For starters, in the Best Picture category, two Twilight castmate films were picked – The Help, which stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Victoria” in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), and Midnight In Paris, which stars Michael Sheen (“Aro” – Volturi). Midnight In Paris also received several other nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Director.

Gil Birmingham’s Rango (he voiced the character “Wounded Bird” for the film), meanwhile, was nominated for Best Animated Feature. That’s about as good as it can get with these animated pictures, so congrats to Gil and the whole Rango team.

Next up, actor Demian Bichir was nominated for Best Actor for his work in Summit Entertainment’s A Better Life – a film which was directed by The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz.

Ron Howard tweeted last night that his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard and her husband Seth Gabel have welcomed their new duaghter Beatrice Jean Howard-Gabel on the 19th!

Ginger hair isn’t the only thing that Twilight Eclipse star Bryce Dallas Howard shares with her dad. Ron Howard might be a director now but he started out as an actor, most famously as Richie Cunningham in Happy Days.

The 27th Film Independent’s Spirit Award nominees were announced today, and Summit Entertainment’s 50/50, starring Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard, received a nomination for Best Feature Film, as well as Best First Screenplay and Best Supporting Female (Anjelica Huston).

Also notable, there were a couple of nominations, including Best Cinematography, for Midnight in Paris, which stars Michael Sheen.

Bryce Dallas Howard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt hit the red carpet together at a screening of When You Find Me, held at the American Museum of Natural History on Tuesday (November 15) in New York City.

The 15-minute short is the story of two sisters who find their lives on a farm shattered when they suddenly lose their mother. The project was produced by Bryce’s dad, director Ron Howard, as part of Canon’s Long Live Imagination campaign.

Mums the word for the sex of Bryce Dallas Howards baby! What do you think the baby will be? Boy or girl?

“We do know — we didn’t know for a while. We just found out recently,” The Help star, 30, told ET Canada during the Restless premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. “At this point [we're telling] just family.”

Despite her “tough” start to the pregnancy, Howard admits that the tides haves changed and, based on her experience with her son, expects it to be smooth sailing to the end.

“It’s kind of euphoric. It’s the greatest, I love it,” she shares. ”The thing that every parent hopes for is that the baby’s healthy, I’m healthy. No matter how you feel, that’s the most important thing.”

And Howard is already planning for a sudden shift in her priorities once baby makes its big debut.

“Whether you intend to slow down, you slow down,” she notes. “My son will be 5 [in February] and that time is so crucial for him and as a family.”

You were instrumental in getting the “Restless” script to the screen, and as a hands-on producer. What’s it to be involved day-to-day in a production role?
Everything that I have to say, I need to say [with] a huge disclaimer beforehand, which is I don’t think it’s a normal experience to have your first film be a Gus Van Sant film. Not only is Gus such a masterful filmmaker, but from a production standpoint, he’s a very efficient filmmaker. We came in $300,000 under budget because of the way that Gus shoots, and so if I go from here and produce some kind of independent film, I’m not going to really apply the experience that I had with Gus to an experience with, say, a first-time filmmaker or another filmmaker because he’s a dream director for a producer, absolutely.

So the experience was profoundly educational for me, really stimulating and exciting and collaborative and fantastic, but all that being said, I feel very fortunate that I was working with Gus.

Was it awkward or stressful to work with a friend like screenwriter Jason Lew? Sometimes mixing business with friendship can be dicey, especially when it’s a creative project.
The first time that Jason and I had met was actually [when] we were doing a play together, and we did a series of plays together, so that was kind of the foundation of our friendship … The particular kinds of plays we did were very avant-garde and experimental and highly collaborative, so we were used to working with one another in that sort of way. And I think it helped feeling not only like an admirer of the person’s work that you’re working with but also to feel genuinely emotionally connected to them and to feel a real friendship. I think it makes things go faster and easier because there’s never any question about how the two people feel about one another. It really gets to just be about the work.

I didn’t even know Henry Hopper acted. How did you guys go about finding him and casting him? I understand he was painting in a bohemian commune. How was he on his radar for this movie?
Well, he wasn’t. Francine Maisler, the casting director who’s been Gus’s casting director for a while, and she works with Sony as well, had seen him in a couple of plays and really felt like he could be right. Henry at the time was painting in Berlin, and we weren’t quite sure if he was going to be coming in for the audition or not, and when he eventually did, I mean, Francine was absolutely right … The people that we had seen before him were great actors, really wonderful actors and really read it in the way that we had always envisioned … And then when Henry read, I remember I was watching the tapes and just leaning forward because he interpreted the character in a way that I had never seen the character previously. And everything came alive in a very, very specifically unique way, and that absolutely stood out.

Fending off a new trio of openers, Disney’s “The Help” stayed on top for its third Friday in a row with $3.634 million.

Down about 17% from last week, “Help” is on track to win again in its fourth frame. Labor Day weekend isn’t big for moviegoers, so the Mouse’s drama should only need its projected $14 million to $15 million to wind up on top.

The race for second has a lot of fresh faces fighting neck and neck. Relativity’s release “Shark Night 3D” and Weinstein Co.’s “Apollo 18″ both earned about $2.8 million last night, with Focus Features’ “The Debt” only slightly behind with $2.6 million.

Like Crazy, starring Charlie Bewley, and 50/50, starring Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard, will both screen at Aspen Film Festival. The fest takes place September 21-25, 2011, in Aspen, Colorado. Like Crazy is set to open the fest and 50/50 will be the closing film.

Bryce Dallas Howard explains to TheaterMania the inspiration she had for playing her character.

Many of the film’s other stars say they didn’t have to look far — geographically or philosophically — to find the inspiration for their characters. Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays racist socialite Hilly Holbrook, simply had to talk to her family. “My mom [actress Cheryl Howard] spent a lot of her childhood in Louisiana,” she notes. “She said to me, ‘Don’t play this character like she’s Cruella Deville. You have to find the real woman in this because this was real and people need to know.’”

The actress — whose father is Oscar-winner Ron Howard — also admits it was a challenge to play someone whose morality was so opposite of her own. “I had to believe in the things I was saying and believe that what I was doing was right, because those were the circumstances back then with these women,” she says. “They actually thought they were doing good — which is so scary.”

Bryce talks to Moviefone about playing the baddie.

The movie was pretty heavy at times. Was it ever tough for you to actually say the things that Hilly says?
Yeah, absolutely. There are scenes that I would never want to go back and do ever, ever again. But there were a lot more scenes that were so fun because Hilly’s getting what she deserves. Like the chocolate pie scene, the commode scene or even the scene at the end on the porch when Hilly shows up at Skeeter’s house and is attacking Skeeter [Emma Stone] and Skeeter’s mom, when [Allison Janney] comes out and tells her off. Those were incredibly fun.

Did you like playing the villain then?
I loved playing a character that I didn’t have to worry about being appealing or likable or attractive in any way, that gave me a real sense of freedom. It’s a character that’s so different from myself that I didn’t have to worry about making her different from me, whereas sometimes you play a normal person and you don’t want to be playing yourself so you come up with these things and they’re not necessarily organic to the movie

Bryce Dallas Howard explains to Next Movie how people always get her and The Help co-star Jessica Chastain confused with each other.

“Even now,” Howard continued, “I was at the hair salon three days ago and a woman came up and asked, “Are you Jessica?’ And I said, ‘No,’ but then I said, ‘Do you mean Jessica Chastain? Just tell me what you want to tell her and I can email her.’ We totally have been mistaken for each other so many times. And I really love that because I think she’s beautiful.”

Bryce talked with Collider about her other projects, including 50/50 which also stars Anna Kendrick.

Was 50/50 your first comedy?

HOWARD: Yeah, but I’m definitely not the funniest person in that movie. I play more of a dramatic role, and I’m not one of the central leads. That movie is really a bromance between Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. It’s based on a true story. It’s actually the story of the writer who wrote the screenplay. Will [Reiser] got cancer at 25 and was battling cancer, and his best friend, in real life, is Seth Rogen. The way in which they approached Will’s illness and his recovery was really through humor and through their friendship. One of the things they did, when Will was in recovery, was say, “Dude, we need to write this into a movie,” so they did.

In contrast, while Hilly is married and has a family, she still makes a point to punish her ex-boyfriend’s wife. As the president of the Jackson Mississippi, she uses her power to exclude Celia Foote from as many social events as possible, in an obvious attempt to ostracize her completely. While she claims it’s because Celia is “white trash,” it’s pretty obvious the real reason for her exclusion is that Celia dared to marry a man that Hilly once thought she was going to marry her.

While it will be a long long time before any book series rivals the enduring global popularity of Harry Potter, which jumped from books into films, it took a little less than one month for Kathryn Stockett’s novel The Help, about the lives of African American maids working for white employers in 1960s Mississippi, to make it onto the New York Times Best Sellers List.  Granted, it was in the ‘Also Selling’ section, at number 29, but the book had only been out for three weeks.

This week, it’s at number one.  What changed?  The release of a paperback edition of the novel has certainly helped—between the second and third week after the paperback came out, the novel jumped from 23rd place (where it had been lurking after being in the top ten for most of a year) back up to 5th.

But there ‘s another key factor at play, and anyone who’s walked around a city in the last week can’t miss it.  Advertising for the film version of The Help, due out next week, is in full swing (trailer below).  And we’re talking the full force of the Dreamworks and Disney machine.  There is no mistaking that The Help is on its way.
