptuous teenage son (José Julián). After the truck Carlos needs to make a living is stolen, father and son unite to search for it. 6/24

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 [Jamie Campbell Bower]

As the movie series comes to an end, prepare for revelations about those last horcruxes, some epic sacrifices and Harry’s finally going nose-to-not-nose with the Dark Lord. Saying goodbye will be brutal. 7/15

After appearing in two Twilight movies, Gathegi says that stepping into a X-Men movie is “a lot of pressure,” since the first Twilight movie “wasn’t really a massive movie before it was released” and First Class is technically “the fifth installment of the X-Men franchise.” Gathegi admitted that there’s a difference between the two fanbases.

I would say that Twilight fans are more forgiving. They’re more opinionated in the beginning, but if things don’t go entirely according to their imagination — which they never will — they’ll be upset but then they’ll forgive that and come back with so much love. I don’t know what it is about those fans. But the X-Men fans aren’t so forgiving! By the same token, you can’t satisfy everybody. We’re making this for the fans and I don’t necessarily think it’ll appeal to the fanatics, because we’ve drawn from many different elements of the comics to make this work as a movie, because it is a movie and not a 20-page comic book. So it’s going to be different.

The cast of director  Matthew Vaugh’s upcoming X-Men prequel, X-Men: First Class is filled with established actors, Oscar nominees, and up-and-coming stars, but only Edi Gathegi has experience being involved a franchise filled with obsessive fans, having appeared as the vampire Laurent in the first two Twilight movies.

Gathegi plays Darwin in First Class, a relatively new character, even in the comic books — Darwin first appeared in the February 2006 issue of X-Men: Deadly Genesis #2. Darwin’s power is reactive adaptation, which means that “whatever environment he’s in, in order to survive he will mutate,” Gathegi explained in an interview with IGN. Gathegi added that Darwin is also “the coolest one.”

Speaking of up and coming young black actors… Edi Gathegi seems to be gradually making a name for himself in Hollywood, building a resume, both in film and TV – from Twilight to X-Men: First Class on the big screen, and bit parts on several TV shows, to, now, one of 3 lead roles in a new USA Network pilot (and hopefully an eventual series) titled Wild Card.

The program will be set in Las Vegas, and will center on two lawyers who “handle the type of problems that happen after the sun goes down and need to be solved before the sun the comes up” and their “smart, ambitious and resourceful investigator, who knows everyone in town.”

Gathegi will play the investigator; Ben Lawson plays one of the lawyers; no word on who will be the other, although it’s noted that it’s a woman.

Wild Card is currently in production, for what will likely be a fall debut. I haven’t seen any related media – stills, video clips, etc.

Blackfilm has a new exclusive interview with Edi Gathegi, who will be appearing as mutant Darwin in the upcoming film X-Men: First Class. But of course, we know him as Laurent in Twilight and New Moon! And it looks like we might see him on our TVs in the near future, as well!

How’s life been for you as an actor since you did the first two ‘Twilight’ films? With your character killed off, were you able to get more roles?
EG: I didn’t work for like a year and a half after ‘Twilight’. So, in many ways it’s not really rational because I’m an actor through and through. I went and did regional theater to fulfill me because inhabiting a character and performing is why I do it, but I definitely didn’t work for a year and a half and I questioned whether or not I was going to have the opportunity to do it at that level ever again. I went through a roller coaster of emotions after my character didn’t come back from the second ‘Twilight’ film, but I think that everything happens for a reason. It’s just great to be a part of something else, something that in many ways is a childhood fantasy. I feel very fortunate. I feel very blessed.

I read that you’re doing a pilot for a USA series called ‘Wild Card’. What’s the show about and what’s your character’s role?
EG: The show takes place in Vegas and the basic concept is what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but only if you have a good lawyer. People go to Vegas and they misbehave and maybe they get thrown in jail when the sun goes down at nighttime. Our job is to get them out of jail before the sun comes up. So, it’s a dramedy. It’s an hour procedural where two lawyers and an investigator are out trying to help out these heathens. I play the investigator.

“I’ll tell you a story – I was an ‘X-Men’ fan growing up. I woke up every Saturday morning and I was glued to the TV when the ‘X-Men’ cartoon was on. And when the movie came out I loved it. It was the best superhero reimagining that I’d ever seen. I loved the ‘X-Men’ series. But Wolverine was the guy I loved when I was a kid. For some reason – the adamantium, the swagger, it was all about Wolverine. My character’s relatively new – he was created maybe five years ago – and if my character were around when I was a kid, he’d definitely be my favourite character. I tell you what the powers are and you go, ‘Wait a minute, that’s awesome.’ He wasn’t around when I was a kid, but if he were it’d be all about Darwin.”

Edi gave a great interview where he talks about his upbringing and how he got into acting. He also ‘fesses up that he pre-judged Twilight as ‘crap’ and then read the book and loved it.

LADYBRILLEmag.com: Speaking of that, let’s get into how you got the role in Twilight and what it felt like?
Edi: I remember having a conversation with a friend of mine who was telling me about her roommate who was an internet sensation and how all his fans wanted him to get into this vampire book series that was amazing . . .Fast forward to me auditioning for Twilight not knowing what it was about. I walk into the room and my lines were “the humans were tracking us and . . . “I thought to myself, “if I am saying “the humans” it is safe to say I am not human and it is safe to say I am not interested because this is crap! I don’t like those kind of movies.” (Laughs) I auditioned anyways and Catherine was a blast in the room and she had such wonderful energy. She was so excited, she made me so excited about the role. I left and didn’t really think about it twice after I left the room.

Then I got a call from my agent saying I was the number 1 choice for that role and that it was based on a book, and three books. I thought, instantly, I was going to be a part of something that could be a trilogy. That is a great thing for an actor to be attached to three movies because it means job security. So, I got the job and then I read the book and I loved it! I thought, “Oh. I prejudged. This kind of book can be good. It is more of a romance just set in a world where vampires exist and I am kind of digging this.” So, I went off and did the first film.

Q: I’m not too familiar with Darwin. Can you give me a rundown of who this Darwin is?

A: Darwin, a mutant, is a relatively new addition to the X-Men comic world. Nicknamed after Charles Darwin – father of the theory of evolution – Darwin adapts to harsh environments based on an instinctual need to survive. His ability is called reactive adaptation. I want that power in real life – I’m not gonna lie.

Q: Will Darwin transform into his pale form?

A: Not only will Darwin transform into his pale form, but he will also transform into his obese form, his female form and even his bovine form. Totally messing with you. You just have to wait to see what transformations occur. No spoilers here buddy. Not today. Not evah. No way.

Q: In the comics, Darwin was discovered by Moira MacTaggert. Is this the same in X-Men: First Class?

A: In our film Darwin is discovered by the mutant recruiters (I totally made up that term). I won’t tell you who’s on that recruiting team – it’s better to be surprised.

Q: What’s it like being a part of two enormous franchises – Twilight and now X-Men? Do you feel pressure from fans?

A: I’ve learned that you can’t please everyone. And everyone has an opinion. Not everyone will like what you do and by that same token not everyone will hate it either. So the best thing I can do for my general overall happiness, the work, and the simple enjoyment of the process is to attack the characters the best I can – taking into consideration the source material. When I can do that then it’s much easier to handle the negative feedback. So to that end I don’t really feel pressure from fans. I feel pressure from myself to do my best. I thank my lucky stars everyday that I am even in a position where I am answering questions like this. Two franchises? Pinch me, am I dreaming? Don’t pinch me I don’t wanna wake up.

Twilight star Edi Gathegi (Laurent) has been busy since leaving the Saga behind. He has a role in the upcoming films X-Men: First Class and Atlas Shrugged. He also took part in the Valentine’s Day theatrical event Hearts Aflame. And now he has scored the lead role opposite actor Gary Cole in the play Superior Donuts, on stage at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles later this year.

Gary Cole and Edi Gathegi lead the cast of the West Coast premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts’ play Superior Donuts, to run May 31-July 10 at the Geffen Playhouse. The production, to be directed by Randall Arney, will open officially on June 8. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

The play concerns Arthur Przybyszewski, the proprietor of Superior Donuts, a sweets shop in Chicago that has been a community hub for decades, and Franco Wicks, a young fast-talking dreamer, whom he hires.

Jackson Rathbone and Edi Gathegi will both be taking part in Hearts Aflame, a Valentine’s Day theatrical event at WordTheater in Los Angeles. From the Examiner:
