David Slade has kept busy since directing the third installment of The Twilight Saga, with TV projects (Breaking Bad, Awake), and the possibility of a Daredevil being mentioned in the news somewhat regularly. Slade has finally signed on to another feature film called Villain.  From Collider:

Slade will direct the psychological thriller Villain for Wayfare Entertainment.  The story centers on “two brothers as they confront their dark past in an unforgiving wilderness.”  Production is set to take place in Alaska and producers are currently casting the two leads.  Hit the jump for more on the project and Slade’s upcoming directorial projects, as well as the full press release regarding Villain.

Feature director David Slade (Eclipse) is set to direct the pilot for Hannibal, NBC’s 13-episode series from Gaumont International Television, written and executive produced by Bryan Fuller and executive produced by Martha DeLaurentiis. The project is described as a contemporary thriller featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon – FBI agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter — who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship. This marks Slade’s return to NBC where he directed the pilot for freshman drama Awake last season. He most recently helmed the Lifetime drama pilot American Housewife starring Melanie Griffith.

 

Eclipse director David Slade has been announced as the director of Coward, an adaptation of the graphic novel Criminal.

The first in a potential franchise, with a sequel already being planned, Slade will direct “Coward,” the first in Ed Brubaker‘s award winning “Criminal” series that centers on Leo, a professional pickpocket, legendary heist-planner and thief. However, just like Driver, he doesn’t use guns, only does jobs on his terms but of course, one job in particular finds those rules going out the window. And it’s not just us making the comparison, as Brubaker himself saysRyan Gosling would have been ideal for the movie were it not for a certain Nicolas Winding Refn film.

When Darron Aronofsky dropped out of the director’s chair for The Wolverine, various media outlets threw David Slade‘s name into the mix, but now it seems that producers are considering him as well. From The Playlist:

In the midst of Deadline’s report about Hugh Jackman being offered “Snow White and the Huntsman,” they briefly mention that Fox is now beginning to look at directors and that David Slade and Duncan Jones are just a couple of early names being considered.

Slade is no surprise, really. He recently admitted he pretty much had the gig until Darren Aronofsky swooped in and took it for himself. However, in the wake of Aronofsky’s departure he hit Twitter to say that no discussions had taken place between himself and Fox, but obviously, that could change. Before Aronofsky bounced, Slade signed on to direct another comic franchise for the studio, a reboot of “Daredevil,” but we’d guess that “The Wolverine” is probably the priority project between the two.

Director David Slade has taken to the Twitter machine to talk about Daredevil and Wolverine.  Slade recently became attached to direct Daredevil, but Darren Aronofsky’s sudden departure  from The Wolverine has led to speculation that Slade could take the helm since he was one of the lead contenders for the gig.  Slade has now clarified not only his plans for Daredevil but also his current status in regards to The Wolverine.  Speaking about Daredevil, Slade tweeted:

So without breaking confidentiality, yes Daredevil, we have a great outline for a very strong character driven take on Mr Matt Murdock. It will bare no relation to the previous Daredevil movie in any way. We are at early planning stages and have not yet discussed any cast.

Variety is reporting that David Slade has been picked to direct the next Daredevil picture.

David Slade has been tapped to put Daredevil back on the bigscreen for 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment.

Fox introduced the Marvel Comics superhero at megaplexes in 2003, in an actioner that starred Ben Affleck as the blind lawyer-turned-vigilante who wears a red suit and wields a billyclub. Reviews were mixed at best.

Though the film wound up spinning off “Elektra” with Jennifer Garner, studio had hoped “Daredevil” would earn more than its $103 million domestic take and launch a series of sequels. Fox has been looking to redevelop the character since, but people close to the project say it’s not a reboot per se — more a continuation of the “Daredevil” saga. Studio has yet to hire a scribe, but writer would work closely with Slade.

Slade has been considering several comicbook properties, including Fox’s “Wolverine,” but that gig wound up going to Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”).

Slade most recently directed “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” which earned $698 million at the worldwide box office. His credits also include Sony’s “30 Days of Night” and Lionsgate’s “Hard Candy.”

Like a storm-tossed ship navigating high waves, Dracula-associated horror thriller The Last Voyage of the Demeter has had a rough ride through development. Directors have come and gone, and it’s still looking for a star, but David Slade is now the man at the helm.

Given that the script, originally written by Bragi Schut, follows the ill-fated voyage of the ship that brought Dracula from to England in Bram Stoker’s book, Slade seems like a solid choice after making brutal vampire tale 30 Days of Night. And even though his last effort saw him wrangling vamps of a slightly more emo/sparkling nature in Twilight: Eclipse, we’d like to see what his keen visual eye would do for a film with a better script. The story is essentiallyAlien at sea, with the crew slaughtered one by one by a mysterious passenger. Well, mysterious if you’ve never read the book, that is.

Eclipse director David Slade may be directing a pilot for NBC called REM. While he’s directed numerous movies and music videos, television is a new addition to Slade’s directing resumé. From Variety:

David Slade, who helmed “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” is in talks to direct the NBC pilot “REM.”"REM” is the brainchild of Kyle Killen, whose Fox series “Lone Star” — a critical hit but ratings disaster — drew the first cancellation of the TV season. Pilot centers on a police detective living in two realities and who must solve cases using clues from each of his lives.

David Slade took to Facebook recently and revealed his next project now that the Eclipse storm is dying.

Other rumours mythbusted: I am not directing a remake of “Christine”, nor am I directing “The Shadow”.

I can confirm (pretty much) that before starting on my next (secret right now) film I will be guest directing an episode of “Breaking Bad”.

He also joked a little about his involvement in Twilight and suggestions he made for new Twilight films.

How do you know Twi isn’t my cup of tea? I actually got completely lost in the historical backstories of Eclipse…

…and suggested directing an R Rated film based on “The Short 2nd Life Of Bree Tanner” to Stephenie Meyer.

Other behind scenes stories: Early alt title for Eclipse: “Twilight 3, Twi-Hard or Die Twi-ing” was rejected by the studio more than once.

Here is an excerpt from the interview :

Eclipse was a lot broader . . . but it’s still a character-based drama. That’s what I really enjoyed about it,” he says. “I think it’s also a much more adult film than (the previous two), because the characters are becoming more mature. There’s loads of fun stuff to play with, and because we treated it as a drama, the transformation (of character) takes place.”

“It was a 50-day shoot, with many 16-hour days,” he says.

To make things even more challenging, the cast was losing itself in its own Twilight cosmos. All actors have to surrender to their roles and inhabit their characters to some degree for the duration of production, so Slade was pleased his cast was taking the whole project seriously and sincerely.

Everyone was committed, he says.

“Kristen, in particular, was very tough on herself.”

Slade says because Stewart didn’t pull from her own life and her own person to play Bella Swan, she found it personally demanding to find Bella’s truth.

“She would say, ‘I don’t know who Bella is to me.’ In a lot of ways, I think she felt Bella was the antithesis to her, which presented a lot of challenges for Kristen. . . . She would beat herself up about it, because she wants to be there. She never wants to leave a scene undone.

“There were tears,” says Slade.

“But you move on and you keep going. . . . Even in rehearsals with Rob (Pattinson), there was a similar spiralling that would happen.”

Actors are people. They get insecure, and any human being facing the weight of expectation surrounding Twilight would have to buckle, if only a little. To offset as much of the thespian obsessing as possible, Slade says he’s learned the value of preparation.

Eclipse director David Slade explains how he would have handled the racier scenes of Breaking Dawn if he were directing it.

“I would have probably gone after it,” Slade says of racier scenes in the final installment of the Twilight franchise. “I’m kind of fairly tenacious that way.

“I’d have probably done a special red band version if it were up to me,” he laughed. “But no, poor ole Bill Condon has that task.”

I didn’t do one for my second film [30 Days of Night] either.”

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hits DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 4. After watching the special features, we had a few burning questions, which director David Slade (pictured, with Kristen Stewart) happily fielded.

Listening to Stephenie and Wyck’s commentary, you hear a lot of the discussions that went on on-set, like debating how Jacob should kiss Bella both times, and you realize what a collaborative experience making a Twilight film must be. Is that helpful or more challenging as a director? “If you’re in sync with everybody, the collaboration is second nature. What you’re doing is looking for the best ideas and utilizing them. Certainly there is a lot of collaboration, but there is also a lot of clarity that has to be had in the vision that you have for the film when you come in as the director. Without that, there’s no bullseye to be aiming for,” he says. “There’s all kinds of things that we can discuss, but at the end of the day, I’m the guy that has to go off and get the shot… Film is always a fight because you’re the person, as the director, with a clear picture in your head of what you think is really exciting, and you’re just trying to convince a bunch of other people to buy into that. That’s always gonna be a tough ride, particularly when there’s two very successful films that have gone beforehand. There’s a tendency to think safely. ‘We have something that works. Why would we change this or that?’ Anything that was changed, they took lots of discussion. But there was nothing that was like everybody disagrees. There were only discussions to get to a point where everybody was comfortable.” One example: The shattering vampires in Eclipse. “I was really fascinated with the pathology of the creatures. There’s one thing to write something from an emotional place when she imagined it, a dream of a man who’s made of diamonds, which is now the mythology and the lore that goes into how she describes Edward Cullen. But then to me, well, that’s esoteric. I have to make something really tangible. So let’s get pathological, let’s figure out why do they shine, and therefore what are they made of, and therefore why do they break?,” Slade says. “There was a certain balance that had to be struck between a really great visual image and also what would work for Stephenie. One of the things I remember was the size of the pieces. You couldn’t have biscuit-size pieces around because people might find them. Which is fair enough. We would have to then adapt our effects work to make sure there were no biscuit-size pieces. There were big chunks that broke off that could all be found and burned, because in the books, of course they continue to live. They’re not inanimate, those little pieces will crawl around, which we took cinematic license not to do.”

“We were trying to get the film to a manageable length, to flow really well, and it was like hitting a speed bump. You just felt it every time you hit these scenes,” he explained.

The scene that made it to the DVD’s special features is one that “closed the argument.” Edward is sitting outside Bella’s house and is being “kind of a jerk, making certain demands which Edward is like to do throughout all of these films,” and Bella finally gets fed up with him. She storms off to her room, locking her window, effectively telling Edward that he is not welcome in her boudoir that evening. But after a moment’s hesitation, she unlocks and opens the window.

All this dvd release news is making me so excited to watch the movie AGAIN !!

Prepare yourselves. This is our (only slightly) advanced review of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse DVD. Unfortunately, I don’t have a BluRay player, so I am reviewing the Two-Disc Special Edition. I’m not a great reviewer, and when it comes to The Twilight Saga, I have a blind love for everything pertaining to it, so if something is just horrible on this disc, I don’t know what it is. With that said, let’s get started.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Film Commentary

Rob and Kristen have some inside jokes in here that I didn’t get. Also, there was a bit of mumbling (mostly on Rob’s part), so I didn’t catch everything.  But, regardless, this commentary is very amusing to listen to. Things I loved about it were also what made it harder to listen to. Mainly that the two of them laugh the whole time and you just keep waiting for them to say more. However, it’s pretty darn adorable, too.  While Kristen finds positive things to say about the performances, Rob is much more self-deprecating (as he’s always been in the past), feeling sorry for Edward at every turn.

They both hate on the Bella wig throughout the film, understandably. It’s funny. And, let’s face it, true.  But Rob spends most of his time being uncomfortable about how much kissing goes on in the film, and wondering why in the world Edward is OK with the Jacob and Bella relationship. While Kristen insists that Edward Cullen is just more mature than Rob is in real life, I have to agree with Rob. Why in the world would a guy be OK with his one true love hanging out with all these sexy topless men, kissing them, etc.  I LOVE what Rob has to say about it.  It’s probably a more typical human boyfriend response.

Deleted and Extended Scenes

There aren’t that many deleted and extended scenes on the disc. That’s my one complaint. I think they could have added a few more, but the ones on the disc cover a wide array of the characters, which is nice. I really will take any extra footage we can get.  I really enjoyed the one with Angela and Bella talking about Edward’s jealousy over Jacob.  Most of them have leaked on the internet, but watching them all on the DVD is worth your time. I still would have liked to see the deleted scene we’ve heard about from Rosalie’s flashback (in the wedding dress).  Also, we know they shot footage of Edward as one of the Volturi because we’ve seen a brief glimpse of it a while back, but no footage has ever been shown, including on this DVD.

Six-part Making-of Documentary

This was my favorite part of all the extras. It’s pretty long, so set aside a good amount of time to watch it.  But I feel like you get a good look at what goes on behind the scenes, including interviews with the cast, crew and filmmakers, as well as interesting tidbits on how things were done (especially effects). But my favorite thing was just to see the cast on set, between takes, laughing or messing up lines, or catching grapes in their mouths (Taylor…). It just seems like a fun set to be working on. The cast clearly gets along and enjoys filming. It was great to see the fight training and the to watch it play out with stuntmen (especially for the final battle scene with the Cullens and wolves vs. the newborns. In addition, while you don’t get to see deleted scenes, you do get to see BTS footage when certain scenes that give you an idea of what else was filmed, even if we never see it.

And my favorite quote from the documentary comes to us from Bryce Dallas Howard just after she completed filming the scene where Edward bites Victoria’s head off.

Sad day for Victoria. Wonderful moment for Bryce Dallas Howard. Robert Pattinson’s lips on my neck. Anyway, I’m married, so… *giggles*

I’ve never used this before because I didn’t have it on the version of New Moon that I bought. And I was thinking, why would I use this when I want to watch the whole movie? But the truth is, sometimes you just need a dose of Edward or Jacob (or a slew of other people/groups if you bought the BluRay) and it’s kind of AWESOME. It’s like when I turn on Twilight while I clean my house, and I have certain moments where I run back into the room to make sure I don’t miss them (first kiss in the bedroom, anyone?).  While possibly unnecessary, a fun feature!

Next on my list to watch: Stephenie Meyer and Wyck Godfrey Film Commentary

On December 4^th, and just in time for the holiday season, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be released on DVD, Blu-Ray and combo pack. Much to the satisfaction of all the loyally dedicated fans, the two-disc special edition of the third installment in the wildly popular, $2 billion franchise features a six-part behind the scenes documentary, along with deleted and extended scenes, a photo gallery, music videos, and audio commentary from Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart and Stephenie Meyer & Wyck Godfrey.

Earlier today, Collider had the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with director David Slade, in which he talked about all of the special features and extras that even the most hardcore fans are sure to enjoy, how every aspect of making the film was daunting, that one of his favorite scenes was the kitchen scene between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Charlie (Billy Burke), and how he doesn’t judge a film by it’s financial or critical success, but rather how closely it achieves his original vision. He also said that he’s currently narrowing down what he’s going to be working on next, and that all of his choices are very different from his previous work.  Question: What will fans get most excited about, in regard to the special features and extras that you’ve selected for this DVD?

DAVID SLADE: You know, I don’t know. That’s bad. I made the film and haven’t even seen these things, except to approve them. What I will say is that I think it’s a point worth making that, for a film like this, because of the fan base, I liken it to a subculture. It’s not quite punk rock, but it’s a fan culture, like Star Wars fans. It’s a positive thing and I’ve always been very, very supportive of fan cultures. I’m a fan of all kinds of things. With a DVD, you want something you can own, you can watch, you can come to grips with and you can explore. It’s something larger than the film, when it’s going out to a fan base like this. So, I guess that’s my answer. I hope that they like all of it.

 The thing that I remember doing myself is the commentary on the deleted scenes. I don’t do commentaries on films because A) I’m not very good at it and B) it’s an odd thing that I discovered, on my first film, that you go through this really intense experience of making a film and then you sit in a little room with a monitor and you reduce the thing to a bunch of silly anecdotes. It’s really unfulfilling and I’ve never really enjoyed listening to them anyway, so I just don’t do them. I’ve made a point, since then, of not doing them.

 But, one of the things I thought was important, particularly because of this fan base and because of how much stock they put into the stories, was just to talk about the stuff we took out – that we shot and we didn’t put in – and the reasoning behind it. I felt it needed a bit of justification. There were some scenes that I actually really liked and would like to have put them in. And who knows? They may be favorites of people within the fan cultures. Film becomes a living organism. After awhile, it begins to tell you what it needs and you’re usually best listening.

In an exclusive interview with director David Slade, NextMovie.com got some great information about the Edward/Bella Wedding.

Any Twi-Hard knows that Bella Swan’s extravagant wedding to her handsome vampire suitor occurs in the beginning of series closer Breaking Dawn— chapter three, to be exact.

But according to David Slade, the director of the  adaptation, it might have come a little earlier on the big screen.

“We discussed a lot of the things at the script-writing stage — at one point, we were even going to shoot the wedding at the end of ["Eclipse"] but we knew there was another film coming,” Slade tells NextMovie exclusively.

“We knew that a lot of that could go into the next film.  And we just made the most concise version of this story that we could.”

I’m kinda glad they didn’t, not a fan of Kristen’s hair in that one, and we all know Bella needs to look perfect for her wedding.

Chief among the scenes cut from the theatrical version of the film was an exchange between Stewart’s Bella and her on-screen dad Charlie, played by Billy Burke.

“This is the only thing I’ve ever done that’s had such a fan subculture, so with the deleted scenes I wanted to do a little justification for them,” Slade said.

Finished staring at the famous faces of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, that is. Slade, whose pedigree is in music videos and darker indies such as “Hard Candy,” said he did his best with the “Eclipse” DVD to please the vampire saga’s legions of fans.

“Finishing the film is a moment of great weight. It’s not just getting it cut, it’s when the final print is timed and there’s nothing more to do,” he said. “It was the night before we did our press junket we finished it.”

The Ministry caught up with director David Slade, who steered the third installment of the franchise, as he reflected on his whirlwind year in the Twi-universe. After all, a year ago at this time, Slade was only a month into editing the flick.

“It’s all in Billy’s face, when you watch the film 30-odd times or more, there’s more in his face than in his words,” Slade said. “I was so confident that was going to make it in, we did it in one shot. It was two people trying to be as close to each other as possible.”

[Spoiler alert!] The two have a bonding moment after her high school graduation, one of Bella’s last mortal activities before Pattinson’s Edward follows through on making her a vampire.

Many of you have seen my posts about my love for The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. It is up there with Twilight and Harry Potter in my favorites list.  It was announced today that David Slade is one of three directors that are being looked at to helm the film adaptation of the first book of the trilogy.  I’ll see it no matter what, but I love to support our Twi directors!

The next big film directing job in Hollywood will be decided late next week,. That’s when Lionsgate chooses a filmmaker for The Hunger Games, the first installment of a trilogy based on the Suzanne Collins novel series that many feel could be the next Twilight. I’m told that Lionsgate has gotten Billy Ray’s rewrite, and will meet with three elite directors next week before making a decision. Gary Ross, Sam Mendes and David Slade  have emerged as the favorites. The script has become one of those closely guarded documents which do not leave the production company’s headquarters. I’ve also heard Andrew Adamson’s name in the mix, but it appears to be down to the three I mentioned.

And now it appears that the choice of director has been narrowed down to two possibilities, with Twilight: Eclipse’s David Slade and Red’s Robert Schwentke the leading contenders, according to the Vulture blog.Slade, of course, can parlay his recent experience directing hairy creatures that fight and his past work on the likes of 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy. While thanks to Red’s healthy buzz, Schwentke has become something of the Ryan Reynolds of the megaphone world, lining up possible projects one after the other.

According to Vulture’s sources, Slade has the upper hand right now, but Jackman is even now putting them through their paces, Dragon’s Den-style to see who gets the job. Okay, so he’s probably just talking to them, but we like to think of it that way.

David Slade sent this lovely note to the official Twilight Saga Facebook page to thank all of YOU for your commitment and love shown to Eclipse!

When you put your heart and soul into something as intense as the duration of a film production, you become completely lost in it. You focus on doing your very best to get it right each day and you work on this for so long that you assume an ownership of it.

When shooting The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, I always felt an awareness of how many people this film would reach and as a result, knew that this film did not just belong to myself, the producers and the studio, but more so, to all of you, the fans of The Twilight Saga.

At the end of the day, after all the hard work is done, all that’s left is the film itself, and your overwhelmingly positive and supportive responses have made me feel like we must have done something right. As a filmmaker, this is a rare and strange feeling of connection with an audience of which I will never forget and I thank you all for it.

No, David, thank you!

The Australian actor told DigitalSpy that he would ‘kill’ to be a aprt of the franchise for a while longer.

He said: “I don’t know, I can only hope.

“I would kill to be a part of these stories for longer, you never know!”

However, during the Eclipse press converence, David Slade told us that the novella may be too violent to reach the big screen.

“It’s really violent” he said.

“I remember talking to Stephenie about it and saying I thought it would make a decent movie but it would have to be R-rated because there’s so much description of violence. She only watches PG-13 movies, she won’t R-rated movie, she refuses.”

Last November, “New Moon” director Chris Weitz told us that the DVD release of the second film in the “Twilight” franchise would deliver 20 minutes of deleted footage for hungry fans. But when the disc dropped in March, no such scenes were included on virtually any available version.

Weitz eventually copped to the mistake, but “Twilight” fans might remain wary about promises of deleted scenes for the DVD of “Eclipse.” So approach director David Slade’s statements with both the usual enthusiasm and abundant caution, because he’s promised MTV News that the DVD will definitely contain deleted scenes — and at least two will feature Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan.

Summit has announced that several different chat sessions will be available on iTunes. There are 8 different chats in all and the first is already available for download. Go here to watch to the bad vampires, Bryce Dallas Howard, Xavier Samuel, and Dakota Fanning, chat with director David Slade and producer Wyck Godfrey. And keep an eye for other chats to be released featuring other members of the cast.

I recommend giving these a watch. They give a lot of insight into filming and it’s a casual comfortable setting that you don’t really get from usual interviews.
