Stephenie Meyer weighs in on the Volturi casting choices

In June, when several fan sites got the opportunity to talk with Stephenie Meyer, they chatted with the Twilight author about the casting choices for the ancient Volturi, first seen in New Moon. Here is what she had to say about Michael Sheen, Jamie Campbell Bower and Christopher Heyerdahl. From Twifans:

ARO…………….

SM: We kicked around a lot of names with that. And Michael Sheen was Chris’ choice (Chris Weitz, director). “Frost/Nixon,” he’s a great actor, but I couldn’t see him as Aro.

Alison: Oh, Lucian! (the character he played in the “Underworld” movies)

SM: Well, I hadn’t seen the “Underworld” thing, and I was like, “I don’t know,” I kinda had a different mental image. I had this actor, that actor that I wanted. And he talked me into it. First day I saw him on set, I went up to Chris and I said “thank you so much. You were right, I was wrong. I will listen to you forever, because you were SOO right on that one.”

Nikki (LTT): When he delivered that line, it’s just like, “oooooh!!”

SM: It was a delight to watch him go in there. Every little take he did something different. He did slightly different things. Always, of course, lines were perfect. Never a mistake, but he would give something different for the director to pull from. And he’s so great, he’s a really interesting guy. So much fun to talk to.

Bekah (LTT): My husband, who thinks I’m crazy, when Michael Sheen was in…

SM: That’s one of the reasons I love that movie…I love watching him, where every time he comes on, I’m like, “Say something!”

CAIUS…………………..

SM: I hate that Jamie Campbell Bower didn’t get as many lines. He is chilling. He actually tried out for Demetri. And he was too scary for Demetri. We were watching it. There was another guy that — Demetri is supposed to be — Charlie (Bewley) was sort-of the in-between. Demetri was supposed to be smoother and calm people down. But then of course, maybe people don’t want to ever have somebody as the peace maker. They want all the tension. So Charlie was scary, but not as scary (laughs) as Jamie. Jamie was CHILL-LING. And that his face took the makeup like nobody else. He has no pores! His skin was perfect! He got in the makeup, and every line he delivered had so much weight. It was like “more, more please.” Caius needs a story. The whole thing with him and Michael Sheen was great. Well, Marcus too.

MARCUS………………….

SM: Chris (Christopher Heyerdahl) is just……….creepy. Creepy. He just did this thing where it sounded like he had 500 years of dust on him. That part of the movie…I was sitting there talking to him, and I didn’t know it was him. He’s bald. I’m used to him with the hair. So I’m sitting there talking to this tall, bald guy, thinking that he was somebody else. And when I realized it was the actor, I’m thinking really quickly back through everything — did he know that I didn’t know who he is? And then I told him…”I didn’t recognize you without the wig and the red eyes and all that…”

The Volturi picks are perfect! They act so scary and idk they are just awesome.

PLEASE keep the Volturi the same...All of the actors were awesome...Twilight would NOT be the same without the same cast of charactors!!!!
  • Frae
Michael Sheen is perfect for Aro! He does the perfect portrayal - Aro is the opposite of his collegues, as he said it, he "loves a happy ending" but he is also obsessed with knowledge. And he definitely never sounds "utterly bored", unlike Marcus. The other two, I believe, were amazing choices as well. Although I didn't picture Cauis to be so young looking.

I hope all 3 of them come back for Breaking Dawn i think it would be nice to see "Aro" be the good guy for a change lol CAIUS put his evil to work
  • Lunadark15
Aro! me da miedo juraria ke Vine !!!♥
  • The actors and actresses that play the Volturi characters are fine where they are.The only concern is the new characters like the Denali covens,Nomads,Irish covens, and other covens.
  • katie
i like everyone thats in the movie twilight.
  • jasper
i think the Volturies are great dakota plays very good and then michael sheen he plays good i think he s good for Aro i want he to play aro not some one else.
  • twilightgurl101
they shouldn't be changed at all,, they are perfect for the volturi
  • Armywife282006
I hope they keep all 3 from new moon cause they were awesome...Same things with dakota and the guy that played her brother keep them all the same for the last movie!!!!
  • Jessie
The actors and actressess did a fantastic job and they were cast perfectly!!!
  • Ihrtthefallenxo
i think they cast the volturi awesomely..except for jane. its still hard for me to grasp the fact that dakota fanning is in the twilight saga :/ im not saying i dont like her...i just don't think she fits in with twilight :/
  • Julie
Why does no one like Dakota Fanning as Jane? She may not look exactly like she was described in the movie, but she made me shiver when she did her lines, and that way she had of moving and speaking was dead on. That girl can act, leave her alone!
  • YouAreMythicalAfterAll[Anne]
I really like Dakota!! Espcially because you're used to see her be the sweet little smart perfect girl..and now she is kinda badass...It suits her :)
  • Ellie Jeffrey
You should definately keep all of the Volturi members the same, Because they all fit the roles really well, i was surprised.
  • Paulacullen
I thought Caius looked a little too young, but apart from that, it was fabulous casting. Felix matched my mental picture perfectly (meathead ;D)
  • BeckeyT
Other than Dakota Fanning being cast as Jane none of the Volturi matched the mental picture I had of them. I'd love to see everyone of the Volturi recast except for Dakota Fanning as Jane.
  • Chelamadison
    volturi casting was wonderful!
  • Neha
volutri characters were simply amazing...they should not be changed at all....they had a kind of scary look which was so important for the characters to look real....
  • RP is hot
I love that part, when Aro is about to suck the life out of Bella and Alice says stop, he moves his head back a bit and takes a swallow like his mouth is dry .................he does that part really well, all of the volturi play there parts well.
  • Jessica salt
I think the cast for the Twilight Saga Movies were perfect. I think they did a really good casting them. I would never change them for any other actors.
  • Kenneth
    what about Jane?
  • Team Seth
the only thing i didn't like was that caius' wig looked too yellow, it didn't look white enough, it's supposed to be white as snow, not yellow snow LOL
  • Dark-jane
these were the perfect choices for the leaders, for the guard, i can't say that *cough*dakotafanningkilledjane*cough*
  • RosannaTufts
Of course I know screenplays have to be compressed, but Marcus and Caius had too little to do. Let's hope that they get equal time when the finale of Breaking Dawn hits theatres 2 years from now. They've really got to have some intense interpersonal tension in that scene.
