20 differences between ‘New Moon’ book & movie

Fearnet has a new article discussing 20 differences between the book and movie versions of New Moon.  Here are a couple of their points.

Carlisle’s Volturi painting comes to life.

Instead of waiting ‘til the end to meet the Volturi, we get an early peek at them when Carlisle’s painting comes to life as Edward explains their history to Bella. Thank goodness! It would be such a waste to have even less of Aro & Co. in New Moon than the brief sequence we already get.

Victoria attacks Harry Clearwater.

While tracking the Wolf Pack – and slyly covering their footprints – Harry Clearwater suffers a fatal heart attack in the woods. But in the film, we see that Harry’s heart attack comes from the shock of being attacked by Victoria, who is seen stalking Charlie’s hunting party from up in the trees. The change here allows plot points to converge, as the ensuing wolf pursuit of Victoria runs parallel to Bella’s fateful cliff-jump into the ocean. And again, it gives Rachelle Lefevre something to do.

I wish I could comment on everyone's responses. I think the changes were necessary. There was stuff in there that hinted at what we know from the books. Like Carlisle and Esme's present: Esme said "Since you've been looking a little pale." If you've read the book you understand it. Also, with the first movie, the crew said they combined Jessica and Lauren into the character of Jessica and that Ben and Eric were combined into Eric's character. Also, Alice does have the vision in 'New Moon' so I think it was important we saw it in the movie. And, they were wrong about the pics of Edward disappearing. It's not blatantly stated in the movie, but you can see that the pics of Edward that were on the wall in the beginning are gone during her depression.
I think the biggest thing this fandom needs to realize is that the movies are going to be different. Period. Not every little thing is going to be in there because it's simply not possible unfortunately. You just have to accept the differences.

Right on........................Movies can only allow for so much. If to much gets put on the screen then it gets al slow and drawn out.........You said it great Sydney.
  • jodie1988
I compleatly agree with u, people need to accept the fact that the book is not the movie script!! The changes that were made I felt improved the movie but if they were in the book they wouldn't have made sence..

    I agree with both of you that not all of the scenes can be used because there simply isn't enough time, however there were some parts that I really wanted to see;
    1. Bella and Alice talking on the plane about her being changed
    2. The family reunion at the airport and following apology from Rosalie, although I know they sort of included Rosalie's apology in the vote
I loved the film and have watched it twice at the moment, I'll definitely watch it again because it is one of my favourite movies, however I just felt like it was missing a couple of good scenes (^_^)

I loved what they did with the movie! It was pretty much perfect.

It was sooooo much better than Twilight!

Quills scene wasnt here lol that sucked and Jake busts bella in the third movie lol i love the part when alice tells bella shell be back after bella puts the dog out lol it was a great movie iv seen it twice in 1 week lol!!!

i absolutely loved the movie, all the changes were really good and made the movie better! i especially liked how they introduced Jacob early when he gave her the dreamcatcher, it established that he was going to be in the movie later rather than if they went along the book they would have to explain Bella's thought process behind seeing Jacob and it would seem random in the movie =S i was upset with the ending (not that i didn't like it) but i am Team Jacob and hearing her say she loved him but if he made her choose it would be Edward was sad to hear =(

I liked the changes many of the stuff that was in the movie that wasn't in the book like the whole harry clearwater heartattack could have happened that way we only ever know in the book what bella sees and hears and jacob tells her in the movie that harry clearwater had a heartattack not that he was attacked by victoria and then had a heartattack it could have happened like that and it makes you think. I personally liked the end of the movie and thought that her lines to Jacob were great I like Jacob as a friend to Bella but I never think they are meant to be lovers, I am Team Edward just because Bella and him are meant to be!
  • sonya0624
Well said!! I am team Edward because Edward as a character is the essence of Twilight Saga. Even though the books are written from Bella's perspective, when we see Edward through her eyes we too fall in love with the character. Indeed, it was always meant to be Bella & Edward.. Personally I was kinda annoyed with Jacob's character in Eclipse & a little disgusted with him in Breaking Dawn.
I really liked that the script writer used her own brains & not take every word from the book..New Moon is way better than Twilight at so many levels..it's more mature, everyone made an effort to act better & the CGIs were great.
  • i personally think that these were not bad changes they actually made the movie better!
  • mpsbrat13
The changes were much more subtle than those in Twilight, and they had to change a few things to make it work on the screen. In my opinion the changes make the movie make more sense and enable it to move along faster so they can get the whole book in within the allotted time frame.

I loved how when Bella saved Edward she told him that "she can let him go now", that was awesome! Atleast she held her own, and let him know that she would be ok!!
I liked that alot, I am Team Edward, but I love how Bella was stronger at that one point until he talked and they kissed, but nonetheless she held her own and wasnt all lovey dovey with him!
They also didnt put the bike scene in the end were Jacob brings them to Charlies to get Bella grounded! I was kindof hoping for that whole scene!
And Bella never says to jacob "dont make my choose", because it will be him!
That just killed the whole love triangle to me!!...
I love the scene in her room though where the camera spins around her, that is really thought out and great!
Great movie!! I hope Eclipse holds its own to!!! Cant wait!!!!

Carlisle’s Volturi painting comes to life.

    LOVED THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Trevor
Well, also in the book, whenever Jacob goes to Bella's house to talk to her, he jumps out of the window, instead of taking the staires like in the book.
  • meiwai
in the firsst book tho they were in carlisle's office but in the first movie they never were so that might be part of that. idk
  • In my view the movie was average; the best character hands down was Charlie who was adapted perfectly for the movie. Bella and Edward, like the books, are totally self centered and deserve each other; But only because nobody else in their right minds would have them.
Ive got nothing against the actors, just the characters. I will never read the books again
  • jenniferfowler
IF U DONT WANT THE BOOKS SEND THEM TO ME! I WANT TO READ THE BOOKS SO BAD!
  • ykcivykciv
    That made me giggle :)

The top one is UK and the bottom one is US
  • i def. loved the movie, it was amazing but they left out the part where Bella gets grounded after Jacob tells Charlie about the motorbikes

    I Love Taylor!!..<3 <3 <3
  • shawn83
I actually think that they combined a few characters because in the book the character Lauren didnt like Bella and Jessica was sort of following her lead after Bella's depressios started and the episode in Port Angeles, but I think the combined the two which kinda explains how Jess was such a b**** to Bella. Then in the books Angela had a crush on and eventually started dating (with a little help from Edward and Emmett) Ben Cheney. But in the movies she liked Eric and in New Moon she was dating him.
  • i know!!! i was shocked that there was no ben cheney.. so what they gonna do in eclipse with the graduation invites and ben comes in with the movie details!!!
I wanted to see who Angela was gonna go for
:( oh well my only disagreement ahha which is minorly small when u think about it
  • holygral
It was a good movie... wish they had added the grounding seen... ha ha that would have been awesome... I felt that the movie was going to fast actually... I felt it could have been longer. Also at the end... umm... I didn't feel a lot of love in the bedroom scene. It felt odd to me. But still love the movie... Jacob's hair was better, makeup was better... a lot was way better! Great job! But I love this movie because of the book... Also I feel the changes were great because New Moon was hard to read without Edward in it much. Actually I heard that from quite a few people...
  • sarasol18
loved thee movie! completely for edward.. jacob is hella sexy but edward is everything i'd want!!(:
  • team_jacob5
I thought New Moon was so much better than the first movie, Twilight, but some of the changes they made were (from book to movie) were for the better and some for the worst. I like how the characters looks were changed up and I think it had an all around better look to it. The only thing I didn't like was the vision. *SPOILER* When Aro sees the vision of Bella as a vamp, it kinda ruined it for me. I was looking forward to seeing her change in the future films (hopefully BD is made) and I think that's one of the main plot lines. Overall though, it was really good and I can't wait for Eclipse! :)

one more thing that i notice was that Jacob didnt jump from Bellas room he just open the door , get downstairs and leave
