Melissa Rosenberg talks about Victoria & Harry Clearwater

You may have noticed a certain change from the book to the movie version of New Moon, where we not only see Harry Clearwater have his heart attack, but we see the cause of it. And screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg decided to let Victoria do the job of killing Harry.

“In the book, Harry Clearwater’s death, heart attack is mentioned as something that’s off screen, although it plays a crucial role in the structure of the books,” said Melissa. “Reading that it was Harry Clearwater’s heart attack it just gave me the idea of, why don’t we see this? Stephenie [Meyer] doesn’t specify what caused the heart attack, so I decided, well, you know, if could be caused by something startling him. It could be caused by fear.”

As Melissa said, in the novel there is no explanation for Harry’s death, just how it worked as a plot point. By adding that it was a sighting of Victoria while he and Charlie were “hunting” for the wolf pack that set off the heart attack doesn’t violate Stephenie’s story, and instead adds a new dimension to that moment.

“It was a way to keep Victoria alive, it was a way to keep Charlie and the hunt alive, the danger to Charlie alive,” said Melissa, “and that’s where we get a really great action sequence with Victoria that all blends together with important parts of the movie and bring parts of the book forward. I particularly like that.”

Did you guys like the change? I thought it made sense and added some drama/action!

Via New Moon Movie.

  • New Moon was pretty good, but honestly, Twilight was better! I walked out of the theatre Saturday night a little disappointed. I wanted intensity, like there was in Twilight, but New Moon fell a little short. Everyone bashes Twilight's director, but I have a new found respect for her. She captured Edward and Bella's intense relationship perfectly. The reason why I loved the book New Moon, was because we got to know Jacob and the intense feelings he felt for Bella, knowing he was not her first choice. They touched on this in the movie, but I wanted more. Also, Edward was practically in half the movie...not like the book. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, right? I know it is hard to pack everything into a 2ish hour long movie, but still.

I loved the change. I thought it flowed perfectly with the movie and how they wanted everything to fan out. I thought the movie was done perfect and that the scenes that were cut werent really missed that much.

Great job New Moon cast and crew!

I am SO glad she did the screenplay for these movies. She does SUCH a great job! [Love Dexter, too! haha]
