ScreenDaily reports that Catherine Hardwicke has signed on  to direct the gangster film Diamond, set in the 1960′s in London. This news comes pretty recently after the report that she’ll be filming the erotic Plush with Evan Rachael Wood

Catherine Hardwicke is teaming up with Evan Rachel Wood, who she directed in Thirteen (along with Nikki Reed), for the film Plush. The film sounds like it’s a pretty sexy tale, quite different from her latest films (Twilight, Red Riding Hood).

Having described that boxing film, “Knockout,” as a story that “goes back to more of my ‘Thirteen’ days,” it looks like Hardwicke has been trying to hark back to her earlier sensibilities — a notion which is now affirmed by the fact she’s circling an erotic thriller set in the L.A. music industry titled “Plush” that has also Evan Rachel Wood attached to star. The project was co-scripted by Hardwicke and Artie Nelson and would potentially reunite Wood with the helmer who earned her a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination at the age of 13.

No word yet on where this project lies on Hardwicke’s calendar, but in an interview at Sundance, she explained that she’ll be “doing another cool movie with Evan next, a really wild erotic thriller about a character really pushing the edge, pushing the envelope.” It’s a generic synopsis, but does “next” mean “Knockout” with the Rapaces (which was originally set to shoot last fall) has been pushed?

Michelle Trachtenberg reportedly was up for the role and it didn’t work out for timing reasons. Here is what Michelle said about almost working on the film. From The Fab Life:

“There was definitely interest here and there because there’s only so few pale girls in Hollywood,” Trachtenberg said.Explained Michelle, “I’ve known [director] Catherine Hardwicke since the movie Thirteen. I was actually supposed to star in that, but I was on Buffy at the time.” Jeez, how many movies do we have to mentally recast you in, girl? All of them? Actually, we’ll just go ahead and start now. Wow, we can really see her in Arachnophobia!

As for why Kristen Stewart ended up snagging the lead in the vampire epic, Michelle shrugged, “I guess schedules never worked out.”

 

And can we talk about how AMAZINGLY handsome Henry Cavill is? He plays Theseus in Immortals, but Twilight fans might know him as Stephenie Meyer’s original choice for Edward Cullen. By the time the movie got made, he was too old for the role.

The ladies (or should I say goddesses) of Immortals looked beautiful as well. Here are Freida Pinto and Isabel Lucas.

Joseph Morgan (who I love as Klaus in Vampire Diaries) was in attendance, and his on-screen siblings Daniel Gillies (Elijah) and Claire Holt (Rebekah) came out to show their support! Sorry, we didn’t get a very clear photo of Claire.

Other members of the Immortals cast at the premiere included Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, Mickey Rourke, Daniel Sharman, and director Tarsem Singh.

Hardwicke also will discuss her experience directing Twilight, the vampire blockbuster that grossed $69.6 million on opening weekend — the highest opening ever for a film by a female director.

“I’ll talk about how we prepped the treetop sequence and the seven different locations we used to film that — what was the first unit shot, what was the second unit shot, what did Rob [Pattinson] and Kristen [Stewart] do, where we put the platform.”

Hardwicke, who began her career in Hollywood as a production designer, said she developed her techniques through trial and error, a year of schooling at the University of California, Los Angeles, and watching and working with a number of “awesome directors” including Cameron Crowe, David Russell and Lisa Cholodenko.

“Being a production designer, I was a department head right in there with them, next to them, coming up with ideas, pitching, running through rehearsals with them,” she said.

“I saw a variety of directors’ techniques and then on each movie I used what seemed to work best for that film.”

Catherine Hardwicke has her next film lined up. She’ll be directing a biopic based on Swedish boxer “Bosse” Högberg. It looks like Twilight fans should expect this to be very different from the vampire romance. From The Playlist:

ScreenDaily (via ThompsonOnHollywood) reports that Hardwicke will go behind camera for the currently untitled biopic of the colorful Swedish boxer Bo “Bosse” Högberg. Noomi Rapaceboarded the film last fall and it sounds promising. Högberg’s life is something of “Raging Bull”-esque legend. Coming from working-class roots, the pugilist was the subject of a book by Swedish author Lars Hesslind called, “Kontringen” (“Counter Attack”). Evidently the boxer won the light-middleweight title in 1966 at the age of 28 only to lose it three weeks later to Frenchman Yolande Leveque when he actually fought the match with a broken jaw. His story is full of romance, bouts with alcoholism and legal troubles that changed—somewhat—when he married singer Anita Lindblom. Noomi will play Anita and interestingly, her ex-husband Ola will take on the part of Bo—he’s been training for four years for the part so dude is gonna be ripped.

“It’s a very fun, very crazy story that goes back to more of my ‘Thirteen’ days. It’s more indie, raw and gritty, and it’s a true story,” Hardwicke also said earlier in the month and it sure sounds like it.

“I have another project that looks like it’s going to go first,” Hardwicke told Collider. “It’s in Sweden and Germany, and it’s really wild. I can’t quite talk about it, but we’ll probably do the announcement in a couple of weeks. It’s a very fun, very crazy story that goes back to more of my ‘Thirteen’ days. It’s more indie, raw and gritty, and it’s a true story.”

Given her track record of fallen projects, Hardwicke herself is well aware of the fragility of project development, noting that “as a director, you’ve got to have quite a few projects going because you never know which one will actually come together with the financing and get the green light… even after I had just done ‘Twilight,’ which made $400 million at the worldwide box office, I could not get financing for three or four projects that I really loved.”

One project currently undergoing that whole process is the adaptation of Martha O’Connor‘s “Bitch Posse” which centers “on three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, high school seniors who come from troubled homes and form a dangerous alliance called the Bitch Posse. “The writer and myself and Virginia Madsen have been working on that for the last few days,” Hardwicke added. “The writer came out from New York. It’s very interesting. The writer has to sit down now and really roll up her sleeves and do the hard work of putting pen to paper, so I’m not sure how long that will take.”

Twilight director Catherine Harwicke was recognized at the June 10 Step Up Women’s Network Inspiration Awards, and she announced an incredible opportunity for fans to own a VERY intimate part of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart‘s life!

Catherine said she still has the bed Rob and K-Stew first kissed on when they were rehearsing scenes at her house for the iconic first film in the series. And Catherine said she might put the bed up for auction to help Step Up Women’s Network if there was enough demand from fans — and we’re sure it would generate plenty of interest amongst the Twihards!

Also, the charity is a great cause, offering children in high-crime areas the chance to graduate high school and go off to college!

Director Catherine Hardwicke has made some of the coolest movies around, from Twilight to Red Riding Hood. To get excited for the DVD release of Red Riding Hood on June 14 (side note: take a look at the brand new site, where you can pre-order the DVD and figure out which of Valerie’s hot-guy options are right for you!) CG! sat down with her to talk inspiration, fantasy movies, and of course, Edward Cullen!

CG: There’s a much darker, alternate ending to Red Riding Hood on the DVD. As a director, did you get attached to one particular ending?

CH: I like both endings! They’re very different. If I had it my way, I would have had one ending in one theater and one in another.

CG: What draws you to these dark, fantasy movies, like Twilight and Red Riding Hood?

CH: When I read the Twilight book, I didn’t see it as fantasy. I saw it as a love story. I really wanted to create that feeling of being madly in love with someone. With Red Riding Hood, there was whole different feel. Although there is that sense of falling in love, it’s different than Bella and Edward’s relationship. Valerie gets suspicions of the person she loves, which is a very real theme. Sometimes you’re looking at someone you love your whole love and think, “Could they have a secret?” Maybe you don’t think your boyfriend is a murder, but you’re wondering if he’s cheating behind your back!

CG: You were originally interested in casting Shiloh Fernandez as the role of Edward in Twilight. What made you go back to him for Red Riding Hood?

CH: I liked him when he did the auditions for Twilight, but Rob and Kristen had more chemistry, which is something you just can’t fake. I’ve always believed my leading lady should have a say in who plays opposite her. I wanted Amanda [Seyfried] to be very involved with the person she was supposed to be in love with on screen. We had a bunch of guys come in to read with Amanda, but her and Shiloh just hit it off best!

Catherine Hardwicke may not have directed the previous two Twilight films (or the final upcoming ones, either), but I think it is still her baby. And she couldn’t be more proud at all the nominations it’s gotten for this year’s MTV Movie Awards!

“Well, I think it’s great. I love it that people are so passionate about it and that people are really into it and following the characters,” she told MTV News when we chatted with her about the June 14 DVD release of “Red Riding Hood,” which she also directed. “I think it’s a great tribute, obviously, to what [author] Stephenie Meyer created. … Rob and Kristen and everybody’s been able to just keep it going and keep people loving it all this time, and, of course, all the directors, everybody. I think it’s awesome. It’s great.”

Hardwicke also weighs in on the Best Kiss debate: Bella and Edward? or Bella and Jacob?

Stewart is nominated in the Best Kiss category for locking lips with both Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson. So which kiss does the director think she should win for? “Maybe it can be a tie? That would be perfect! I think [that's] the safest solution to this problem,” she laughed.

Earlier this month, we asked whether “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” would rule the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. Well, that question will finally be answered on Sunday night when the show goes live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles with “SNL” star Jason Sudeikis serving as host.

The third “Twilight” flick is up for eight Golden Popcorn statues this year, and given the series’ past record, Twi-hards probably don’t have to worry too much about its chances.
The director of the first “Twilight” flick, Catherine Hardwicke, says she is not surprised that people are still as frenzied about the movies as they were back in 2008.

“Well, I think it’s great. I love it that people are so passionate about it and that people are really into it and following the characters,” she told MTV News when we chatted with her about the June 14 DVD release of “Red Riding Hood,” which she also directed. “I think it’s a great tribute, obviously, to what [author] Stephenie Meyer created. … Rob and Kristen and everybody’s been able to just keep it going and keep people loving it all this time, and, of course, all the directors, everybody. It’s no secret Catherine Hardwicke’s interested in teenage life. Just take a look at most of the movies she’s made – Twilight, Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown. And it’s not hard for her to explain why. “This is a time when a lot of crazy things happen,” she says. “Drinking, leaving home, having sex, crashing cars, and figuring out who you are as a person.” Her films, however, focus on some pretty specialized teen activities: whippits and amateur navel piercings in Thirteen; sexual tension with werewolves and vampires in Twilight; skateboarding empires in Lords of Dogtown. No trips to the mall or soccer practice here. Instead, hormone-driven sexuality and aggression play out in moody, detailed environments.

Hardwicke has a degree in architecture from the University of Texas. “I designed and built a bunch of houses in Texas before deciding that real architecture might be a bit of a creativity stifler. I applied to grad school in Film at UCLA and people said ‘You’re an architect, why don’t you design my movie?’” Her design influences range widely. “Before shooting Thirteen I watched Mean Streets and A Woman Under the Influence. So Scorsese and Cassavettes and also Baz Luhrmann are a big influence. For design, my favorite architect is Antonio Gaudi. I also love European hill towns and lots of third world architecture. Treehouses and surfboards are cool, too.”

While serving as the production designer on films like Vanilla Sky and Tombstone, she waited for the opportunity to direct. “It’s hard to get a movie made. I finally co-wrote a script that I could make for almost no money. I couldn’t be stopped.” That movie was Thirteen (co-written with fourteen-year-old star Nikki Reed); a film that shattered all preconceptions about the level of debauchery to which an eight-grader could sink.

A unifying feature of her diverse films is that they brim with intoxicating images. Just linger over the opening scene of Twilight (haters relax: Teams Jacob and Edward are nowhere to be seen), as the camera tracks a deer tearing through the lush Pacific coastal rainforest. Or the sun-soaked, washed-out world of Venice California in the much underrated Lords of Dogtown. When beginning a film project, Hardwicke says, “I get an original idea or read a draft of a script or a book and then start getting a rush of images for the scenes and characters. I start doing research– how could the sets look? How could the characters look?” The mass hysteria around Robert Pattinson who she cast rather controversially (75,000 fans initially signed a petition saying they wouldn’t see the movie if Pattinson was in it) proves her discerning eye. When asked what it was like to adapt a movie with such a rabid fan base, Hardwicke replied, “It got more ravenous as we were working on the project– at first it wasn’t so intimidating. In fact, when I asked for a bigger budget, the studio said. “For all we know there are just 400 girls in Utah going online talking about Twilight.”

For a woman with a 100-year-old California beach house, Hardwicke loves to be inside working. “I love creative collaborations with actors, artists, and musicians. I love crazy brainstorming jam sessions.” And while she admits that it’s still “pretty damn difficult” to make the films she wants to, she has a lot of projects in mind for the future. Next up, a gothic adaptation of the Little Red Riding Hood story starring Amanda Seyfried– “It’s twisted and sexy and scary” – sounds like a walk in the park for the connoisseur of dangerous drama and teen lust. Ms. Hood might not make it to Grandma’s but Ms. Hardwicke is sure to deliver the goods.

Hardwicke, who most recently helmed Red Riding Hood, has showed a flair for teen angst in the firstTwilight, Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown. Here, there is angst to spare. The book focuses on three friends, Cherry, Amy and Rennie, high school seniors who come from troubled homes and form a dangerous alliance called the Bitch Posse. Something occurs that rips apart the friendship and haunts them into adulthood. The book switches back and forth from those high school years to their adult lives where one is in a mental institution, the other is a promiscuous writer and the third suffers through a loveless marriage.

The American actress – who made her film debut in Mean Girls – is best known for her roles in Mamma Mia!, Dear John and Jennifer’s Body.

She can next be seen in dark fantasy film Red Riding Hood – which is produced by Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Catherine Hardwicke, who previously worked on Twilight.

The 25-year-old actress is tired of being asked if the gothic film will make her into a star like Kristen Stewart.

“She’s [Kristen Stewart] uncomfortable with it, but also, it’s like, she’s only noticed for that and she’s been working for so long. There’s hype but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t just a little bit annoyed at the Twilight comparisons,” she told Marie Claire magazine.

The stunning star says she doesn’t worry about being in Kristen’s position. She hopes the film will rival the Twilight saga’s success, but if it does, it would be for “different” reasons.

“She felt connected to him from the first moment. That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is,” Hardwicke tells Newsweek of the couple, who are now filmingBreaking Dawn in Vancouver.

Stewart met Pattinson in Hardwicke’s kitchen in Malibu, Calif. After they kissed for the first time in the audition (on the director’s bed!), Stewart helped Pattinson get the job.

She became the most commercially successful female director in Hollywood with Twilight, a film that radiates heat even though Edward and Bella never even get to second base. Now she’s heading to Grandmother’s house with Red Riding Hood, an adaptation of the fairy tale with a bodiced Amanda Seyfried. Julie Christie plays her bohemian grandmother.

Like the late John Hughes, who discovered the teenage actors who became the Brat Pack, Hardwicke has created many of this generation’s tween idols. Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen), Emile Hirsch (Lords of Dogtown), Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner (Twilight) all got their big breaks in a Hardwicke film. She dishes about them like an older sister; how Hirsch was too lazy to do sit-ups and drew abs on his stomach with mascara or why Pattinson had to pluck his eyebrows. “They were a bit bushy,” she says. “We needed to see some eyes!” Seyfried says Hardwicke, 55, is “a child herself. She’s so connected to that youthful essence. She still walks around with a backpack and sneakers.” But unlike Hughes’s films, her movies are very dark.

For Twilight, Hardwicke had trouble finding an actor otherworldly enough to play vampire Edward Cullen. Then she got a call about a guy in London. “I looked at a couple pictures and was like, ‘I’m not sure,’?” Hardwicke says. “He had been fired from his last job, he was unemployed, he was in debt.” Pattinson flew to Los Angeles on his own dime to read with Stewart. “I have footage of their first meeting at my dining-room table,” Hardwicke says. “Kristen was like, ‘It’s got to be Rob!’ She felt connected to him from the first moment. That electricity, or love at first sight, or whatever it is.” Hardwicke gave him the part, but he had to make a promise. “You’ve got to realize that Kristen is 17 years old,” she told him. “She’s underage. You’ve got to focus, dude, or you’re going to be arrested. I made him swear on a stack of Bibles.”

Shiloh Fernandez chatted with Mark Jacobs for W Magazine about the role of Edward Cullen, for which he auditioned. Even though he didn’t get the part, Catherine Hardwicke chose him for a role in Red Riding Hood.

JACOBS: How close were you to getting the role of Edward Cullen in Twilight?

FERNANDEZ: You’ll have to ask Catherine. It appears that I was closer than I maybe remember. I did have a screen test and signed contracts and all that. But the thing that came out of it, whether I was second runner-up or not, was that Catherine and I liked each other, and she was gracious enough to keep me in mind for other things. I really don’t know how close I was to getting the part in Twilight. Did I want the part? I did. But I don’t think I was right or ready for it. And I don’t think anybody knew that it was going to be what it’s turned out to be. When Riding Hood came along, I thought it was a much better fit.

JACOBS: Is it strange to consider Robert Pattinson’s life? How that madness could have been yours?

FERNANDEZ: I don’t think it ever could have been mine. I think it would have been really, really bad for me. He seems like a really neat guy who’s handled himself amazingly well. I’m very grateful at this point that I didn’t get it. I remember when my agent called to tell me I didn’t get it. And then the next day I had an audition for something else. [laughs] When it came out, I was doing a movie with Ashley Greene, who’s in Twilight, and we went to the movies and watched it. It is a funny experience but I can’t say that it was one of the movies I was heartbroken over not getting.

Amanda Seyfried has a message for critics who say her upcoming “Little Red Riding Hood” feels an awful lot like “Twilight”: It’s totally different!

That’s what the 25-year-old actress told Justin Timberlake during a phone interview…which she conducted naked.

Since the trailer for director Catherine Hardwicke’s “Red Riding Hood” debuted, the blogosphere has been buzzing with comparisons between the film and the first “Twilight,” which was also directed by Hardwicke.

Critics have pointed to similar storylines of a love triangle, supernatural occurrences and gruesome murders.

“We have so many elements that make it completely different,” Seyfried insisted, adding that “we’ve modernized the story.”
