American actor Billy Burke has carved out a compelling career for himself. From starring opposite Diane Lane in “Untraceable,” to playing the role of Gary Matheson in the second season of “24,” to co-starring with Nicolas Cage as a diabolical cult leader in “Drive Angry 3D,” the busy actor has racked up impressive credits that span both the television and film worlds. But it’s his recent recurring role in the box office mega-hit series “Twilight,” “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling vampire romance novels, that’s got him in a extremely bright spotlight all around the world. On November 19, the highly anticipated fourth installment of the Twilight series, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” will jolt theaters everywhere, with Burke reprising his role as Charlie Swan, the Chief of Police of Forks, Wash., and a divorced yet devoted dad to Bella Swan, actress Kristen Stewart’s wildly popular character.

As a newly heavy hitter for film production, Louisiana played host to part of both upcoming Twilight Saga sequels, “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” (set for release in 2012), which were filmed simultaneously in Baton Rouge. During his time here, Burke got the chance to know New Orleans on a deeper level and deems it one of his all-time favorite cities. New Orleans Living spoke with Burke by phone in Hollywood about things like film, his passion for music and his time in New Orleans, and can understand why the dry-witted native of Bellingham, Wash., has been perfectly cast in the varied and interesting roles he plays.

Hi Billy! “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” will be released this month, which was shot in Louisiana.

Hey Christine, yeah, we did. It wasn’t my first time I shot a movie there. We shot “Drive Angry” in Shreveport. And I’m sure it won’t be my last, because there is so much production going on down there and it’s such a welcoming place for films to shoot. We already shot the second part of “Breaking Dawn” in Baton Rouge and that’ll be out next year. Other parts were done in Vancouver.

Did you get to spend any quality time in New Orleans while working in Louisiana?

Yes, I had my wife and my 3-year-old daughter with me, and a friend of mine was working on another movie down in New Orleans, and we stayed with him and had one of the best weeks we’ve had in recent memory. It was a beautiful time of the year and we were in a nice house in a great part of town, and I got to see a side of New Orleans I never really got to see before. I’ve been to New Orleans several times, but mostly just in the Quarter, and never really saw all the other stuff that the city has. It’s really one of my favorite cities. My wife is from England and she says that a lot of New Orleans doesn’t even feel like you are in America. It feels like a much more rich, European-type city.

You must have enjoyed the food while you were here…

Oh man! I wish I could remember the name of this restaurant, it was so divine. I’m going to text someone and find out the name of that restaurant right now. It was just outside the Quarter, and oh, man! From appetizer to dessert, I had some stuff that I hadn’t ever had in my mouth before, it was so great. I’m going to get the name of it for you. …

Cool. So how did you become the chosen one to play Bella’s father in the “Twilight” movies?

(Laughs). Well, the story goes something like this: Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first movie, had seen a little quirky independent film called “Dill Scallion” that I did years ago, a fake documentary about the rise and fall of this country singer. I played this crazy country singer, and it had this underground following. She asked my agent to have me come in, and I actually had no clue what “Twilight” even was. I had no idea what the books were about, obviously, I had never heard of it. So I went in and I read the Charlie Swan role and the Carlisle Cullen role, Peter Facinelli’s role, the father of the vampires. And I was so drawn to Charlie’s role, I just wanted to concentrate on it. After we were done, Catherine said, ‘Go Google “Twilight.”’ So I went home and Googled it and saw that there was this vast, enormous world of fanship out there. Couple of days later, we got a call that Catherine was interested in me for the role. And we never looked back. She said, “You want to do this?” and I said, “Absolutely!” (Laughs). So it sort of came about in the normal way, but there was something magical about it from the get-go.

When did you realize “Twilight” would be a world-wide phenomenon?

During the first movie. I had never worked on a film where people would actually come from miles around to actually try to get a peek at what was going on. There were fans around the set constantly, which was a little unusual, so I began to realize that no matter what, this thing would probably have some legs, because it’s got a built in audience. Some of my fellow actors say they had no idea, but I kind of had a feeling that it would do something. I mean, you can’t ever imagine the kind of success this thing had. After the first movie came out, for the next movies, the set security was like nothing I had ever seen before; it was just insane. You never have to put up huge blockades of felt all around the perimeter of the set to prevent photographers and people from looking in. You go set to set and the actors are shrouded in umbrellas. It’s just nuts. But all the fans that I have ever encountered, in my personal experience, just have embraced it so warmly. They just want a picture and a hug, and I’m happy to give it to them, you know? I can’t speak for some of the other actors, but for me it’s just been nothing but love.

I see that you have a load of Twitter fans…

Yeah, that helped a lot with the sales of my record, actually. I was a bit reluctant to go on Twitter at first but someone convinced me it might be a good marketing tool, and so I did and a couple of weeks later I had all these followers. I had no idea where they came from. So I figured, “Well, now that I have all of these followers, what am I going to do with them? Oh, maybe I’ll put a record out,” you know. (Laughs).

Your solo CD, “Removed,” did really well on CD Baby, where it broke some records. Plus, it must have felt great to finally get your music out there.

Yes, we were No. 1 on CD Baby for a few weeks. After so many years of putting my music on the back burner, it was nice, very cathartic. And I have been, and will be for some time, working on my second record.

So has playing Charlie Swan, the very devoted father of Bella in “Twilight,” related in any way to you being a father in real life?

No, not in the least. (Laughs). Going back to instinct and imagination, we got pregnant during the filming of the first film, so I had no idea what it was like to be a father at that point. I was only guessing. The good thing about Charlie, the way I interpreted him, was that he would treat his daughter the way he would treat any human being, with kindness and respect, and that was sort of the jumping off point that I started with. One of the major descriptive lines about Charlie in the story is that he doesn’t hover. To me, that means he fathers her from a distance, but looks after her and wants to make sure she’s safe always, of course, but doesn’t get all up in her grill. And, you can take that and say, yeah, he’s completely oblivious to what’s going on in her life and that’s true. I struggle with that as well. (Laughs). As an actor it’s tough to sometimes forgive what’s going on in these stories, you know what I’m saying?

Yes. In the story, he’s oblivious that his daughter is involved with a vampire … what?!?

(Laughs). Yeah, not only that, but there’s all these deaths happening and events going on, and he’s oblivious to it all, and he’s the police chief of the town! (Laughs) So some would say he’s not the greatest cop in the world (Laughs). But I look at it like he’s there to facilitate the connection between the fantasy world and the reality and the gravity of what’s going on in this girl’s life.

So tell us something cool about Kristen Stewart that most people wouldn’t know about her.

Um, I’m not sure that there are things that people know about her. There’s a lot of conjecture and things people would love to believe because that’s what people do. That’s the weird, strange thing about this business. People look at people on a movie screen or in an interview and they develop ideas and opinions that probably most of the time are not anywhere near true. So I guess the first thing that comes to mind is that she’s probably way more misunderstood then people would imagine. And she’s such a genuine human being, and seems to be very true to herself. I really admire that about her.

Billy Burke took to his Twitter to poke fun at himself as Charlie Swan, shedding tears in the latest Breaking Dawn, Part 1, trailer. Billy doesn’t realize that the short look at him crying actually made this Twilight fan cry a bit, too.

Was that p**** Charlie Swan CRYING in the BD trailer?! Spoiler Alert: We altered the story a bit. He’s weeping ’cause he’s missing Edward.

Charlie has always been a man of few words, and he took to parenting Bella alone quite slowly throughout the Saga, but Billy Burke gave that character life on-screen. His facial expressions as he walks her down the aisle in the trailer are priceless and so very endearing. It makes me root for the moment in Part 2 when Jacob will defy Bella’s wishes and bring him back into her life. Getting way ahead of myself already. It’s a good thing.

I’ve always had trouble swallowing the concept of Bella and Jacob being any sort of lovers. Often, their friendship is so rife with external conflict that it’s hard to discern what they really have for one another at any given moment, let alone decades down the road. The little dance scene between them in the trailer was so honest and sweet, though, that I couldn’t help but be nostalgic and so sad right there with them. Bless, if this film isn’t hitting all the right marks.



• FEATHERS!

The very first thing we ever saw from Breaking Dawn was a teaser image for this – the sight of Bella lying next to strewn feathers. We all knew what it signified back then, and it set the mood for fans as we watched production from afar. Almost a year later, we finally get to see a wider shot of that instance. Her little smirk, as she drops one back onto the bed, is hilarious.

Billy Burke is returning to the TNT show Rizzoli and Isles to reprise his role as the FBI agent Gabriel Dean. From THR:

Jacqueline Bisset and Billy Burke are heading back to Boston.

Both Bisset’s Constance Isles — Maura’s (Sasha Alexander) adoptive mother – and Burke’s FBI agent Gabriel Dean will return for the Season 2 finale of TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The December finale will see Agent Dean show up unexpectedly to rekindle his relationship with Angie Harmon’s Detective Jane Rizzoli only to have a big case disrupt their time together.

Billy Burke has joined the cast of Freaky Deaky. He is replacing the previously attached Matt Dillon. From Next Movie:

Burke will be playing an LAPD bomb squad officer who stumbles upon two former hippie activists (Slater and Racano) plotting to use their bomb-making skills to trick an alcoholic movie mogul into handing over millions of dollars.

So with Father’s Day coming up this weekend, I’m paying tribute to the dads from the series.

But who is the best “Twilight” dad? (Besides all of them?) Allow me to lay out the facts.

Charlie Swan, Carlisle Cullen, Billy Black and (future screen daddy) Edward Cullen are the men under the microscope. While everyone has their own ideas on what makes the best father, I’ve done some in-depth research (thanks, Ask Jeeves!) and these are the qualities most will agree on:

They should be of high integrity, but never high on other things. They should be able to provide for their kids, meaning they need some cash money – Benjamins, if you will. And a father needs to be responsible, offer guidance, and spend quality time with children. These are proven techniques that keep daughters (and sons) off the stripper pole.

Twilightish: How does it feel to see the end of the Twilight Saga? Are you happy to move on?

Billy: It’s weird you know? Cause it’s kinda like being on a television show for the last three years. It was a steady gig for me you know? I can’t say that I’m heart broken about it but it was a good gig for me. I’m a little on the fence about how I feel. I think that it has run its course, and we as artists and audiences have gotten everything we can possibly get out of it. Always happy to be moving on.  I have no idea what is next for me.

Twilightish: Do you wish for more movies?

Billy: No, no I don’t wish for more Twilight movies. Anything beyond this would be pushing cartoon level.

Twilightish: When you look back on Twilight, would you do it all over again or pass?

Billy: Of Course! Absolutely! Actually, I enjoyed playing Charlie. I liked him!

Thriller author Michael Connelly has seen a couple of his characters embodied on-screen at this point—Clint Eastwood played Blood Work‘s Terry McCaleb, while  Matthew Mconaughey just took his turn as street-smart defense counsel Mickey Haller—but his most popular creation, Los Angeles homicide detective Hieronymous “Harry” Bosch, has remained solely in book form. Connelly introduced Bosch in 1992′s The Black Echo and has since written 15 more novels featuring him, sometimes alongside other characters like McCaleb and his half-brother Haller. With the release of The Lincoln Lawyer, EW asked Connelly whether there was anyone in Hollywood he could see taking on the role in a movie version, and the author suggested Billy Burke, who plays Bella’s sheriff father in the Twilight saga.

“Something about him…he’s got the mustache,” says Connelly. “Whenever I see him in movies, he’s very close to how I picture Harry Bosch.” Connelly admits that if they ever make a movie from one of his Bosch books, the producers would probably want to go for someone a little more A-list, but, hey, you never know. The author seems to have a particularly good nose for this kind of stuff: He totally called McConaughey’s casting. “Back when I was watchingTropic Thunder, where McConaughey plays an underhanded Hollywood agent, I said to my wife, ‘He could play Mickey Haller.’ That was the first time I thought about it, and then maybe a year later I got that message that it was McConaughey.”

Talk about your role in Red Riding Hood.

It’s a slightly, pun the metaphor, but off the path of the fairytale and I play Red Riding Hoods drunken, misguided father. It was one of the most beautiful sets I’ve ever been on. I kind of look like the drunken jolly green giant. [laughs]

Any update you can give me on Breaking Dawn?

I’m here in Vancouver right now filming. The stache is here in all its glory. After this film, I’m not sure the stache in this form will ever return to my face. This has been a great gig for me. I don’t think that there’s any relief at all, if there were more books and more movies, I’d probably keep coming back. It’s a fun role to play and I love the peeps involved. As far as being sad, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. I’m certainly not going to be glad, though.

Fans are dying to know if the scene between Charlie and Bella after the wedding be kept in the movie?

I do have a scene with Kristen directly after the wedding, before they take off for the honeymoon.

Billy Burke knows he might be the most clueless father in history. As Bella’s pop in the “Twilight” saga, he never really has noticed that his daughter is, oh, dating a vampire.

Hello! The luminous skin? The piercing gaze? The jumping on treetops?

“I know, I know,” says actor Billy Burke. “He doesn’t know. My character Charlie does have to resign himself to being oblivious.”

Especially now. In the two upcoming “Breaking Dawn” movies, Bella and Edward will make it all public. The “Twilight’ers” now are filming the last installment of the hit franchise. “He finds out and his entire world gets cranked upside down,” says Burke.

As for a vampire son-in-law, he opines, “The way Charlie explains it away is that he understands his daughter is her own person. She will do what she wants to do. She will go after what she loves. He respects that.”

It’s fun to see you go from playing a no-nonsense cop dad in The Twilight Saga to this off-the-wall cult leader in Drive Angry 3D. Were you looking for a departure from Charlie Swan?

I wouldn’t say that I was seeking it out, but I can say that when I read it I would have done anything that I could to work my way into the movie in any capacity. [Jonah King] was the character they approached me with, and it had been a long time since I had not only not played Charlie, but… in the first part of my career I did a lot of bad guys, and most of them were not very well-written. This guy was so well-written and so tasty and had so many places to go that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and see what we could create.

Bouncing around between such different projects — film, TV,franchises — have you managed to create a sense of family like you seem to have with the Twilight cast?

With the Twilight gig, I don’t know — it’s a strange thing, there’s nothing I can really liken it to. It’s comfortable. It’s nice to see familiar faces and go back and hang with whatever you want to call it — that family — again. It’s nice.

When MTV News caught up with “Breaking Dawn”supporting player Billy Burke recently, he reluctantly gave us the vaguest of answers when we asked about his favorite filming moment so far.

“We are having a lot of fun,” Burke said while doing press for his upcoming violent thriller “Drive Angry.” “We’re in the midst of that now.”

Burke, who plays the (mostly) blissfully ignorant father Charlie to Kristen Stewart’s Bella, said his character is up to the same old tricks in the final two “Twilight” films.

“I go back in about a week to continue my job in that movie,” he said. “Which is being oblivious to everything that’s going on with vampires and werewolves.”

Cage owns this movie, but his co-stars almost steal the show right out from under him. Fichtner revels in the role of The Accountant, slurping up scenery and spitting out fiery hilarity at every beat. Heard delivers a shockingly strong performance as Piper, immediately taking her place as one of modern cinema’s top female badasses. Burke, too, offers a surprising turn as the deathly delusional King: “Twilight” fans, this is not Charlie Swan.

Breaking Dawn | Drive Angry | Red Riding Hood | Billy Burke

Drive Angry 3Dis filled with a great sense of its own silliness with director Patrick Lussier crafting a demented, gory and knowing homage to b-movie horror shows. It’s brash, crass, loud and thoroughly enjoyable. In many ways the kind of 1970s-inspired low rent flick that might have fitted neatly into the Grindhouse label given its penchant for thrills and chills with a pulp fiction heart.

Nicolas Cage plays John Milton (bit of a tired literary reference there), a bad ass ex-con who has busted out of Hell to rescue his granddaughter (yeah, Cage is playing granddaddies now) from the clutches of Jonah King (Billy Burke), a self-styled religious guru who worships Satan with his demented and dedicated clan of psychos. Oh and Milton’s daughter, before King murdered her, bit off his Johnson. Nice.

The use of 3D and its application takes a leaf from Alexandre Aja’s imaginary book on ‘Presenting Movie Mayhem in Stereoscope’. Drive Angry uses it to provide chuckles and horror in equal measure. And boy, do things get bloody.

Of course the 3D leans more to the gimmicky side befitting its aesthetic and Lussier’s film would be equally enjoyable in the standard format. But since it delivers laughs and violence measure for measure it’s something the audience will no doubt embrace in whatever dimension it’s projected. Drive Angry has a cult classic vibe for sure, whether it becomes one remains to be seen. It tear-arses into cinemas from 25th February. Go and see it.
