Christopher Heyerdahl, who plays Marcus (of the Volturi) in The Twilight Saga, has booked a recurring character gig on another vampire cult favorite True Blood! He’ll play an “ancient and powerful vampire.” I wonder if he’s getting typecast! From Deadline:

Christopher Heyerdahl, who plays an ancient vampire in the Twilight Saga movies, will now play one in another screen adaptation of a popular book series, this time on TV. Heyerdahl is joining HBO’s hit vampire drama True Blood in a recurring role. He will portray Dieter Braun, an ancient, powerful vampire who plays a large part in the intelligence of the Authority and especially enjoys enhanced interrogation. That is familiar territory for Sanctuary alum Heyerdahl who played the ancient Volturi vampire Marcus in 3 of the Twilight movies: New Moon, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and the upcoming Part 2. Additionally, he played a demon in an arc on the CW’s Supernatural. Heyerdahl, repped by Open Entertainment’s Lesa Kirk, currently co-stars on the AMC drama series Hell On Wheels, playing Norwegian badass The Swede. The period Western was recently renewed for a second season.

Here’s an excerpt from Collider’s  interview :

Do you have as much fun playing a member of the Volturi in the Twilight films, as it seems like you do?

HEYERDAHL: Yeah, we do. I suppose it will be on the DVD, but there was a scene that was cut from Breaking Dawn – Pt. 1. We originally book-ended the movie. At the beginning of the film, everyone received their invitation. It was a series of vignettes of the invitations to the wedding because the Volturi, of course, must be invited. Our reaction to the receiving of this lovely little invitation was very camp and great fun. I’ll look forward to seeing that on the DVD. But, they’re a good bunch.

How was Bill Condon to work with, as a director?

HEYERDAHL: We talked a lot about being a little more camp, and how every vampire story needs a bit of camp. So, we very happily played it camp.

What can audiences look forward to with Breaking Dawn – Pt. 2, in regard to your character and the Volturi?

HEYERDAHL: That’s always a difficult question to answer because I don’t want to put out any spoilers, but everyone’s read the book, so I think it’s relatively safe. There are some things that have come into the story, that are alluded to in the book, but aren’t necessarily expressed in word. They’re expressed in idea, in the book. Some of those things will be brought to fruition, visually, which was a lot of fun. It’s always fun to see a thought or an idea come to fruition. It’s almost like going into the mind of a character. You get to go along there, which is a wonderful thing for film. On stage, you can never really go into the mind of a character. You just follow along with a scene. Whereas with film, you can actually dive right inside. So, some of those events have been brought to life.

You definitely see a lot more of us. For the lovers of the Volturi, that’s going to be a positive thing. We certainly come in with our large wooden spoons and stir it up. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed by where the Volturi goes, and the aftermath. We really are a fun group of evil-doers. The interesting thing is that you’ve got this wonderful, complicated triumvirate of so-called brothers, who each have a different agenda, and you get to watch them try to ignite or ignore or tease or play with each other. You can only imagine that, when you’re hanging out for thousands of years, you’re going to get to know your partners quite well. A lot of times, each one of them tries to poke their fingers into their neighbor’s hornet’s nest to watch what happens. A little bit of that goes on, and there’s a lot of subtle pleasures that come out. You just get to see those relationships brought out a little bit more, in the second half. It’s good fun.

Christopher Heyerdahl is almost unrecognizable when he is decked out as Marcus, one of the ancient Volturi. He even tells HitFix that he never gets recognized for that role. In addition, he has high praise for director Bill Condon.

HitFix: One of my colleagues just saw the new film the other day and had many positive things to say about it.

Christopher Heyerdahl: Oh? Right one! Well, [Bill] Condon, he’s a great filmmaker and a great writer and he has a wonderful understanding of story, so that doesn’t surprise me. I think that each one has done its best, each director had done their best to raise the bar and I think that as we get closer to the culmination of the stories, they’ve also go more money to put into it and the production values are getting higher and higher and the playgrounds are getting bigger and there are better toys. I haven’t seen it yet. I won’t see it until the 14th when we go down for the premiere. I’m looking forward to it.

HitFix: You praised Bill Condon. Did his participation feel different from your end of things? I know his resume, but did the production on your scenes feel different?

Christopher Heyerdahl: Each director you work with is going to bring something different to the table and I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about everyone I’ve worked with on that production. But Bill’s just a joy to be around. He’s got a great sense of fun and a great sense of work ethic and detail and a great sense of story. What he brings is a playground that I’m fully desirous to play in. I look forward to seeing him again and working with him again if I ever get the chance. He’s a hell of a lot of fun. We had good time. It became silly. One of the things that we’ve prided ourselves on is perhaps bringing a little bit more camp to the vamp.

HitFix: I definitely think people have felt that the Volturi scenes have had a different sensibility.

Christopher Heyerdahl: Well, we’re the old school. When you’ve been around for 10,000 years. Life is good. You’ve got to have a little bit of fun, otherwise life gets boring. A couple of grand down, you’ve gotta bring some ironic pleasure to life. Even old broken-hearted Marcus has gotta have a little bit of fun sometimes.

In a new interview, Christopher Heyerdahl, who plays Marcus of the Volturi in The Twilight Saga, talks in details about his characters in the show Sanctuary. He also briefly discusses Twilight and confirms he does not have a Twitter account.

Great. Any “Twilight” preview for fans?
Oh, gosh, let’s see. There’s a bunch of vampires and they’re all very pretty, except for one of them. He kind of looks like John Druitt [one of his characters in Sanctuary] with hair. And at the very end of it they get it on with these horrible werewolf characters. Yeah. That’s a spoiler. No one knows about that.

Big werewolf-vampire battle? Wow. Who would have thought it?
[Laughs.] Exactly. And there’s probably some hugging and kissing as well.

Will you ever get on Twitter?
You know, never say never, but it has yet to happen.

In June, when several fan sites got the opportunity to talk with Stephenie Meyer, they chatted with the Twilight author about the casting choices for the ancient Volturi, first seen in New Moon. Here is what she had to say about Michael Sheen, Jamie Campbell Bower and Christopher Heyerdahl. From Twifans:

ARO…………….

SM: We kicked around a lot of names with that. And Michael Sheen was Chris’ choice (Chris Weitz, director). “Frost/Nixon,” he’s a great actor, but I couldn’t see him as Aro.

Alison: Oh, Lucian! (the character he played in the “Underworld” movies)

SM: Well, I hadn’t seen the “Underworld” thing, and I was like, “I don’t know,” I kinda had a different mental image. I had this actor, that actor that I wanted. And he talked me into it. First day I saw him on set, I went up to Chris and I said “thank you so much. You were right, I was wrong. I will listen to you forever, because you were SOO right on that one.”

Nikki (LTT): When he delivered that line, it’s just like, “oooooh!!”

SM: It was a delight to watch him go in there. Every little take he did something different. He did slightly different things. Always, of course, lines were perfect. Never a mistake, but he would give something different for the director to pull from. And he’s so great, he’s a really interesting guy. So much fun to talk to.

Bekah (LTT): My husband, who thinks I’m crazy, when Michael Sheen was in…

SM: That’s one of the reasons I love that movie…I love watching him, where every time he comes on, I’m like, “Say something!”

SM: I hate that Jamie Campbell Bower didn’t get as many lines. He is chilling. He actually tried out for Demetri. And he was too scary for Demetri. We were watching it. There was another guy that — Demetri is supposed to be — Charlie (Bewley) was sort-of the in-between. Demetri was supposed to be smoother and calm people down. But then of course, maybe people don’t want to ever have somebody as the peace maker. They want all the tension. So Charlie was scary, but not as scary (laughs) as Jamie. Jamie was CHILL-LING. And that his face took the makeup like nobody else. He has no pores! His skin was perfect! He got in the makeup, and every line he delivered had so much weight. It was like “more, more please.” Caius needs a story. The whole thing with him and Michael Sheen was great. Well, Marcus too.

MARCUS………………….

SM: Chris (Christopher Heyerdahl) is just……….creepy. Creepy. He just did this thing where it sounded like he had 500 years of dust on him. That part of the movie…I was sitting there talking to him, and I didn’t know it was him. He’s bald. I’m used to him with the hair. So I’m sitting there talking to this tall, bald guy, thinking that he was somebody else. And when I realized it was the actor, I’m thinking really quickly back through everything — did he know that I didn’t know who he is? And then I told him…”I didn’t recognize you without the wig and the red eyes and all that…”

Twilight Lexicon has a two-part interview with Twilight: New Moon’s blood-thirsty Volturi vampire Marcus. They caught up with him at the Creation Entertainment Official Twilight Convention, and this is what they have to say:

We had the chance to interview Chris Heyerdahl at the Creation Entertainment Official Twilight Convention in Miami. Chris was nursing a hoarse voice in a really chilly room as you can see from his down vest and cup of tea…

L: Had you read Twilight before you got the offer?

C: I’d read Twilight. I hadn’t read New Moon.

L: So what drew you to take this part? To take a part in this series?

C: Being asked! My niece is a big fan and still is a big fan. Actually we went – I took her and her sister and my mother to see New Moon on her birthday. My birthday gift to my eldest niece.

Elizabeth Reaser talked to Vanity Fair about her role as Esme in the Saga.

What did you do to prepare for Esme? How do you still work to develop her character?
When you have the material [of the books] there’s so much already on the page from Stephenie’s imagination. Most of it came from that; she’s got so much back-story. There’s so much on the Internet actually, which I found really interesting because they [the Twilight bloggers] write about your character, they write about all of our characters. I found it really fascinating—their take on it. Even on You Tube, they’ll have some kind of report on Esme or Carlisle and their relationship and it’s just been really interesting.

Volturi Chris Heyerdahl (Marcus)

Going off the action scenes we’ve seen from New Moon so far, it seems that the Volturi are far more smash-em-up than they seem in the book. Marcus has a rep as being the most apathetic of the Volturi, but in this movie adaptation, do things change so that even he is getting in on the stunts?
Well, I tell ya: I was always jumping up because I wanted to dive on Edward [Robert Pattinson] as well, and throw him around. But for some reason, Chris [Weitz, the director] just kept saying: ‘No, just stay in your seat, just stay in your seat, be more apathetic.’ It was very difficult, Marcus always wants to get in on the action. As soon as you wake the guy up — as soon as Edward and Bella walk in — he gets so excited seeing this beautiful young love, it reminds him of the old days with Didyme, his long-lost love, it’s pretty hard to keep that man down, now. He’s finally woken up after 2,000 years.

Marcus’ superpower is that he’s empathetic to relationships, right?
(Laugh) Yeah, his superpower is being empathetic. He has an amazing empathy and he’s able to see the connections between people. … He’s the one who’s able to see when allegiances are starting to wane, he’s the one who’s able to nip it in the bud. So we take care of problems before they become problems.

MM: Right, well on that note then; how do you think audiences are going to react to the New Moon film?
Charlie: I think it differs from Twilight for a few different reasons. But I think the main reason is this film you can take your whole family to watch and everyone is going to take something out of it. Whereas the first film was a bit of an emotional play between three characters, this one has a lot of action. Chris Weitz is an excellent CGI expert and is obviously very good at directing high-action movies like in the past. This one is, like I said, you can take anyone to this one, it’s got something for everyone. The stakes are up, which is different from the first one as well so it’s going to be an exciting film.

Cameron: Yeah, for this one another part of it that’s really good for people is the last one was really about those three main people, Bella, Edward and Jacob. And now you’re getting so much more. You’re getting the wolf pack introduced, us, the Volturi, introduced and there’s just a lot more elements to it to make it a deeper story.

A reader at New Moon Movie sent in this fan report:

I went to the ‘Twilight Tour’ in Brisbane, Australia. I had so much fun.

The day started off with a photo session with the guests. I got a photo with everyone but Christopher (although I wish I’d had one with him – he was hilarious).

Charlie was waiting with open arms for the hundreds of girls to have a photo with. He was being quite mischevious – hugging, dancing, fake biting, and fake kissing any girl that had a photo with him.

Chaske was very nice, also hugging every fan. Tinsel seemed very polite, and Cameron seemed a bit shy during the photo session, but quickly got used to all the enthusiastic, and screaming fans.

Then there was Q&A. This turned out to be more of a stand up (or in their case -sit down) comedy show. Christopher, Cameron and Charlie were absolutely hilarious.

Chaske and Tinsel seemed a bit more reserved, although they joked about how kissing each other was their favourite part of the film and Tinsel joked about how SEXY Chaske is, and asked him to take off his shirt (but he refused). She also accidentally let slip who BREAKING DAWN’S director is! (unfortunately I can’t say)John Henson who is a costumer – not for the Twilight Saga, but for the Twilight Saga: New Moon Parody – brought along some authentic costumes (e.g. Edwards Jacket) and some exact replicas from the real films that he has acquired. There were some items of clothing that you could try on – Edward’s jacket and the baseball hat seemed most popular.

All in all, the day was great fun and the guests were terrific.

It’s cute that Jamie was nervous about meeting Rob and the rest of the cast. And I don’t recall Caius hating werewolves so much in the books. Must go get the books out again…
