20 differences between ‘New Moon’ book & movie

Fearnet has a new article discussing 20 differences between the book and movie versions of New Moon.  Here are a couple of their points.

Carlisle‘s Volturi painting comes to life.

Instead of waiting ‘til the end to meet the Volturi, we get an early peek at them when Carlisle’s painting comes to life as Edward explains their history to Bella. Thank goodness! It would be such a waste to have even less of Aro & Co. in New Moon than the brief sequence we already get.

Victoria attacks Harry Clearwater.

While tracking the Wolf Pack – and slyly covering their footprints – Harry Clearwater suffers a fatal heart attack in the woods. But in the film, we see that Harry’s heart attack comes from the shock of being attacked by Victoria, who is seen stalking Charlie’s hunting party from up in the trees. The change here allows plot points to converge, as the ensuing wolf pursuit of Victoria runs parallel to Bella’s fateful cliff-jump into the ocean. And again, it gives Rachelle Lefevre something to do.

WHY HASNT ANYONE MENTIONED THE FACT THAT BELLA WORKING IN MIKE'S SHOP WAS NEVVVVVVER MENTIONED?

I am a huge fan of the Twilight Saga. I have read the entire saga twice this year and am reading it again for the 3rd time. I have Twilight on dvd and have seen New Moon in the theaters. Twilight the movie did not do justice to the book. I understand the necessity to make cuts due to time allotments and such. I saw the movie Twilight before I ever read the book, which was good for me, or else the movie would have been a real dissappointment. I don't think that Twilight the movie caught the real essance and depth of the book. New Moon was closer to the story line, although it was easy for me to see the chronological order of things that were changed in the movie due to time allotment and still trying to tie the whole thing together. New Moon the book was extremely hard for me to get through. It felt like it just dragged on and on about Jacob and Bella, considering the "high feeling" that the end of "Twilight" left me with. I wanted to read more about Bella and Edward. I did feel that New Moon the movie also drug on in the same way, but I expected it to since the book did as well. All in all, they are AWESOME books and great movies!!! {This coming from a 34yr old women ; ) } I've heard a rummor that they are considering making Breaking Dawn into two movies. At first I was completely upset, how could they leave us agonizing over the ending like that just to make more money. Upon closer reflection of the idea, it makes more sense to me. If Breaking Dawn is done in 2 parts, the movie can more accurately depict the book; that and the fact that there is just so much going on in Breaking Dawn. I can handle the two part episode so long as it follows the book as accurately as possible, that will deffinitely be worth the wait!!!!

    GO TEAM EDWARD!!!!

a lot of important scene should be included such as..

    1. cd gift from edward was no where to be found and bella removed d stereo from her truck to relate with why she doesnt listen to music anymore...so the depress scene delivered more sadness to audience..more effect..

    2. bella's awake after get back from voltera should think she was dreaming at d beginning to relate how depressed she was, cant differentiate between reality and dream, to show how crazy she was without edward, and edward prove she is not dreaming..

the scene included not being done well enough...

    1. edward wrapped bella, hold her tight, his hand on her waist most of time on their way to meet volturi..edward tried to protect bella from d most dangerous situation...!!! not jaz hold bella's hand like walking by d beach...

  • I think they did real well, book to movie, yeah there was some added or missing parts but it made the movie good and flow well, I noticed all the 20 and more. They brought up Bella hitting Paul, not only that it was not in the book the sequence was flopped, in the book she talks to Jacob first on the beach, and he explains who is attacking, and didn't know why and then she said she knew why and explained so then he takes her back to the house so they can let the others know, and when she got there they were mad a t Jake for bringing her there, that is when Paul and Jake get into the fight. Loved the movie I have went twice, my family loves the movie, it is a good family movie. Can't wait to see the next two.

i loved the movie!! but the only thing i wanted more as how bella was always trying to hold herself together whenever she thought about 'him'.
but yeah apart from that it was great. :)
  • twiloverxx
Jasper was in school! Ah well I love him anyways. I thought the changes were good - the film wouldn't make sense to anyone who hasn't read the books. I loved it anyways!

did you guys ever think about that we never got to know what the present was when she cut herself. the one's that haven't read the book won't get that, unless if they explain it in eclipse. it was the tickets to her mom which i think is something important to know! :)
  • Sarah
Umm does anyone remember that when bella punches jacob in the face she breaks her hand?? How come she can suddenly punch paul in the face? That, and the reunion were my only disappointments. New Moon, was sooooooooo much better than Twilight, it related back to the story of the book so much better. I was actually really gutted with Twilight, it was just so wrong in every way.. but i mean il take what i can get. Haha. New Moon was amazing, i cried, i laughed, and i really enjoyed it. Thanks Weitz :)
  • I loved this movie a lot, it was so AWESOME. Incredible, amazing, so sweet and also full of romance and little sense of humor to make it so real.even it's not exactly same with the book. Which is not impossible. But all the new moon team has done a great job,it's so fantastic, I've been waiting 4 this movie and i'm not regret at all that i have 2 go home late cuz i only got ticket 4 midnight, finally i can see them again, the perfect edward and amazing bella and also jacob, as overall was so good, here in Indonesia everyone loved it. But there's onething that missed i supposed, and not go as my expectation, in this movie i was expecting when we read the book there's supposed a scene when bella awake at her bed she noticed that she was in edward's arm and bella was just in his hug. which apparently we just saw how edward made bella realize that edward was exactly next to her, to show that he exist.just the time after bella saved edward from the suiside. Well, but i do love the scene when bella was trying to rescue edward by crossing the pool, when they finally met and a touching ends of edward proposes. It's so sweet. I think. Can't wait to watch it again!
Hopefully not long 4 the eclipse.:-)

Edward actually did suggest marriage to Bella in New Moon. He didnt actually propose to her until Eclipse though.
  • lastcntrygirl
glad to see someone else was paying attention when they read the book ; )

    haha hell yeah :)

Most of the changes seemed completely justified and helped move the plot along, although I don't think she seemed like she was in as much pain post Edward in the film as she did in the book. Conversely, I really liked how there were a few more jokes and lighthearted lines included (though Bella's 'have you got beef with them' line smacked of 90s TV); it made them seem a bit more real and young.

I was disappointed with the CGI,especially where the pack are cliff diving, I know its possible to do better than that, and wonder why they didn't. Vampire Bella and Edward running scene was so cheesy it made most people laugh in the cinema, and could've lost so much of that cheese by simply removing Edward's bloody waistcoat!

Jessica was amazing,I've momentarily forgotten the actor's name but she's fantastic. Even in the first movie I thought she played the part wonderfully, and in this one she was even better. Just perfectly teenage and self centred and kinda whiney. The best supporting role by far in my opinion.

I wish I could comment on everyone's responses. I think the changes were necessary. There was stuff in there that hinted at what we know from the books. Like Carlisle and Esme's present: Esme said "Since you've been looking a little pale." If you've read the book you understand it. Also, with the first movie, the crew said they combined Jessica and Lauren into the character of Jessica and that Ben and Eric were combined into Eric's character. Also, Alice does have the vision in 'New Moon' so I think it was important we saw it in the movie. And, they were wrong about the pics of Edward disappearing. It's not blatantly stated in the movie, but you can see that the pics of Edward that were on the wall in the beginning are gone during her depression.
I think the biggest thing this fandom needs to realize is that the movies are going to be different. Period. Not every little thing is going to be in there because it's simply not possible unfortunately. You just have to accept the differences.

Right on........................Movies can only allow for so much. If to much gets put on the screen then it gets al slow and drawn out.........You said it great Sydney.
  • jodie1988
I compleatly agree with u, people need to accept the fact that the book is not the movie script!! The changes that were made I felt improved the movie but if they were in the book they wouldn't have made sence..
  • new moon 23103
    I agree with both of you that not all of the scenes can be used because there simply isn't enough time, however there were some parts that I really wanted to see;
    1. Bella and Alice talking on the plane about her being changed
    2. The family reunion at the airport and following apology from Rosalie, although I know they sort of included Rosalie's apology in the vote
I loved the film and have watched it twice at the moment, I'll definitely watch it again because it is one of my favourite movies, however I just felt like it was missing a couple of good scenes (^_^)

Another thing that no apearred in the movie is Edward' s present, when he give her the cd with Bella's song .. and then when he take away.. when he go away.. And the present of Carlise and Esme , the airplane tickets .. to Edward and Bella! it isnt enouth importante .. but i think that the cd is very important because there is the definitilly song, that Edward wrote to her!
  • tom_anto
the movie was as a whole musical! i luved it.............especially the direction! shud say that he did a great job! a lot of dramatized scenes too.............but they reeli tickle r eyes! tears did drop!
